VLADIVOSTOK, March 16 (RIA Novosti) - The Amur Cossack Army will be re-established in the Russian Far East. The decision came up as the Council for Cossack Affairs under the presidential envoy plenipotentiary to federal district Far East gathered for session in Khabarovsk today.
The United Cossack Army will bring together the now dispersed Cossack communities in the Khabarovsk Territory, the Amur Region, and the Jewish Autonomous Region.
Attending the session were Cossack troops atamans (commanders) from all parts of the Russian Far East, and federal presidential adviser Gennadi Troshev, says Evgeni Anoshin, press secretary to envoy Konstantin Pulikovsky.
Run! Run for the hills! The Cossaks are coming!

forgive my ignorance, but, what?
-
The Cossacks were the infamous cavalrymen of the old Russian army. They hailed from the east.
-
It's been around 85 years since they were disbanded, isn't it? Maybe Putin is going for Czar instead of Comrade...
-
Bob: the Cossaks were the shock troops for Tsarist Russia. Burly mountain people, riding around on horses.

did it say why he was doing this?

Well, I don't think they're actually going to be riding around on horses (hey, who knows) but the concept is funny. Imagine hearing news that there's been a Comanche Indian raid on some village.

No, even worse, imagine hearing news that Bush ordered the recent Comanche raid on Fallujah :p

Well, the Polish army had a rather glorious cavalry charge against the oncoming Panzers in 1939. No reason why Russian cavalry wouldn't be effective on today's battlefield.

Long-range weapons verse short-range?

Talking about tanks, these are pretty cool: http://www.mark-1-tank.co.uk/index-1.html

Yes, so did the French. And they both died some stupid glorious death which brought nothing but ridicule.
