Title: Best website designs on the internet?
Post by: IceFire on March 29, 2005, 06:12:06 pm
Ok guys...I'm looking for some inspiration at the moment.  What do you guys consider the best designed websites on the internet.  They can look cool, they can be simply functional, they can have a bit of both.  Websites can be corporate or artistic or anything really...what sites do you visit and say: "wow, thats cool".

depends what you're looking for.

Aside from the main design hubs (Crossmind ("http://www.crossmind.net/cnt/sites/sites.php?cdnsession=3974ffefacbaab0321715a02e262e8e3"), Surfstation ("http://www.surfstation.lu/") etc), what you should check out is Template Monster ("http://www.templatemonster.com/"), great for just having access to a ton a superbly designed websites, which you can then rip off.

Right now, my fave is this ("http://www.transmediale.de/page/home.0.2.html").

But again, if you can be more specific I can probably dig up something.

In Regards to What I Like:[/u]

Easy of use and simplicity.

I don't need page transitions and javascript snow. I need buttons that I can actually ****ing see - that aren't tiny or huge or obscene colours or invisible in the clutter of the background image. Javascript should be functional, serve a purpose. Moving things should be informative, not decorative.

And people should only work to their limits. Nothing says 'asshole' like a site with huge amounts of amateurish graphics.

And most importantly: Colours should make sense.

This, is good: http://www.penguinbomb.com/blog

This, in it's own way, is good: http://maddox.xmission.com

This, is not: http://www.stwww.com/index2.html

This, is not: http://www.desktopstarships.com/

But the blog was quite funny! :D

Getting script errors on Penguinbomb there chief. And what you're talking about it usability, not design (in the eye candy sense). Usability is a given, unless you're a complete amateur and opt for the spinny, flashy "new interface paradigm" bull****.

Penguinbomb is boned because I accidentally overwrote it's index.php with the Urizen Database's index.php.

Shame too. I liked that page. Ah, well....

Well.

If we're going for professional.

www.darkhorizons-lore.com

If we're going for simple.

http://maddox.xmission.com/

Just my preferences. Both are the best and unique in their own fields.

The first one is complexish, but everything is organised nicely, it has pretty much everything that a generic website needs these days, and you don't have to strain yourself in order to get to it.

The other one offers simplicty, bottom line. Everything is very easy to access, although it loses on the "cool" points for flashyness (hence it wasn't designed for that).

Those were excellent links.  I still haven't found the one that inspires me to do something but at least I can look at stuff.

Much appreciated.  I'm fighting a creative block.

The best template (http://www.hypertemplates.com/) site I've come across.

List of Inspirational Sites (*Static, †Important Note, In no particular order). Also checked so theres no dead links :).

I've got pictures of a lot of template, logos, and other stuff but that would have to be sent by email because its too big in file size.

I have heaps more static website favourites but I just can't find them :(. I'll try later.

Later :D

Pfft, I could have done that. I just linked to the websites who's job it is to link to other websites. Optimal laziness, you see.

Good work though, the ones you posted all kick ass.

edit: oh yeah, and Phe4R the Polish

no, you do not really need to learn flash. css and xhtml can go pretty far without.
