Title: I hope I dont seem too out of line, but...
Post by: Scuddie on March 21, 2005, 12:47:58 am
I think that once the major crashing issues/bugs are resolved with FS2Open, I think another code freeze would be a good idea.  Why, you may ask?  Because for some reason, your wonderful accomplishments make me yearn for content creation, yet it is as if God himself is holding the key to my plans over my head and teasing me with it using the stick of a broken FRED2Open.

It may seem out of line for me to say this, but WHY THE HELL??!!  Why hasnt FRED2Open been nearly as big a priority as FS2Open?  Wonderful new SEXPs are created, terriffic new methods of mods are implemented, but it feels like I have to use frikkin NOTEPAD in order to do anything with it!  What good are all these wonderful things if you cant even tell the game to use them?

I acknowledge that the FRED2 tree is a "jumbled nightmare to be avoided at all costs" (or something like that), and I also acknowledge that some are working on it (thanks again Phreak for the recent build :)).  However, I cannot accept that the most unstable portion of SCP is being given the least bit of attention.

I dont know about you guys, but I REALLY dislike having to use retail FRED2 10% of the time, and use notepad 90% of the time.  It's just not practical.  It would be much nicer to have FRED2Open with consistent mission saving, inteligent error handling, and an engine that wont freeze up the nv4_disp driver!  I dont like seeing BSODs in WinXP.  They are a bad omen.

Forgive me for being so uptight.  Maybe that badger that crawled up my ass is getting to me.

We are currently planning a major renovation of FRED.

In the meantime, look here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,31451.0.html).

To be fair, it's only logical that the focus on development is on the playing experience rather than the content-creation tools.

True.  But it is also logical that if there is little focus on the content-creation tools, the playing experience can only go so far.

See, I can talk wisdom, too :D.

part of the reason why fred has fallen apart so much is it has been seperated from FSO early on, and few were able tobuild it.

I must be crazy or something. I don't really have any problems with FRED2 Open. It's crashed once or twice but that's about it. What was so different about retail FRED?

Try moving anything on the y-Axis, placing a waypoint or doing a mission briefing in anything after 3.5.5.

That said 3.5.5 itself is superior to retail in every way.

And if you still don't see anything wrong with FRED2Open after doing that then you have an unusually high medichlorine count I guess. ;)

Whuh? Well, the waypoints and y-axis thingies were fixed in phreak's build, weren't they?

Though I understand about the briefing icons not showing up, but they're still not that hard to do without the icons. When you do a box select in the briefing editor, it only selects briefing icons, so you can lock the selection and drag it around...

That was the point. He's fixed one of the major annoying bugs in FRED  :)

True but it is rather annoying to use especially when you used to be able to see what your were doing in previous builds.

Personally I've always used the latest version of FRED myself. The bugs were annoying but they never reached the point where they made FRED unusable.
