You can always try buying direct from the companies. I almost did that for my Graphics Board.
What are you planning on getting (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm getting an AMD 1.3GHz (or there abouts) CPU and a SocketA motherboard to cope with it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Damn, you plannin on running a web server? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Nope, I'm planning on running todays games and (finally) getting the best out of my GeForce2 (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Any ideas on the cheapest/best (arent they the same) place to shop for these things?

If I can persuade my dad to believe that this computer is outdated so I can get a new one.
I usually get about $1500 to use on it... I can get an TB 1300MHz with GF2 Pro and 256MB RAM with that, if I drop the insane speakers (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, except I'm constructing a completly new computer and giving my old one to me mate.
If I find sommit good, I'll tell ya man. For now, you might like to check out www.pricewatch.com ("http://www.pricewatch.com") , cause some of the providers there aren't US. Hust a thought (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Haha. I get this computer when my pops gets a new one. Its 20gb, 64RAM, DVD, CD-RW, 500mhz, 21" screen, good speakers, 56 modem, TNT2 32mb.
I'm gonna add a **** load of stuff to it to make it the ultimate gaming machine.

The 1300's are a waste of cash unless you're running a web server. I run everything just fine on an AMD Thunderbird 650. If you're going with Intel, and 800 or 850 should be just fine and pump the rest of it into RAM and an good video card.
As for buying, you could try tccomputers.com I got all my stuff from there with no regrets.
Hope this helps.

Hey, I'm not paying for it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
And the 1300 will keep me going for the next two years, at least. I get a new PC about every 2-3 years, depending on how fast they advance.
-
Agreed, I'm trying to future proof my system, the 3D card and sound card are good for at least another 2 years but I badly need to upgrade from a P2 350MHZ, which isn't really high end anymore (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Also I plan to get more into rendering and the extra beef of a 1300 will probably make the easier for me.

H4w @ your GTS - my Kyro 2's going to be half the price, faster and with better quality. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

As if I care, it's better than a Voodoo anyway, so feel sorry for all of them instead (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
So, anyone have any bright ideas apart from those already given? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

well..
www.dabs.com ("http://www.dabs.com") usually offer fairly good deals on most packages.
also try www.overclock.co.uk ("http://www.overclock.co.uk") for pre-tested gadgets
DONT WHATEVER you do go to a PCworld or any small store...you'll only wind up spending money on labour charges and stuff.
I used both of these places and nobody i heard of has had a problem with them.
They are also quite good at returns.

Hmm, I've definitely heard good things about Dabs, I'll give them a go first I think... thanks for your (and everyone elses) help. Cheers all!
