Seriously, April 1st went away 3 hours ago (only my timeline matters), and nobody cares anymore.
Restore?
I want the BWO forums to check up on a few things.
-
Yarr, th'admin be fixin' up a few thin's.
Ye be gettin' yer upd'te very soon.
-
Blame goob the workhorse for a lot of the stuff too :p
-
Right.
Booooooooriiiiiiiing,
Brin' it back.
-
I'll not have blasphemy on the ship! Restore what, I ask you? Banality, tedium? I say we keep it like this. Permanently!
-
Heh. Hehehe. This is fun.
-
lol. Stop it you lot! :p
-
it's only 8:40, my (and therefore correct) time.
-
I already stated my timeline is the only one that counts.
So it's over.
Bring it baaaaaaaack..................

bah!
No!, its almost past midday on the 2nd of april!

in japan, perhaps.
-
Still 9:10 here. Have fun for the next few hours.
-
Australia actually.
-
Actually, an th'admins are doin' what I think they are doing, it's a pretty ingenious way o' ensurin' th'latest backup really be th'latest. If th'forums are gone, we can't exactly post in them.
Stupid pirate filter.
-
I'm going to sleep now. Let an0n do what he wants 'till tomorrow. :p
-
Snipes smells.
-
So was th'April fool's joke just makin' us all talk like hicks/pirates. Meh, I thought it would be somethin' better.
-
Are we done yet? I'm bored.
-
DONE!
-
well more of the forum has disapeared.
NM
-
Know what?
I'm tired of this.
-
Seconded. At least the filter is gone, but where the heck did the news forum go?
-
Well, the anarchy hasn't gotten completely old yet..sure an0n will spice things up before he's cut down.:D
-
I am pissed that all this happened. I was planning to finish the SCP website updates and then this **** happened :hopping:

Where's Raa when you need him?
It wasn't an0n. It was just our stupid staff trying to be funny.

Wow, and it only took you all day. Pure Genius.
-
Yeah, I gotta say, my respect for the staff dropped a couple of points with this. I almost wish it had actually been an0n. It wasn't funny, it wasn't creative, it was more stupid than anything...like telling everyone there're blanks in a pistol, when it's really fully loaded, and promptly proceding to shoot yourself in your foot. And then laughing and telling everybody how you fooled them.
There were a lot of ways that staff time could've been better spent to amuse everybody, but, well, I guess their priorities lie in amusing themselves alone.
Although I'm still unclear whether or not it was actually an0n posting with his account.
And I wouldn't be half as annoyed if this wasn't the one significant actin that I've seen since HLP 2.0 went online. I'd prefer seeing someone upgrade the wiki, update the news, even just add content to the main site, to breaking the forums.
Edit: Oh, and as I post it, it's now 2 AM PST, on April 2nd...
-
There's something not right lads - I wouldn't take this at face value.
-
We're trying to figure out a way to restore content that was deleted without overwriting stuff that's still here. :-/
-
So did the joke actually go wrong then? He got real access?

To **** with today's content. Archive it somewhere so that we can refer to it as necessary, sure. But for the main forums, restore us to yesterday and be done with it. In all honesty, there hasn't been anything worth saving, other than overall joke of it all, since the forums started to dissapear. And the latency in getting it back up is more annoying than 24 hours of lost spam would be.
-
I say we leave it like this. maybe we can remove the freespace forums too and just have this one. that'd be nice.
-
Why? It'd just be another useless spamming forum. You want that, you should stay at Nodewar.

lesse, how to explain this to someone who didn't get the joke until it's practically over?
well, let's just say my main fishing waters isn't nw. or even the other nw. and a "spamming forum" would need to be somewhat half-active... and thirdly, were we to compare post counts, we'd see who has the greater need for such a forum out of the two of us.

I actually IMed him. He played along, although I'm not sure if it was purposeful or not.
Anyway, glad to have HLP back :)

No, you see, I did get the joke. It wasn't funny, but that's not the point. And if you were to look at where my posts actually came from, you'd find that maybe 20% of them are even in hard light. The whole "contributing" thing, and all.

talk to the hand.

Real mature, guys.
Anyway, seems that I can make announcements, too, via the modcp... :drevil:
-
I have to be honest.... I found this April Fools irritating as hell.

Same here. :sigh:

If you guys need help with mysql let me know....ive gained some experience in restoring damaged databases using vb3....vb2 couldnt be all that different...

Well, it sort of is. I wouldn't mind losing the posts if the backup was made in the last 24 hours...merging them is just going to make everything harder.
Part of the reason why, for the first hour or so, I thought it was an0n. There were too many signs that things were actually disappearing. As a forum admin, I learned that you never **** around with database stuff unless you've got a very good reason - I honestly did not think anyone would mutilate the forums, the sole reason that 99% of the people come to HLP.
This is part of the reason why that is. I haven't used vB, but this seems like a pretty bizarre case; I wouldn't be surprised if vB doesn't have any way to automatically fix stuff in a non-hackish way. What needs to be done is something like "Import posts from backup", then "delete duplicate posts" - the latter may or may not work with backup posts.
-
No that I *really* give a ****... but it's a good thing almost everybody (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,31811.msg655247.html#msg655247) seemed to enjoy (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7372#post7372) it.
(That was sarcasm, by the way.)

HLP is down again. No really, again.
We have no idea what is up.
We are considering making the forums permanent home here.
-
Oh, dear god no. I say again: worst April Fool's day ever. Wasn't even funny, or anything. I've been lurking here during the "Days of No Account" since the beginning, and I've never seen anything this mindnumbingly stupid.
I bet it went something like this.
Admin 1: "Hey, guys, what should we do for April Fools day?"
Admin 2: "u shluld sabotoge ourselves!!!!!111! lol omg"
Admin 3: "lol good idea, it'll be so funny omg"
Admin 1: "Brilliant, peons!"
Later....
Admin 2: "lol nothing works now, community ruined lol"
Admin 3: "Oh well, it sure was funny as heck, right guys? Heh."
Admin 1: "Man, you guys are such idiots! How could you let me do this?! Now I can't even login! I gotta find a way to fix this."
Next...
an0n: "The puny ****tards seem to have ****ed their own ****ing forum. Better ****ing finish it off while they try to fix it."
Wouldn't it be so ironic, if in our weakened, HTML-splattered condition, an0n just swooped in and took control for real?
-
Yes, yes it would be.
-
Ah well, what's done is done. Best just to patiently wait for the rest of the stuff to come up, do other stuff or join FA.
-
Well FA could use beta testers. All the missions are still online and if you play from the first mission in one of the campaigns it's almost like playing a new campaign :)
-
To put it bluntly: You guys are a bunch of tight-asses. Seriously. (especially you Blitz)
I've never seen so much grief over a stupid joke. Get over it. It was...amusing.

you know, the exact same thing happened back when warpstorm did the same type of april fools joke (the oracle revolt). the staff loved it, a lot of the members hated it. I think we lost a third of the member base or something like that...
-
I thought it was awesome....but thats just me.
-
Sadly, I would be in the group that fled Warpstorm after the whole Oracle Revolt debacle. In retrospect, I really should have stayed.
-
It caught most of us by surprise, but it was a little dirty.
-
I simply cannot stand people who can't take jokes. It's like a Pet Peeve.
-
This isn't a joke.
This is unproductive. The forums are gone, and we who work on projects can't do anything about it, but wait like morons.
I'll admit the whole thing was funny for about five minutes, but then it was stretched to hours and hours on end, only to be finished with an awesome "Oh look, I ****ed up while I was joking, ha ha".
This is tragic.
-
**** happens. The people who go on about "not funny," "immature," and "stupid admins" just because they were made fools of (on April Fools Day) need to deal with it.
Project members (those who actually seem to do stuff), I can understand you're complaints. It's the people who whine and complain cause they fell for a joke that are pissing me off.
-
Ehh, it's their forum, they can **** with whatever they want.
-
You guys are taking this way too seriously. The Admins tried to entertain us with some silly antics, and some of you are getting pissed off because the forums are temporarily out of order. If your life revolves around these forums so much that you go to pieces when they get fudged around with a bit, then you need some serious help.
Some of you, (and you know who you are) need to stop *****ing about how dumb the Admins were and cool down a bit. It's just a joke people! I think we should be thanking the Admins for the great show they've put on for us, instead of whining about how it didn't go exactly as planned. The admins are working on it. The missing forums will be restored, along with your precious post counts. Lighten up! It's just a godamn joke!
-
Ok, enough is enough. We, the admins, apologize for hosted project downtime beyond the borders of April 1st. We, the admins, are doing everything we can to get the rest of the HLP forums up and running as soon as possible.
However, I must also say that we, the admins, had a blast seeing panicky forumites screaming about the end of the world despite repeated assurances by more mature members of the community that it was a (drastic) April Fools joke. We, the admins, think it was the funniest April Fools prank we've seen pulled in a long time.
And finally, I, Sandwich, am tired of hearing (almost) nothing but prissy complaints from people who have no sense of humor repeated over and over again. I know you're pissed. Go FRED something. Go eat snow. Quit your incessant whining - I heard you the first time.
*awaits barrage of PMs*
Oh, and if you're just going to tell me how heartless I'm coming across as, don't bother. I'm trying to make a point. Yes, we care about the community. Yes, we're trying to fix what we messed up. And yes, we heard the complaints the first time around. So kindly shut up. :)
-
Seconded. ;)
It's good to see an admin grow a pair. :p
-
you do have admincp access, right?
[22:17] yeah, but they seem to want to keep the posts from april 1st onwards
[22:17] That's easy
[22:17] Just install the first backup into the still-running database
[22:18] Then run a 'remove duplicate threads' thing from the AdminCP
[22:18] See, this is why they shoulda made me an Admin
-
I will never feel guilty about posting nonsensical ****e ever again.
-
A) We don't have a "remove duplicate threads" thing that I know of.
B) An0n would have made a great admin if he'd shown himself to be more trustworthy and less... wild. ;) But he knows that. Personally, I just think he couldn't stand the idea of being seen as a "nice" person. :p
-
You do realize that you can do a selective restore, right? In other words, just restore the deleted forums and leave the current ones alone. I'm fairly sure you can do that.
EDIT: Oh yeah, you came across to be very heartless :p.

Seconded....personally I found it hilarious.
First the very authentic "an0n-impression" was pure comedy gold (I wonder who made the thread in the NTV forum...that was really naughty ;)). And then the hysterical reactions from some forumites had me laughing in tears, barely holding on to my desk.
So....many people were amused by it I think, but the not-so-amused people are the ones coplmaining the loudest now.
Anyway....I think this year's prank will be hard to top in the future.

Anyways, I fell for the April Fools joke, and it took me two friggin' hours to discover it was false (did some IRC snooping). After that, it was funny for, like, ten minutes.
Still, in retrospect, it was a clever idea. Even if it went horribly wrong, as such things tend to. And I did manage to FRED a mission for my campaign, and then half-FRED a mission for nuclear's campaign, so really, the loss of forums actually added to productivity.
-
Don't bother with the posts from April 1-whenever it is restored.
If it's that important, people will repost.
-
Oh no, they want a record of how many people can't take a joke, and cannot live without their precious forums.....
-
Well, all the cool posts were from this forum, and you don't need to restore that. 'Cause it's already here. Right.
Oh no, they want a record of how many people can't take a joke, and cannot live without their precious forums.....
Heck yeah, we do! My an0n-you-idiot posts cracked me up, afterwards. I should've noticed that if it was really an0n, he would've banned me for questioning him. :p
-
We do have a "remove duplicate threads" option, and Styxx said he can do a selective restore.
Really, there are only two reasons the forums weren't restored the morning of April 2nd. In order of priority, they are:
1) Gamespy changed our database password, and they still haven't given us a new one.
2) Styxx is the one who knows the most about the forums, and Styxx isn't online on the weekends.
However, number 2 doesn't matter until number 1 is resolved. And number 2 wouldn't have prevented someone less knowledgeable about the forums but still knowledgeable about coding and databases (like me or Sandwich) restoring it a few hours later.
-
Exactly why did they change it? :p heh.
-

don't flatter yourself. haven't you screwed up just about everytime you entered the admin cp? I mean, like removing forums instead of hiding them, killing off the badges, giving an0n full access to the internals...
and how exactly is the forum still working if you don't know the password, hmm?

Ooh, you're so smart. An0n's access to the internals was due to the "voiceless" usergroup having screwed-up permissions - vB's fault. Killing off the badges was due to a bug in HLP 2.0. And Goob's deletion of forums instead of hiding them was a mistake, yes, but one made out of ignorance - he's not an expert on vB, nor should anyone expect him to be - that's not the reason he's an admin. So cool your jets.
And if you knew anything about the way forums work, you wouldn't have asked that last question.
But to answer it anyway, the password that's gone AWOL is for FTP access to the dynamic server. The only password used by the forums to operate is the login password to the MySQL database server - completely different.

Remember that month last year when all of GS's dynamic servers went down? They did some major restructuring as a result of that, part of which was the recreation of users or some such. New user, new password.
At least, that's what I gather happened.
-

No. Only the things that go wrong are noticed, because nobody notices the things that go right. :doubt:like removing forums instead of hiding them
I wouldn't have done this if I hadn't triple-checked with Styxx beforehand that the forums were all backed up. And as said previously, we didn't count on Gamespy withholding the password.giving an0n full access to the internals
This was a permissions error and had nothing to do with me. On the contrary, I spent four hours fixing all the permission errors after that.and how exactly is the forum still working if you don't know the password, hmm?
You need a password to change the database or to upload stuff, not to use it.
EDIT: Thanks, Sandwich.

like I wasn't calm, you mean, ey, sandie?? (http://www.capricornaussies.com/symon/cool%20your%20jets.JPG)
but yes, I do know a thing or two about forums, with me being admin of one with 10k members. now, goober said it was the database password that you didn't have, and I'd say a database powered forum wouldn't work to well without it. depending on the permissions of course, but I figure inserts and the likes would need to be permitted for any regular forum to work.

And you know what? Aside from the SCP peeps, who really do make headway day-by-day, I think all the rest of you people complaining about the lost productivity time on your respective projects are being whiny little babies. As if you accomplish so much in 2 days. I wish. Pfft, some (honest) people are even commenting how their productivity went up because of this mess. So go get a life, a sense of humor, or both.
I'm going to comment on this one more time, and then I'm done. I'm still annoyed at the overall flop between The Plan Friday and the lack of cooperation from Gamespy, and I really don't have as much reason as most to be concerned. I'm a freelance modder by character, and as long as my PM box and the Modding forum stay intact, I'm fine. But, I've already said my piece, and I'm sure everyone who needed to see it did. I will reiterate that screwing around with the SCP forum in particular wasn't cool, since, like you said, those guys do actually make day-to-day progress. And not all of them, much less the entire community, actually know where their backup forums are. I know WMC has a beta VP candidate that he needs feedback on, plus all of the recent builds, so they do have a legitimate gripe. The rest of the projects barely get two dozen posts a day between them, with the exception of those days that content or previews come out. But that's that.
My concern is actually the way all of this has been handled after the fact. First and foremost, there should have been an "April Fools!" thread started as soon as the forums came back up, completely or not, that explained exactly what happened and why. I know there was and still is mass confusion about what's going on. Quite frankly, I'm still a little mystified as to how it was decided that screwing around with the forum databases was a good idea in the first place, but then what do I know. I would have hoped though that Gamespy's track record on timely responses when something actually does go wrong would have at least been factored in, but whatever.
But what's worse, there's still an air of superiority being taken by those in on the joke over those who weren't, and there isn't anywhere for someone to outright say "you got me" and get a laugh out of it. Just these couple of threads that are more about what happened than the joke of it all. It's the "lets make everyone look stupid" attitude that I really don't like; it's not good community building and we don't have much of a member base to lose. More than anything else, there's enough tension on the board to cut with a knife, and that's not helping anything. Something needs to happen to diffuse it, but I'll be damned if I can think of a way to do that at this point. The joke doesn't seem to have ended, and I think that needs to happen soon.
So that's my $.02, take it or leave it.
EDIT: And what's wrong with the main page?
-
I'd like to steal it instead. :D
-
Well said, StratComm.

As the admin who wasn't in on the joke (I hadn't checked things in the last couple days so I wasn't aware of these last-minute plans) I found the entire affair to be just over the top and honestly not all that funny. Don't get me started on the whole mess involved in deleting forums. :blah: This was a grade-A cluster****.
Anyhow, for those asking why we need to wait for Styxx, it's cause the backup for the forums is at his work.

I'd have also stepped in when things started getting out of hand. :doubt:

But you didn't, things did - and Sandwich has pretty much said the rest of what I think.
Honestly, what has been done has been done. It's going to get repaired. Everyone has had their say more than once and it's now tiring to see the same old people say the same old things.
We heard the complaints first sodding time, be patient. If you can't, go elsewhere untill everything is back to normal. Rehashing the same complaints over and over again is getting nobody anywhere fast.
-
And on that note, enough has been said. You guys know where we're at with the situation and you know where you ought to be. Back to work.
