Title: Alternating Primaries
Post by: Trivial Psychic on March 24, 2005, 08:12:47 pm
Howdy all.  This is a feature suggestion.  What is the feasability of allowing primary banks to alternate fire when linked, if they are both the same weapon.  Now currently, rate of fire is reduced when linking primary banks, but if the 2 or more weapon types are selected with differeing fire rates, they will fire out of sequence... as it should be.  However, it would be useful if, should both banks mount the same weapon, or one with the same fire rate, that instead if both banks firing simultaneoulsy, they fire alternately.  Now, a player can do this currently, by starting with one bank selected, begin firing, then switched to linked mode while still firing (at just the right time) which will result in alternating fire.  While making this default would certainly break compatability, a command line flag or ship flag would certainly be the more acceptable option.

Further difficulties would arise however, with ships that mount more than 2 banks of primaries, such as the Seraphim.  If I'm flying one with all the same weapon in all 3 banks, I would expect that all 3 banks would fire in series.  Lets say for example, that this weapon has a standard firewait of 1 second, but that is reduced to 2 seconds in linked mode.  That means that normally, if all banks are selected, all 3 will fire together every 2 seconds.  If however, I'm using the alternating mode, the first bank will fire, followed .6 seconds later by the 2nd bank, followed .6 seconds later by the 3rd bank, and .6 seconds later by the 1st bank again.  Each bank waits 2 seconds between shots, but they are ofset from each other by .6 seconds, resulting in an increase in fire rate.  Now, lets say I've got 2 banks mounting this weapon, and another that mounts a weapon with a standard 1.5 second firewait, and a 3 second firewait in linked mode.  The result would be banks 1 and 2 firing 1 second apart from each other, and bank 3 firing every 3 seconds.  If I had a ship that had 4 primary banks and they all mounted weapon A, they would each fire .5 seconds apart (you see a trend here I trust).  If that 4-bank ship has 2 of weapon A and 2 of weapon B (AABB), then
bank 1 and 2 will fire 1 second apart from each other, and banks 3 and 4 will fire 1.5 seconds apart from each other.

So I ask, what is the feasability of this?

Well it kinda doesn't effect gameplay all that much, and is probably alot of work for a small gain.
I don't think it's really necessary...

What we do need, is to have a burst mode... :D

actually there is quite a big use for this. The BSG TC mod, ST TC, can definatly gain from this.

? Seems kind of redundant to me...
