A great old one is better than a new mediocre one. I'm sick to death of FS2, I lost Morrowind and Bloodmoon, MOO3 scared the crap out of me, and now I'm bored. I've already tried the "go outside" thing, but the exposure to the sun scarred my skin forever. What can I play? I'd like open ended games like Morrowind, or a top-quality story driven action like FS2. Somebody should have an idea. Thanks :).

Hmm, oldie but goodie?
Here are two suggestions off the top of my head, both freeware:
Betrayal at Krondor (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=116) was the first RPG I played and still my favorite. It has an excellent story with terrific gameplay.
Or try Zork (http://www.csd.uwo.ca/~pete/Infocom/). One of the oldest adventure game series and still one of the best.

If you don't mind text-based games then Nethack (http://www.nethack.org) is a great game to play. It's a rogue-like text RPG, imagine turn-based diablo with ascii characters. There're some frontends that give prettier graphics to the game. It's playable online via telnet too. Check out NAO (http://alt.org/nethack).

Deus Ex...
-
For story-based games I would suggest the Baldur's gate series and Planescape: Torment.
-
Fallout 1 or 2
-
Day of the Tentacle
-
On that note: Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series (especially MI 3)

Forgotten Battles Gold Pack and Pacific Fighters...140 WWII aircraft in the best WWII simulator ever (its really fun). Don't let it scare you away...its more addictive than evercrack however so be affraid :D

KOTOR: A classic, just finished it not long ago.
Sacrifice is the best 3rd person RTS ever.
Arx Fatalis is an experience.
Hitman is also a nice if not A1 supar game.

Grim Fandango? No kidding! I was in 8th grade when i played that... it was brand new at the time... we're talking late 1999, maybe early 2000
-
Quake 2 or 3
JedI Knight I or 2
X-wing Alliance
-
Mechwarrior 3. The best 'mech game ever. :thepimp:
-
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Either of the fallout's is pretty open, as is Arcanum.
If you can find it, System Shock 2 is excellent.
Sacrifice is a load of fun, and probably dirt cheap if you can find it.
Chronicles of Riddick:EFBB is much more fun then any movie based game has a right to be.
Could always dig up a copy of MOO2 or even MOM if you think you can get it working.
And Homeworld is a lot of fun too.
-
Loved Grim Fandango, but I never could figure out what date or race was supposed to be on the counterfeit betting stub.
-
Diablo 1 and 2 always have a great replay value. Or Divine Divinity.
-
Although it's not old (2002), you could play Natural Selection, since it's free...
www.naturalselection.com
Its a mod for half life... and its fun.

An update...
I noticed a few old titles, most of which I enjoyed playing many years ago. However, they would not work well today, considering DOS doesn't work well with WinXP. Add that to the fact that Warcraft 3 ran too fast on my PII 450 and now I have an XP 2600+. When I said good old games are better than mediocre new games, I didn't mean to leave out some good quality new games. So poo on you :p.
And to respond to a few statements, yes I am tired of FS2. You will get tired of it too if you play it non-stop trying to create your own campaign and failing at every attempt. I have FB+Ace and I wish I could have hawt mansecks with it. Natural selection has a great gameplay idea, but the servers are all filled with stupid pubescant teenagers who love how '1337' they are. MechWarror 3 is indeed the best mech game ever, but it's too bad a decent one hasn't shown up since MS bought it out. I haven't tried any of the riddick games. What are they about? I might follow up on that.

Incidentally, can anyone tell me if Armed and Dangerous is worth £2? I saw it in a shop for that, wondering if it's worth a pop.

Yes it is. It has some of the best voice acting i´ve seen, and it made me laugh so hard it hurted. Very good stuff. The gameplay is a bit...uh, awkward. But good. Well worth the 2 pounds.

"System Shock 2" can be downloaded at HOTU.

Vietcong. Okay, so it's not old, but IMO it is the best FPS ever.

[color=66ff00]True but it seems Looking Glass is a bit miffed about that.
Oh and you pretty much can't play it on anything other than win98 as 2k and XP are problematic to say the least. Oh yeah, if you play it go get the texture and model upgrades and give zylonbane some kudos while you're at it as he's responsible for some of those nice addons.

I thought Looking Glass was dead?
If not, rather than *****ing they should just sodding re-release it on budget, rather than whining. Gits.

[color=66ff00]Too true, SS2 is hens teeth these days. Costs a bloody fortune if you do manage to find a copy too.
This is why I personally find their attitude to the game rather annoying. Oh yeah, saw a post by them or a representative of theirs on a SS2 forum, can't remember which one offhand though.

for old _OLD_ school SNES style shoot'em up space fighter game try this (http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~yosshin/my_works/)

Wow, all good suggestions... :D
I'd like to add Darwinia to that list 'tho - I can't think of a game so simple yet so complex... it's almost Tetris-like!
I just played the Psychonauts and that's pretty fun. Damned well should be since it was made by the same guy who was largely responsible for stuff like Day of the Tentacle ;)
However, there is a fairly strong 3D platformer element which may put people off. Basically, if you hate MDK, then you'll hate Psychonauts because they play *very* similarly.
The Warhammer game, Dawn of War is very good too, but the single-player mode is depressingly short.
If you're really stuck, get a SNES emulator and play ChronoTrigger - Best damned game Sqauresoft ever made IMHO.

and while we're on that subject... pretty much any game, particularly new, can be downloaded off any P2P utility... eMule, Bittorrent, Kazaa, ,etc. :)
just kidding!

You know, you've all just reminded me of a game called Archon, which was like Chess but more. I downloaded a version from HotU but we are talking Pre-Windows here, and XP no like one little bit. :(

Agreed Counter-Strike sucks. The only reason I plaly it is because it has bots, and I finished the campaigns in all my other games multiple times.
Anyway, on topic.
Download Americas Army v. 2.3. It's free and fun. Just don't forget it's a recruiting tool. ;)

That's not quite true sir.
I've played SS2 on my 2k and XP machine several times. (I own an original copy.)
All you need is the -lgntforce command line added to setup.exe when installing and all is fine AFAIK.

Same here, except my copy didn't need any tweaking to get it work. :D

Check around HOTU for Magic: The Gathering: Shandalar.
Once you get it properly slowed down, it's a hell of an experience.

Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising - IMHO the storyline is at the very least a step above the Freespace series. I'm actually halfway through replaying it myself. :)

  Whoa... I just played it and, wow... it's very oldschool but in a very awesome way. Play it. Now.

Emulate the SNES Starfox game :)
-
isn't that more of a pseudo-3d game?
