is it possible to make a nebula less dense

We can't do anything about the nebula's density. But as for yourse-*moderators slay Blitz*
It would be nice if we could, though. Imagine, flying through a light fog...with seven Rakshasas blazing away.
-
Blitz... you're really not one to be talking about people's density. And anyway, yeah, while it'd be nice to have a setting for 'pea soup' nebulas alongside 'misty haze' nebulas, there isn't a way yet, AFAIK.

I can't think of any reason why not, other than that April Fool's joke. Thwacked me good, it did. Er, and it thwacked most of the hosted projects, too. Any admin who particpated in that thing has no right to speak of anyone else's density. :p
Nebula-wise, couldn't this be done by reducing the number of nebula poofs? Or would this just leave holes in the nebula?
Edit: Got an idea! Would it be possible to, on select nebula missions, replace the motion debris with large poofs, the density of which could easily be edited via a program such as Paint Shop Pro? Oh! And then, we convert them from 2D spirites to actual 3D models, creating a hyper-realistic nebula-enviroment!
And the RAM to support all this will be delivered via flying pigs!

Really? Dang. This steals the joy I got from that other thread in General Freespace.
Anyways, I'm gonna try out the method I listed in my previous post...wonder if I could do it.
Edit: Timewarp. This was a reply to
This wonderous and quite humbling post from Raa: *wasn't in on it, but never truly fell for it*

I totally bought for about 5 minutes then i realised what day it was and was overcome with skeptisism
but back to the nebula topic, what if the nebula pattern was made mostly with whatever color fs considers transparent
-
There isn't a "nebula pattern," there's just a bunch of 2d-poofs that fill the screen. I suppose we could modify the alpha-levels of the poofs, however.
-
what about the pattern setting right above the lightning settings. these patterns are located in the effects folder as pcx with names like nbackblue1

I think it shouldn't be too much trouble (again... I'm no coder, so that's my impression of it) to have a setting coded in that tells the game how far appart to draw the nebulae patterns. You could create a thinner nebula by adjusting this setting to something greater than default. Of course, the holy grail for nebula features the oft-requested volumetric fog/nebulae so that one can vary the nebula density within a mission environment. This would even allow nebulae that can be entered and exited within the mission environment. This is more like what Blitz was alluding to with his Rakshassa remark. This feature is something that'll require considerable work to code in properly. Especially to create an editor within FRED to do this, unless one is to use a 3D design program to map a nebula's shape and gap structures, then import that design into the mission in FRED.
