Title: Need help converting *.mve to *.avi
Post by: DCTH on March 15, 2005, 03:55:28 pm
Hello there!
First I want to say thank you for this great work an FreespaceSource!

I have a legal copy of Freespace 2.... But the vids just won't play! So i wanted to convert them into avi-format.
But everytime i try it, the screen turns black for a short time an then i have a  0(zero)k-avi file.....
I tested different downloads of the mve2avi-program! (seem to be the same prog, but different releases).

By the way: I use windowsXP with SP2..... here i get no error-message.
with win2000 the vids plays when i start the original game (but i just don't use win2000... it's installed for some recovery-reasons).
when i start to convert an mve-file, it gives me a "directdraw initzialisation failed".

Hope someone can help me!

ps.: sorry for my not so good english, but it rusted a little (i am german)

Here (http://oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/FS1movies/) are all of the Freespace 1 movies.

And here (http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/) are the Freespace 2 movies.

And...

yea... i know! But first i play the whole game in german... so it would be nice to have german vids!
second point is: That would be oder 100mb to download... not everyone has DSL... (or can at least get it) :-(

English:

Use the MVE2AVI converter.
Here (http://www.perceptron.fatal.ru/utils/mve2avi2.4h.rar)

The Videos will be big (Intro has 2 GB) so calculate more Hard Disk Space than before.

Then use VirtualDub (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=399#comments) tio convert them to XVID/DivX or whatever.. than you have smaller AVI Files than before.

Thats all.. you need only the same File Name as before so.

Intro.mve -> Intro.avi
Colossus.mve -> Colossus.avi

More Info how to convert a AVI 2 DivX (http://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm)

Mfg

Deepstar

I hope thats it's no problem than i write in both languages.

Are you 100% sure you are using the correct version?  There is a high color version of MVE to AVI which is neccessary for the freespace MVEs.

... i'm sure! I read the manuals more than once!

I've just tried it with the program kietotheworld mailed me!
A MVE-Extractor..... But this time i get following error-message:

Run-time error '339':
Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

Unfortuneatly this says nothing to me..... but its obviously not on my system!

Edit: Ok... now i've installed an registered this library-file and i can create a exe-file..... but this doesn't work! -> Black screen, then back to desktop!

Which movie are you trying to convert? Don't bother with intro unless you've got an NTFS formated drive to save it on. Intro.mve is over 4GB in size when you convert it.

If you're getting failures with something small like Bastion then it's time to try something else.

For a start use the version of MVE2AVI I use as that way I know that any problems are due to something being different between your system and mine. You can get it from here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/movies.html)

i've tried almost every movie..... and don't worry! I've enough space on my NTFS-formatted disk!
I just just the option -log to create a logfile.... but almost nothing in there sounds familiar!
For the logfile, see next post....

Quite frankly I'm mystified as to why it didn't work for you. If you can find the space for it somewhere you could try uploading the german version of Bastion and let me have a go at it.

Beyond that I've got no idea.

I'm sure it would work if the vids would at least play.....
I tried using the mveplayer from Interplay (which is hopefully legal) to watch them.... It doesn't work!

@karajorma
Thanks for the offer but it isn't necessary.....
Maybe i watch out for a system with win98 running on it an give it another try there!

And one last thing:
@ Carl
Have you used the searchengine of this board with 'mve avi'....?
Don't think anyone really bothers about this thread!
and btw: I buyed this game.... and i want to see those damn vids! No matter in which format... mve or avi....

greets
DC

A bit more clarification:  Converting MVE to AVI is not illegal, nor infringement.  However, to fully reveal the programming behind MVE IS infringement, and this has not been done with this utility.  MVE2EXE(?) was shut down because the executable movie was just that, a standalone that could recreate MVE compression if exploited a certain way, because much of the info was in the EXE header.

Hi, DCTH.

@DaBrain

now that Interplay has gone under, there should in theory be nothing stopping one from converting the mve's... I'm actually curious if a coder isn't interested to take one of the converters, look at how it works, and re impliment it...

No, they still maintain the MVE license.  It is of their own creation, unlike the FS2 videos.  They might not be able to do anything that is under contract or license, but that doesnt mean they cant defend their own works.

Ok... but as far as i understand haw these 'mve2avi'-progs work, it isn't illegal! They just capture every Frame from it. Its just analog! It doesn't encode anything! For example you can also save the 'movie' in bmp-format and a seperate audio-file!
It's like when i have a Audio-CD with an kind of lock, so that i can't play it in an CD-Drive of a PC. It would be illegal to install certain programms to crack this CD. But it isn't illegal to plug my discman into the line-in of my soundcard an record it manually!
(at least here in Germany)
