[q]Pope John Paul II was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church late Thursday night as his health deteriorated, a Vatican source has told CNN.
The sacrament does not necessarily mean that the pope is dying. Last rites -- also known as the sacrament of the sick or extreme unction -- are commonly given to people who are seriously ill as well.[/q]

So he seems to be going downhill very rapidly at this point.

If the Vatican wants to keep up with the latest fashions, they'll pull his feeding tube.

That's kinda harsh..

Not to mention in very poor taste :doubt:

Clever isn't always funny...
Too bad for the pope though. I happen to attend a 3 year old school that bears his name so we'll definantly hear about this when we go back.
-
I tried seeking some confirmation for this story, and as of right now, it seems that the Vatican is refusing to say anything. Despite that, I'd say odds are the College of Cardinals will be forced to convene at the Vatican soon.
-
All that, and yet, for some unfathomable reason, he won't step aside and let a new pope be named.

Stubborn?

Against the rules of the Catholic church actually.

w00t! Fight the power!

You mean he has to stay Pope until he dies, even if he can't do his job. Does that strike anyone else as slightly caca?
-
He can't be forced to resign by people threatening him, etc.
-
And anyway, he can barely speak.
-
so how long do you think he drags his life out?
-
What, you wanna start placing bets on when the old geezer kicks off?
Shame on you :p

Who's threatening him? Being Pope is likely a high stress positon. Such a position would be taxing in the best of circumstances. He's trying to recouperate from a major illness. Logic suggests, for the good of the flock, that he step down, allow a new Pope to be named and heal.
-
Nobody's threatening him...was just a reason that the people who thought of all this might have made sure he couldn't resign. Also, you're supposed to be completely dedicated, until your last breath. If he had been living the time of the original writers of the "rules" (Vatican Law I think..) he would have been dead long ago and everything would have been fine and dandy.
-
Doesn't Vatican run by "Vatican 2" that was written in the '60s though?
-
Yeah, but I don't think they changed stuff like that.
If they did, then it's still probably symbolic that the Pope is the Father until he dies. There is no "stepping down" after you've had enough, 'cause you're in it for the long run. The unfortunate side affect of this I think, is that you are screwed in a situation like this.
I hate to say it, but I don't think he's going to recover anytime soon. Meanwhile, it's not killing the Church to leave him in office for a bit.

its always fun to have a pool or somthin of that nature;7

Viva la resitance!
-
I've read the Pope wrote a letter which stated he would resign when he was judged (due to the Parkinsons') to be no longer mentally competent; problem is, which cardinal would be willing to claim that?
The other thing is, he is totally dedicated to being Pope; it's his life. I doubt he'd resign voluntarily, even if his health is collapsing.
-
He's had a heart attack now anyway, just be patient.

Are you excited about something?

BTW this thin' about him confirmin' 17 new bishops. The hearty can't speak. Anyone think that th'priest hied in, hung about for five minutes an' then just said t'everyone outside "Hey! The pope just made us all bishops. Where do I hie t'collect me pay raise?"
EDIT : Italian priest speaking in pirate lingo just made the joke even better :D

"Well, he didn't say I couldn't be one!"
