Anyone got a good suggestion for removing spyware without reinstalling Windoze and such?
The last day or so i'm starting to get popups that advertise spyware removal crap!!!!
Fecking annoying.
Must have hit a site yesterday that installed it, past my firewall and anti virus software....

Spybot Search and Destroy works quite well for this purpose.
-
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ -Spybot
http://www.lavasoft.com/ - Adaware
EDIT: I would recommend a clean install of Windows if possible, I did a few weeks ago and it runs like a dream...

I installed this last night, and updated it, but it didn't help...
I hate to have to reinstall windoze... friggin spyware....
-
Have you tried HijackThis?
-
Go to microsoft.com and download their anti-spyware (BETA) program
-
I might do that if it persists. Just installed Ad-Aware and it picked up some stuff that Spybot missed. Hopefully that fixed it. Thanks guys.
-
Think i found the site that did it, as my firewall picked it up this time....
-
You aren't using Internet Explorer are you?
-
If you are, it isn't good enough. Get the Maxthon shell, and enjoy the extras of firefox, without the crappy layout.
-
Crappy layout in Firefox? I'm really not sure what you could not like about it's layout. What, do you miss the random buttons that appear on your toolbar in IE from installing various apps?
-
I tried firefox... didn't like it too much, but i might go back to it after this annoyance...
-
I love Firefox...got the weather and media player controls right next to the URL bar.
I've had no spyware problems since I reinstalled XP and not touched IE.

What didn't you like...lots of it can be customized :D

Yay, Pro-Firefox! :D
Actual Story: "I always used to have troubles with IE when surfing the internet. But now that I have Firefox, I'm never going back!"
;)
"It's great, you'll never want another Internet Browser again!"
Firefox. Making internet browsing safer and more enjoyable, for you.

I'll give it another try...

Firefox 0.3 was very disappointing but I got back to it on version 0.7 and I've been with it ever since. Faster, more stable, and less susceptible to spyware than IE. A billion times better.

Ohh..
It must be a PC thing then, like viruses...

With that said, I enjoy Maxthon over Firefox, as many of the features in firefox dont work the way I like them. I have never used Firefox for a linux distro (which I'm sure it works well with), but on a Windows OS, Maxthon feels much more "natural" than firefox. No, I dont have annoying spam buttons on the toolbar, Maxthon blocks those out, and I can choose which I want installed. My favorites bar is also gone. This, as it is now, is how I like it. I know Firefox is good for a significant amount of users, but I like Maxthon... And you don't see me bashing Firefox as a ****pile of worthless garbage.
EDIT: That last sentence was not directed at you, IceFire, but the whole of the Firefox fanbase.

I'd add "Supports standards better" as a siginificant advantage in the mozilla browsers. I like to be able to view websites as they're meant to be seen and with the latest goodies.
CSS 3 is going to introduce automatic multi-column layouts. Very, very cool feature. Right now you have to do multi column using tricks with floats, not very fun.
If you go download a CVS nightly of Firefox you can already try out the CSS3 multi-column formatting (Example here: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/roc/archives/2005/03/gecko_18_for_we.html). The mozilla source also has support for rounded corners via CSS.
-
I just love tab browsing. I don't know or care if it's faster or safer, but the popup blocker rules, and the google bar is already where I want it, without moving it, and tab browsing is heavenly :D
EDIT: that was a bit off-topic. I always keep a version of Adaware SE and spybot:search and destroy handy, and run a check every few weeks - more if I'm looking for - ahem - hard to find items online. Any site that isn't professional and clean looking has the potential to carry/install spyware.

Yeah, clicking the buttons at the top of the screen is so much awesomer than clicking the buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Firefox is nice, but I won't be switching to it full-time until they fix the damn cursor rendering. It currently renders on top of the last pixel of the last character, making it almost impossible to read what you just typed under many circumstances.
The overloading of the scroll-wheel click functionality is annoying too. Center-click enters vertical panning mode, but if you happen do it over a hyperlink it also open it in a new tab. Gahh.

Actually, I love that feature. Much easier to use than right-click, open in tab.
As for tabs...you don't like them, you don't like them. Fair enuff. Personally, I think they're the bees knees, because they help stop the screen getting cluttered with multiple windows & mean you only need to minimise / maximise / resize once compared to the Ie loadsawindows approach. Of course, it's not like they force you to use tabs anyways.
All a matter of personal opinion, anyways. Of course, IE simply broke for me, so I didn't really need much persuasion to switch over.
-
Just curious, has anyone here actually tried using Maxthon for a browser? If not, you should. Just to see what it feels like. It requires some configuration before it will work like it should (read: default sucks), but I think it's a noteworthy browser. And I think it to be judged unfairly by so many people who havent even tried it, or dont even know what it is.

What the eff are you talking about?

Dude, you quoted my entire post. Could you be more specific on the point of your confusion?

Amazingly enough, I understood Zylon's post and even the point of it as well. I guess there's a first time for everything.
