Title: OpenGL problem
Post by: ado2102 on April 03, 2005, 06:38:12 am
So I've spent the last couple days dling a bunch of freespace 2 stuff:

Underdogs FS2 rip +
Media.vp files and .avis +
SCP's latest FS2_open files +
the FS1 port
etc.

So now I've got a pretty nifty fully loaded working copy of fs2 taking up about 2 gigs of my hard drive, which is nice.  However: OpenGL mode doesn't seem to be working properly.  This is bad because I have an ATI Radeon 9000 which apparently doesn't like the glowmaps in D3D so I want to try ogl... here're the symptoms:

Everything works fine in D3D.  It's a little slow on my machine when I put it into its highest performance modes, and it takes some time to load, but it's more or less solid.

When I try to switch to opengl.  From the launcher, I click Video tab, Graphics selector, Opengl.  When d3d is selected, three other selectors are available: adaptor, resolution, and antialiasing.  When I select opengl, all I get is "mode," the other two disappear.  I don't know if this is normal behavior.  Anyway, no matter what resoultion I pick, and no matter what general settings, or combination of graphics switches I make in the Features tab, when I start the game, this happens:

loads really, really fast.  everything works snappy up - music and sound, animations in bay, etc... but in flight mode a lot of stuff isn't rendering.  In the database, the following ships render properly, the rest are just white textureless models:

Ulysses (just lights)
Apollo
(hercules doesn't even show up as a model)
Pegasus
Athena
Artemis D.H.
Hermes
Alastor
Centaur
Chrondas
Trton
Zephyrus
Leviathon
Ganymede
Anubis
Ptah
Bakhta
Amun
Zejo
Nephthys
Scarab
Bast
Bes
VAC 5
Setekh
Kanak
Scorpion
Astaroth
Sharitan
Belios
Rahu
Frohis
Shivan Comm. Node
Moloch
Ravana (partial)
Satharas
Knossos

There are a few other partials also.  In flight there are no weapons extras, although the explosions look ok - I'm not familiar enough with the game to know exactly what's missing and what's not... but definitely stuff doesn't show up.  Other stuff does... the nebulas look great...

So, what's wrong with my opengl?

Thx

What build are you using?

IIRC OGL is kind of semi broken right now, so you might want to try a build from a bit back. If you're using any cellshading stuff you can write off OGL right away anyway.

The stuff in the launcher is normal, AFAIK.

FS_Open v. 3.6 (newest final version available?).  Would I know if I were using cellshading?

PS any recommendation on which older version I might try?

Hmmm. Couple of quick questions.

You're using HotU. Have you downloaded the standard FS2 vp files from the FTP (or elsewhere? )

The standard media VP files are

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp

They are NOT replaced by the media.vp files and are only partially represented by the contents of the Data folder.

3.6 is actually quite old. Hell 3.6.5 (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/) is pretty old now as the release of 3.6.6 is on its way.

You could try some recent build from the SCP website (http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.7)

BTW if you have mv_adveffects.vp installed and don't have a pretty powerful PC that's probably the cause of your slowdown right there.

If you use the 3.6.5 Media VP with 3.6 then you will lose textures.

Aha.  I was under the impression that I had dl'd matching exe, I must have gotten mixed up with all the dl'ing.  So, I installed the 3.6.5 exe and all the textures are there.  Problem solved... Why does that happen?

(Karajorma: yes, I've got all the FTP .vps as well, except for warble (server went offline for awhile) but i'm playing with the no music switch and it doesn't seem to be a problem even if I don't.  (Still want that music tho!))
