Well, here's the pic:

ehh... to much forward beam weaponry! I want a ship that has the beams on te side, bacause when ships duel, they ride side by side, and flank eachother...
hey... gives me an idea... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Actually, that's not an accurate render. The main anti-capship weapons on this ship will be on the sides and on the top - that main beam will be a subspace disruption beam. You fire it on a node and it destabilizes it, rendering it unusable for some time.
The ship also has a wide-area version of it, that affects a few kilometers in radius, so no ship can leave or enter subspace while the field's active.
Much like the Interdictor Star Destroyer...

You may want to probably give us a better shot of the destroyer. I really cannot make out its shape.

Bah, you, you... bah.

Well, can you see it now?

Now I see it. Kind of like the design.

Eh... as nice as it looks, I'm tired of symmetrical ships... why don't any ships have something large on one side, and nothing like it on the other? I hate symmetry, it's boring... That's one reason I like the Mahes bomber, it's not symmetrical, vertically at least... i.e. x|x on most ships, x|y on the mahes (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
And yes, I do see that turrety thing on the side, but that doesn't count... still too symetrical

Human nature - we're symetrical in x|x , so we sometimes struggle to think differently. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
Also, I think that it has something to do with the fact that inertia would rip your ship apart if it wasn't symmetrical... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)
-
Why? You can't match mass on both sides without symmetry?

No friction in space ?! not sure on physics - I got a C in higher (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) .
-
Not nessecarily. Inertia is going to operate the same way on a ship wether its symmetrical or not, it just depends on wether the ship's structure is strong enough. Otherwise the ship would have to be perfectly radially symmetrical to avoid trouble. Look at the Colossus, for example. Its VERY assymetrical along the vertical axis, but can we realistically say that if we rotated it 90 degrees so that it was asymmetrical left to right instead of top to bottom that it would create more structural difficulty? Of course not.
The trick with an assymetrical ship is just to make sure that propulsive thrust is always aligned along the ships center of mass. Asymmetry creates problems when force is being applied to the structure off axis, because then it tends to apply rotational force instead of propulsion.
It is exactly right to say that we tend to find assymetrical objects less pleasing because we are symmetrical ourselves. However there isn't any structural reason why you can't make them that way, it just makes things a little more complicated.
-
Well, me being symmetrical or not, I prefer assymetrical ships. I love ships that are different than they should be... and when you plan it out right, like morris did, you can explain how they work...
-
Wow, I like it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I like this design. Snipes, it's all well and good to say that you like a less symmetrical ship, but don't bag out the modeller or the model for it. If you feel you have the right to do that, you had better make a better model yourself, or you'll just be hot air.
-
What, he isn't already? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
And symmetry is a good thing, so you have equivalent coverage on each side. Look at some of the modern vessels (such as the Aegis cruisers)
They're not actually symmetrical, but have the same crap (CIWS, radar, etc) on each side.
-
I never said anything bad about the model. The model is l33+ he did a great job, but I was just saying I want to see someone make a ship that is not symmetrical for once... And as for me making models... Do *cough*textured cubes*cough* count?
No? didn't think so (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Nice ship like the design
