Howdy.
I'm having a problem with the shinemaps. They seem to come completely on or completely off when I reposition my ship. There's no shine effect, it just lights the ships up completely. I couldn't find any posts explaining this problem.
Also, thanks for helping me relive my childhood :) You guys are doing a great job with this.

Hi.
What build and cmdline parameters are you using?
-
Build 3.6.5
Let me see if I can remember the parameters (I'm at work):
-spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -nomotiondebris -targetinfo -3dwarp -tbpwarpeffects -ballistic_gauge -spec_point .1 -spec_exp 14 -spec_static .1 -spec_tube .1 -ambient_factor 75 -fov .39
I had all of the "-spec****" parameters set to the recomended values in the readme, but changing them doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm also using an older video card (its a mobility on a 1.5 year old Gateway laptop)
Oh yeah, where's my beam? I'm new :)

Where are our manners :D
Gunnery control, target Mergatroid. Fire!
:welcome:
Though I'm a little curious as to why you know about the beam if you're as new as your post count would indicate.
Have you tried it without the -spec parameters completely?

Long time lurker most likely.
Mergatroid : Do you actually have any of the media.vp files? IF you don't shines would be applied uniformly to all ships.
You can get the latest set of them here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,31705.0.html)

Thanks Strat. I've been lurking for about a week.
Removing the spec parameters doesn't change anything and I have the most recent mv_zpack.vp, although not the new ones in that link you provided kara.

Doh! I just realized I still have all of the files in my data folder from the HOTU download. That would probably do it, eh?
-
Not sure if it'd majorly harm anything, but it won't help you get sound, no.
Some of the PCX textures might still be needed though, watch out with the deletes...
-
I had downloaded all of the original vp files from fractux's ftp server but somehow missed sparky_fs1.vp. Those are the files that are still in my data directory so I could get the game to run until I had gotten the sparky file. I imagine this is what is causing my problem.

Sparky_FS1? I presume that's a typo. If not the file on the FTP is probably an old file from the port (and therefore not needed).
It shouldn't be causing you problems with the shine maps though. There are no shine maps in HOTU cause it's a retail build.
Can't hurt to grab it though.
-
Yeah, that was suppsed to be sparky_fs2.
Won't having all of the original retail files from the HOTU dowload still in the data directory cause this? I thought the engined looked there first, before loading anything in the vp files.

Yes it does but the HotU textures are pretty much the ones in the vp file. Shine maps on the other hand are made by the new textures in the media.vp files.
Shine maps don't replace the original textures you see. They are additional textures loaded as well as actual texture file. Since the HotU build didn't have shine textures the game should load them from the media.vp.
Any chance of you getting a screenshot so you can show us what it looks like for you?
-
Sure. I'll try to post them tomorrow.
