I've been a huge Star Wars fan since I was 6, and really wish I could help. But I still haven't got enough modeling skills to do any accurate ships, my texturing is piss-poor and all my good mission ideas are going in my own campaign.

I can do table editing, POF editing (POF CS style), and especially webpages, if you need any of these skills  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

do some tie fighters - they are easy - my modeling skills aren't great either - which reminds me who here should have the isd as it is  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) - someone else can retexture casue i sux at that same goes for my tie interceptor

I decided to try to make some sort of TIE/In model. After an hour of modeling in Blender and another hour getting seriously pissed at TrueSpace, I managed to churn out this ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/TIEIn.jpg").

I'm still going to put some detail on the wings and cockpit, though. But I think it's quite good, considering I only had 2 tiny pictures and my memory to use as reference.

328 polys, no textures yet.

Damnit... after adding the wing details the poly count jumped to 714, after triangulation.

it IS good, but 328 polys? that's a little too much for such a simple model, no? something's strange, looking at the model, I would have said, well, 200 polys maybe?

328 polys AFTER triangulation.

Like this improved model ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/TIEIn2.jpg") has 383 before and 714 after triangulation.

I wasted a whole lot of polys improving those panels but I'm not too keen on doing it again.

I was thinking with what you call triangulation. Triangulation is a weird thing from TS, max ALWAYS shows the polycount like if the model was triangulated (sp?). Otherwise the poly count is a fake one. triangulates only turns visible invisible polys, it deosn't creat new polys. the funny thing is that you can cheat with fs2, it uses the fake polycount from ts.

Again... you're going too complicated... use testures to get those effects... not the model ...DA (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/redface.gif)

I just figured it looked much better when they were modeled in.

And triangulation does what it's name says: it turns 4+ sided polygons into triangles. It's very true that 3D cards always render triangles. So my poly count is still way too high, I haven't figured where all the polys went. Well, anything with a sphere usually makes lots of triangles...

Damn trueSpace. Keeps crashing when I try to unwrap the cockpit area...

I'm bored with this model. If someone wants it, I can send it. But I'm going to try to model an I-7 Howlrunner or a V-Wing next, although they'll probably end up pretty crap.

You need to have more faith in yourself... At least you get something that looks like a model... I always end up with a box with spikes... or a ball with weird twisty faces on it....

Ummm... sorry, but TIE/In I assume is a TIE interceptor? What you modeled is a plain-vanilla TIE Fighter. The Interceptor has solar panels that are bent inwards at the tops and bottoms, and they also have a large cutout area at the front for extended visibility.

Umm, no. The TIE/In is the real name of the TIE fighter.

I know my Star Wars ships, YT-1300 to Nebulon B frigate to the MC80 cruisers   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Oh yeah, does ANYONE have a site where there's a decent pic of a V-Wing's underbelly? Or even better, does anyone have a model of the V-Wing? I've spent the last two hours looking for it. It's a very very bad time for SWMA to be out of commission.

Hmmm... well, we're both wrong (at least I was, you were more inaccurate than wrong...):   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
"The 'common' TIE fighter is the TIE/ln (can't tell if that's a capital 'i' or a lowercase 'L'), a successor to the earlier T.I.E. and TIE models, built by the company now called Seienar Fleet Systems."

Bloody V-Wing. Still haven't found a decent pic or model of it. Can't finish my model.

Maybe I should try a TIE Phantom or Defender... oh damn it, this time I'll search for decent pics before I start modeling  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
