Well, its VERY much like Freespace. I just remembered this game (Played demo)
-
I remember I found a major bug with the demo before I even started playing it. :p
It's also something like $4 at a local software store. X2 is, unfortunately, $30. :(
-
The game (or should I say Demo) is awesome.
oh, and :welcome: :)
-
I did have it but it did stop working
-
Eh....I don't know. Tachyon was kinda underwhelming. The economy and customization came across as kind of half assed. Really not too many choices to make. Combat wasn't spectacular, wasn't horrible either - just lacking in variety.
It had it's moments - the sisteen chapel mission comes to mind - but pretty much after I beat both pathways, I uninstalled it and haven't had any urges to try it again.
-
Tachyon was ok. I finished the game through; for the first and second time its a great play, especially when you see the differences in each path. But after that, it looses it's replay value....
-
I still have my original disk somewhere. When i´m short of games to replay, i still sometimes install it to have some fun. It´s an average game. But if you want a space combat game, try Starlancer. Much better. By today´s standards, Starlancer is still a very good game. Great graphics, awesome radio chatter, cool ships, and loads of fun.
-
I played Tachyon, but i never completed it :(
-
Yeah I got Tacyhon on budget a while back. Bruce Campbell does the voices, thats the games biggest plus. semi-newtonian physics was an interesting change but the story and universe is pretty forgettable in the end. Only bothered playing the rebel (good) story.
Way too many missions where you have to wait around for your shields to recharge before proceeding. combat could be pretty hard, which is a plus on freespace. The AI seemed pretty competent.
-
I remember it had gay capship battles. No beams, no torpedoes, just dull. And the nebulas looked weird too.
-
Tacyhon was Ok, IMO. Nice animated textures and cockpit, fairly detailed stations, interesting nebula effect, and a curious newtonian model.
On the other hand, a lot of the dogfighting was dull, I found the story a bit dull, and the voiceover got on my tits.
EDIT; I think I got it for £3 somewhere (new). Second cheapest game I've ever bought (next to Project Eden, which was 99p - I bought it as much out of sympathy as actively wanting it)
-
Actually, when I played the Freelancer demo, I thought "Freelancer" became open source, then I remembered it looked different and played differently. Then I found Freespace 2.
-
Congrads for finding FS2. Anyone have the demo hosted, so i can d\l it? The demo D\l on the site is dead.
-
FS2 or Tacyon demo?
-
Actually, if you get a Delta Force game, (IIRC it's Delta Force Landwarrior) you can get it there.
aldo, that was stupid. he HAS fs2.
Charismatic: Google it.

Might want the FS2 demo for some other reason; who am I to presume?
-
Aldo: the Tacyone.

I don't know how many - if any - of those mirrors still work, though.

ummm, yeah it did. Beams were only used against other capship/stations, so you didn't see them very often.
The whole game is kind of cheesy, though, I mean: REDSHIP RORY!!!!
-
Cheesy? The game CDs were made out of specially thickened and cooled fondue!

i dont see why people rave about tachyon's physics, they werent that much different than freespace physics, the only noticeable difference was the slide key. and a slide key do not newtonian phisics make. it is a gameplay feature and by no means makes the game any more realistic.
one thing i hated about that game is the lack of a free flight option. you couldnt fly unless you had a mission. there was plenty of space to explore, something freelancer did quite well, but the engine didnt let you fly unless you had a mission, and even if you stayed out awhile after your mission there really wasnt nothing to do. i had quite abit of fun shooting at the police fighters. but they seldom returned fire.
the eyecandy was nothing spectacular, the nebulas were nothing compaired to freespace's, the graphics looked kinda flat, kinda the cheapened stuff youd find in a console game.
im not even gonna touch the cheasyness of the plot. that was obvious and i need not waste time on that. i remember at the time of tachyon's release, it was frequently refered to as tachy-on-the-fringe.
-
there needs to be a game that combines the awesomeness of FS2 and IW2. i'd die happy, i guess
-
just give freespace a newtonian option and id be happy
-
Give me something with X-2's economy (except without silicon as the most expensive thing in the entire universe), I-War 2's flight model and piracy, Freelancer's readily available missions, Freespace's capships. Set it in the star wars universe. Oh, and let me missions on the ground or boarding ships and play it in FPS mode ala Deus Ex, with Raven shield's option of planning. Heck, let me board and take over ships if I want to. Maybe even toss in M002 empire management, or Homeworld strategic combat if I don't feel like actually flying and instead want to co-ordinate my fleet.
Then charge me $5000 for a copy, and I'll be happy even if I never can afford to play it, heh.

Heathen! Keep Newton's laws out of sci-fi! :p
phato, doesn't that sound a lot like the ambitions of a certain unmentionable game "developer"? :p

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like an awful game? :p

Just ask Derek Smart, and you can get a half baked version of it with shabby graphics, non-existent customer service and all the features you and other players might want changed to suit Dereks own _SUPERIOR_ _gamE_ DESIIGGN1111! abilities. Such as replacing all the capital ships with coke can dispenser machines (the bastards that they are).

You wouldn't be able to mod it though because mods are the tools of Satan used to oppress innocent game designers and steal the food from their mouths :D

wuss! :D
i perfer more sci and less fi with a dash of pretty artwork.
-
Hell, I'm no wuss. In fact, my physics professor basically said, "Forget real physics; I want to hear explosions in space!" :p
-
LOL Exactly ;) Real is outside the door, fun is on my computer ;)
I still have Tachyon installed, it's not a bad game, though Bruce could do with shutting up, it always reminds me of that scene from Spaceballs when they are summing up the story, you half expect him to turn round during his monologues and say 'Ok, everyone got that?'
That said, the games pretty good, combat is too long ranged for my tastes though :)
-
I wish i had the full game...
-
I bought it a few months ago... BTW has anyone ever ported the ships out of it to .cobs? (hint hint) If not tell me where I can get the utilities that reads that model file format.. l8tr..
