I tried a planet-tutorial this day, together with another one for a ring.
It's amazing to see what's photoshop is able to do, but who the hell figures out such combined functions and settings, without a tutorial you must probably study photoshop a long time I guess :)
While I'm quite happy with the planet, I realized that a realistic ring is extremly difficult. Nevertheless, I thought I show it off, what do you think ?

hmm... you should give planet rings more details. The best way however would be to render them using particle systems.
Have you used Lunarcell for the planetary map? (looks good)
-
The ring cuts off very abruptly; it's easy to tell they don't actually extend all the way around. It also starts to get hazy well before the terminator line, which looks a bit funny...
-
The ring needs some work, and the lower right of the planet should still be very slightly visible, as should the ring. Considering the positioning of the light, the planet should get dark first, then the ring.

I created Jupiter.

hmmm...the unlit side is much smaller than the lit side, which would mean the sun is either taking up more than half of the sky, or there are many bright light sorces shining on it.
also, the planet texture seems to change as it gets toward the dark side.

so it would seem...
wait, it does not look like Jupiter! :)

It's a ball surrounded by rings... Enough Jupiter for me. :p

um... saturn has the rings... not jupiter.

lols.
Hey would anyone be interested in taking a stab at making a slightly cartoonish planet for me?
I'm referring to Hiigara from the Homeworld series.
Piccy linkage here: http://homeworld2.sierra.com/img/gallery/large/screen_12.jpg
If it's possible to create the texture for a sphere for use in max for rendering bonus.
:) ...? Any takers?

It's strange what things you find when putting off work.....

lol Thanks for the link and the image. :)
I'll have to try and make some kind of sphere map for it.

I can eat that. Nice and pasty.

Actually Jupiter does have rings (http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/jupiter/rings.html&edu=high). Much fainter than those Saturn has but they do exist. :)
That said Luigi's model definately looks much more like Saturn :)
-
actually each gas giant in the Solar System has rings.

Then I made Saturn. Whatever!
