Title: New Species (real) found in Idaho
Post by: Descenter on March 16, 2005, 05:23:46 pm
In Mountain Home, Idaho, National Gaurd biologist, Dana Quinney, has recently discovered a new type of shrimp, named the "fariy shrimp", which lies dormant in the desert during the summer months, and then awakens when rain falls creating ponds.  A few weeks of mating, eating, and birthing are about all any of these creatures can expect. Buried in baked summer soil or frozen winter earth, the offspring can survive for years before hatching.  This crustean is approximately 3 inches in lenth and 1 inches in width.

wow!
neat!

I'm a bit disapointed, though, when I first saw the pictures I thought it might be a trilobite. allas, it is a mear shimp, but a shimp with a cool life cycle.

"Indeed"

yeah the trilobites have been extinct now for awhile now, and even if it was a trilobite, they couldn't call it a new species, since they have know about thoes for practically forever

got to admit though it does look like one.  Maybe it is an ancestor of it..... oooooooh.... scary thought

Could have been a different species of trilobite, IIRC trilobites aren't one "species" (I remember something about Cryptolithus and something called a Phacops as both being trilobites)

i want one of those. that's the sort of thing you keep in a tank in your waiting room so patients can walk in, look at it, think about what sort of doctor keeps that in their waiting rooms, and then walk out again.

Err... yeah. Trilobita is actually a class - quite a bit furhter up the taxonomical tree.

From www.trilobites.info (good site)

Quote
They constitute an extinct class of arthropods, the Trilobita, made up of nine orders, over 150 families, about 5000 genera, and over 15,000 described species.

The main thing to remember is that it is only 3 inches long.  Pretty small if you ask me.

3 inches is pretty large for a shrimp, imho :p
That's larger than most little beasts you find in the deserts, like scorpions, etc. Well anyway, it's funky, I want one, I cold put it in the beds of people I don't like. Would be cool if it would make screechy sounds, too.

The (first mentioned species) i bet the vasudans would love. The dealicies of their diet. I wonder if the (first mentioned species) could be moved and mass bred in another place, more suitable for them so they didnt have to hybernate for yearz and have months of trying to breed right :P. How many they could have then.. hmm
