We... err.... did have some users with the 'Get Firefox' icon under the name...

Now only Clave does, IIRC.

That's not his goal AFAIS. It's a HLP-ized version of the Firefox logo to use as our own as part of the advertisation campaignm,

YOUR Firefox? Unless you contributed code to it, it ain't yours.

And what you're describing is a favicon. They're not unique to Firefox. Most browsers support them these days.

so if i say "my car" that would only be accurate if i worked in some way, shape or form for General Motors and/or Cadillac, and if i actually contributed something to the design of my car?

A car is a tangible. Software is not. As you're well aware, standard usage with software is "my _____ OF software_name", where the blank is "version", "install", "copy", etc.

I have HLP bookmarked in Firefox, and it just uses the little Gamespy dude as the icon. Works for me.

For www.3dap.com/hlp it doesn't show anything but I have the Hard Light forum bookmarked as well and it shows (http://i.deviantart.com/icons/cat/digital.gif) which is from deviantART so it's kinda odd.

I've noticed that occasionally when I go from a site with a pic to another, it'll often not quite notice the change. Could be another flaw along the same lines.

I suppose you don't drive YOUR car or use YOUR computer...nevermind YOUR toothbrush and other assorted items we all commonly refer to as ours.

Store an icon called "favicon.ico" in every directory?

Or add a link rel for the favicon to every page and use just one favicon file.

He isn't - I am.
...and by the power entrusted to me by the people I hereby enlist Firefox as one of our kind.
After all he's red, wouldn't take money, and works for the betterment of the community.
...and his ideals are close to HLP's unique open Mod handlement, so we should by all means award him with our banner.

Oh for goodness' sake, stop being such a pedant; don't you have work to do or something?

Erm. As far as I know, it's enough to upload a single favicon.ico file to root of the home dir. Works from there to any subdirs. Not even seperate reference to favicon.ico is required. Could be prevented server-side though.

Good god people, favicons have been around ever since IE5. Their implementation is not a subject of mystery or debate.

Having an HLP favicon for HLP won't (currently) work because we don't have access to the root of the server.

However, there is a method that's not as widely supported using HTML meta tags or something - I'm not familiar with it, though.

Go to this page (http://www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp/staff/setekh/favicon_test.htm) and bookmark it. I think I just never got round to implementing it board-wide.

As a note to Flaser, you're not the official board Communist. That would be Comrade Shrike, if I remember correctly.

Took the words right out my mouth. :p

As for the icon, I've actually wondered about that myself. When I bookmarked HLP, for some weird reason it got the MSN butterfly icon.

I wouldn't mind seeing the little red spinny thing up there. But its hardly a critical issue. Still... :)

Neither is Raa.

Beside being the "official" or not, the thing runs in my blood. :p

Root of the server is not needed, I think you should have access to ".../freespace" folder. "hlp" and "forums" are subfolders under "freespace" so it should show up.

Setekh's favicon works for me. Remember, that if your browser has cached the old icon, it may not display the new one and loading the old icon from cache instead.
