-{[The One Hundred Polygon Cruiser Constest]}-
In this contest, you have to make a cruiser with 100 polygons or less. After one week, I will call a vote, and the winner will be the proud maker of the most fps-friendly capital ship in the game, while still looking good.
READYSETGO!!!!!
-
I would enter this one, but it's too high poly.:ha:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,31639.0.html
-
Here.
Oh wait. It's actually at 1300 polies currently. Silly me.
-
how bout you dont use rounded edges. like that awful utility frieghter, except with 100 polys not 20.
-
Why, though? When 1300 polies has little effect on the FPS as it is.
-
Raa, please tell me that's Vasudan ;7
-
Raa's looks like a terran moloch.
-
I don't think its about making something good, its about seeing who can make the best looking model with that little amount of polies.
-
I can't even flesh out a general hull shape in 100 polys. 300, sure. But 100's just too few. I mean, I use turrets with more polys than that and don't think a thing about it.
-
you can always make a really highly detailed ship out of tens of thousands of polyons, render it, save the render as a .jpg, and use it as a texture map on a 2 polygon plane. Bam. 2 polygon cruiser.
-
 @ Carl, but thats cheating. :p
I might take a poke at this. Does it have to be textured? Or just the kewlest looking model?
-
Why in the name of steve would you want to make a 100 poly cruiser in the first place?
-
For fun. And to take my mind off the constant pain in my gut.

I thought about using that method for extreme distance lod's. Using 2 planes would be better though. Get a plane for X and Y axis intersecting.

Here is mine:

Wait, that would be 6k polies. ;)
I think I'll take part in this contest. (Although I'm sure I will not win.)
-
huh. If you're going to throw that in, then I'm putting this in:
-
Ok, here is my 'real' first try:
(http://img195.exs.cx/img195/9154/cruiseer9fk.png) (93 polygons, so I've 7 polies left for the turrets, duh :nervous: )
I think 100 polies is a bad limit. Well, it is a challange. ;)
-
Exactly 100 polys.
I'm a shoo-in because nobody else has made one in 100 or less!
-
Are you sure? I'm not able to make them out.
Anyway, looks like I won one cometition :drevil: .
@Singh This model looks a bit like a boss in StarFox 1... ;)
I think I should use this similey again: :drevil:
-
that box is 100? Kinda wasteful.
-
the flat hollow boxy thing looks better... Try modifying each vertex you have to make it the most detailed you can get it while still having 100 or less polys.
-
This is my entry, and it has three turrets, the cruiser is at 98 polys.:D Not very pretty tho.
-
Looks like an arrow.
-
flat boxy thing is it triangolated???
becouse box in max = 12 poly
in ts = 6 poly
-
An excersize in making a very clean mesh :) 100 polies exactly.

-
Looks like a very low-budget Deimos.

That depends on how you use Max. As a polygon, a box has six faces/polys externally. (yes, I know it's still internally triangulated. Yes, I still count that. But if you're going to, especially for Freespace conversion, you should count it in TS too.)
-
here is mine 98 polys with three turrets:)
now gona textre it:D
-
I don't get this poly - face stuff.
Is my model under 100 polies?

-
No, it's way over.
-
Meh:
It's got around 136 Faces - **** knows how many Polys.....
-

Nonsense, it looks like it has 96 polys, it just makes good use of e'm.
Did a test, a cube in Wing3D is 6 polys, same as a cube from truespace 3.2.
-
780 polys.
-
Hmmm, I think something is wrong with your model program, cause I don't know how that is 780 polys. What are you using?
-
He's got two cylinders, that's where it's coming from
-
Yeah, the cylinders are >300 each.
-
Are they higher in other programs than TS, cause their only 20 polys.in TS 3.2
-
Anyone here ever consder converting some Descent 3 ships (the robots, not the fighters, although the Player Flyable Magnum-AHT at a larger size would be great)------- They're all reallllly low poly, LOL ;7 :drevil:
-
DaBrain, that thing ain't triangulated, that's why your poly count is low. A polygon is just a closed path of lines, but FS2 counts polys as triangles. To see your real count, select all the faces, right click, go down to tesselate, and go triangulate. After you see how many you have, you may want to go undo. I find it much easier to work with untri'ed models.
-
:( Now it's almost 300 polies...
Looks like I have to start again.
-
Christ, my new Carrier is 1950 polys (tris) and all I've got so far are the engine blocks. Why bother with this archane limit? Are you planning on using it as LOD8 or something?
-
I think it's just for fun. (Or perhaps for a gigantic mass-battle scene... ;7 )
BTW the model I posted first has nearly 13k polies now... damn.

Ok- looking good.
USE NON-TRIANGULATED COUNTING- THE BOX COUNTS AND THE LODDED DEIMOS COUNTS.
-
im surprised nobody has posted the GTD Cube
...and what happened to the Array? Every time i click a link it does nothing.
-
My cruiser made from 2 boxes, that's 98 polys?
-
(http://www.freewebs.com/blitzerland/blah.jpg)
The Winchester Tabby-powered Cruiser, GTPDC Blitzerwhatever.
Urm, how do I count polies in Gmax? Kinda a n00b to modeling...don't even have the slightest idea how to assign textures yet.
-
Try the properties dialogue. (Edit->Object Properties). That's where it is in Max, at least.
-
Found it. Thanks, Stratcom. It's looking really spiffy, actually. Now I just have to find some way of converting it to a format Fs2 can tolerate...bloody Gmax.
Right, I'll stop spamming this thread.
*runs off to try to find a convertor*
-
POF!

It's gone AWOL for a bit I think. If I had the picture of the cube saved somewhere I would've posted it. Maybe run a search of the forums? That sometimes works. :p
-
This isn't the real cube, it's a mockup. But it gets the point across. 20 verts, 16 polys.
-
This is about as efficient as I can get. Max says 192 faces, and a manual count (as I went along, rather than all at the end) gives me 97 polies.
-
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh/gtd.jpg)
-
Wow, it's been ages since I saw that last. My cube is horridly out of proportion.
-
Steak's isn't even all that cube-ish. It's more of a GTD Box really.
-
Incidentally, I remembered about my Chocolith:
-

How about the GTD Remote Control? :D
-
(http://img226.exs.cx/img226/9801/1008vs.jpg)
196 faces in max
it's probobly around 100 non triangulated
-
Since we're requesting cubes. :D
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/FAQ-Images/Modding-Tutorial/Modding-Pic1.jpg)
:D I might have a go at something a little more serious in a bit :D

LOL!!! That is hard to best-well done!
-
Not exactly below 101 polies, but it does look low-poly.
#1
-
And from behind, trying to whisper that it was intended not to be low-poly when finished.
-
I've made the GTD Doomcube.
-
Thief! That's my GTC Great Big Cube with a texture on it!
-
Read it! It's the GTD Doomcube!
-
How bout GTD FLAT PLANE
-
GTD Flat Triangle. Only three vertices!
-
GTD Edge.
2 vertices & one line.
-
Ok second try:
GTC Invisible Advanced stealth recon crusier
(http://img59.exs.cx/img59/5140/gtcinv3wm.png)
0 polygons, 0 faces, no turrets (It's a recon cruiser!)
Hehe I win in polycont and you can't say it looks bad. :p
-
The GTD Vertex. It's a dot.
-
GTD Antimatter
-infinity polygons
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture as it would cause the universe to sponteneously combust and disassemble. Annoying, that.
-
I´m surprised no one has entered the GTD Gonads into the competition. It was low poly enough. :p
-
The GTD Suck My Balls?
-
Why is this thread drifting toward all spam?
-
The GTD Spam! Now with more meat!
-
Im surprised no one made the GTC Death Star (Big circle with a dent).
-
I'm not. A 14-sided sphere (that's 14 segments, all the way around) is 98 polys. And it doesn't look at all spherical.

Because it's a fairly pointless 'contest' - who would ever actually use a completed 100 poly cruiser? And why?

Those who are not interesting in numbers - like me.

Polycount means nothing if it still manages to look good.
-
Polycount means something if it prevents something from ever looking good. 100 polys for a turret, or a bomb, or even a small drone fighter; fine. 100 polys for anything larger is a waste of time; you'll never get enough shape out of that to make it look distinctive. That's what aldo's implying, not that it's below anyone's talent to try but that the limit makes detail of any kind absolutely impossible.
-
With good textures, even a cruiser of 100 polies can look good. Just imagine X-wing Alliance(If you have played with it). The textures make a ship look good, with minimal number of polies in the model.
-
I don't buy that. Not for Freespace anyway. If you either have really primitive lighting, or you aren't going to get close to the ship you're looking at, then sure, I'll buy that argument. But with a lighting scheme as complex as that in FS, and being able to literally get on top of whatever you are looking at, and those 100 polys get ugly fast. Normal maps would offset that a little bit, but you're talking about mapping detail beyond plating onto a shape, and once you're in close that is not only problematic but it looks horrible. Especially with spec.

Not by modern standards.

You mean it's ok to spam a thread just because it maybe pointless? If you don't like the contest, don't post in it. And you would'nt want your thread spamed if someone else thought it was pointless.
-
Well, there's no moderator in this forum, yet. So this is what you get.

I knew this o' my post would attract attention. :)
Still, I keep me opinion. You certainly know how persistance I am.
Let's not discuss this, at least not here.
If ye want t'discuss, just open a new thread an' point me at it.
