My friend and I have aquired freespace 2, and gotten Open installed and it works fine in singleplayer, but if we attempt to create a multiplayer game to play the campaign over the LAN we just get a crash. Any ideas?
-
If you didn't yet, try to create new pilots to use in multi games.
Cheers!

And

Enjoy!

Tried that. Once we click "create game" we get a loading screen for a half a second and then it crashes. Both our PCs suffer the same problem.
edit: Thanks for the welcome though.

What type of game are you trying to play? On a LAN or via FS2NetD? If you're trying to play on PXO you're wasting your time as it doesn't exist any more.
-
On a LAN. His PC is literally 3 feet from mine. We've not done this in a LOOONG time, so we really have no clue how to set it up, so maybe there's an option we simply both missed.

Do you have all those downloaded Except the last 3?
Do you have FS2netD?
-
Have the VPs, do not have FS2netD. Where do I get that?
-
If you're playing over a LAN then you don't need it (it's the replacement for PXO in FS2_Open).
Just out of interest do you both have firewalls on your PCs? I had one hell of a time getting my two PCs to play FS2 as I would get hard locks whenever I'd try to get the two to connect even though both computers had been configured to allow FS2 access to the internet and the network.
-
No, it wouldn't do anything, it just freaked out at "create game."
-
I tried this on 2 PC's, and a laptop, with the old build and the current build (3_6_5). I get the same problem, crashes after clicking the create server button. when I try to run a dedicated server, it seems to crash when loading the missions. I have all the mv_* packs installed, I dunno.
I just discovered FS2 and fs2_scp a few weeks ago. It's the most fun sim I've played in years. I want to play the co-op single player campaigns with my roommate over a LAN. I really wish this would work! any new thoughts greatly appreciated!!

The Old Build won't work with the media.vp files installed (The old build is basically FS2 with minor changes).
Try running a LAN game using the standard retail version of FS2. If that doesn't work then we've learned quite a bit more about what the problem could be.
If you get any error messages post them up.

I was messing around with this and got it to work (initially had the crash problem as well) - version 3.6.5. Just follow the directions exactly as in the Game Warden post:
http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267
make sure you set up your username and password in game before starting a server, make sure the pxo config file is in your data directory (that is what getting FS2netD means - that file, placed properly).
EDIT: fixed spelling
-
I saw the Game Warden post, but I didn't do all of it (creating a polit, etc) because I figured I didn't need to worry about that if all I wanted to do was play some LAN, but I'm gonna give it a try now. I'll let you know.
I've been playing the retail version with my roomie, but it just dosen't have the same, oh I dunno.. gorgeousness and gorgeousity? of SCP.
Hopefullt this works.
Well, It looks like this fixed the problem! I'm able to get to the mission select screen now. I'm curious as to why connection to FS2NetD is neccesary, for LAN play, although this isn't a problem for me. is the connection to the network somehow validating the missions? ANyway, thanks for the suggestion.
-
It shouldn't be necessary. It just seems like LAN play was being affected by a bug of some sort that FS2NetD doesn't have.
-
like karajorma said - and something i missed first time aorund - it SHOULD not be necessary, but who knows. someone looking at the MP code might be able to figure it out. regardless, glad it worked!
on a side note, does anyone know if you can just do direct ip games instead of all the mucking with the pxo module in the game?
i have been looking for my manual, but can not find it. is there a pdf online or any such thing? thx.
