Title: Destiny of Peace? Anywhere?
Post by: Lukeskywalkie on April 08, 2005, 07:26:33 am
I absolutely adored that campaign when I had it - it had everything I liked in a campaign, even though it was a bit short. Is there a conversion for it anywhere, maybe using the FSPort or something? In fact, does anyone even remember it?

That was one of the best campaigns ever released for either Freespace. :D In fact, it made it onto the Silent Threat disk in its entirety.  (I consider it to be much better than the main ST campaign. :p) If you don't have Silent Threat, you can grab the voice-acted version here (http://archives.volitionwatch.com/fs1/missions/campaigns.php3?Cmp=The%20Destiny%20of%20Peace).  I believe that the FSPort site might have some data on converting FS1 missions to FS2.

I have ST. The story just...lost me. It's on the disk? really?

Edit: Oh CRAP! I don't have the disk any more. Ehh, just as well. I didn't want to install fs1 again. I might try my hand at converting it for the fs1port over the summer, though. I won't have time before then.

actually, the missions for the campaign are on the CD. I think what someone did was put those certain missions into one campaign...

Was Destiny of Peace the one about the colonization of the new planet? I can't remember; there was this awesome campaign I played where you blew up a ship called the Trinity... But I'm not sure what it was called.

Got it. They called me crazy for archiving every file I ever downloaded in my entire life. Heh, heh, the fools.

You must right click this link and use save target as to download it. Freewebs doesn't allow direct links.

Quickly! Grab it before the bandwidth is gone! I'll hold them off! GO! GO!

Yup. Every file. I even uploaded the voice files.

By the way, extract those files to data/voices/special. Not sure if it says in the readme.

yeah, every one of 'em into special...

i'd port it myself, but the importing FS1 missions just takes too damn long.

It isn't difficult at all. I ported the first mission of Destiny Of Peace. Took me like, seven minutes.

Loaded mission. Fixed a broken sexp. All ships worked correctly. Exported as FS2: Open file. Tested mission.

Done. You need the FS Port, otherwise it's impossible, of course.

Which version of FRED did you use?  I used Goob's latest version, and even the debug for the 3.6.5, but unfortunately then both lock up as soon as I commit to the conversion.  Perhaps the FS1 comverter is broken on new builds.

OK.  I'm getting successful conversions now, although it takes at least an hour per mission.  I basically decided to start one converting and go to sleep.  It was done in the morning, so I started another one and went to work.  Then I came home during lunch and started another.  When I got back from work, I started another one, and it completed about 20 minutes ago, so about an hour each.

[Edit]
OK, I've been looking through the missions to see how well the conversions went, but there are some thing that aren't right.  For example, the FS1 music tracks weren't retained, but I'm using the FS2/FS1 hybrid music table file for SCP, so I openned the original fsm file up un wordpad to tell what the in-game music track and briefing music should be, and then selected the corresponding ones in FRED.

Also, since the missions were originally designed to use the default loadout for most ships, I had to edit fighter and turret loadouts to match.  I also found an old FS1 ships table file so I could get the proper default loadout for fighters (where custom selections hadn't been made by the mission designer).

What is also missing is any background, since they originally used those crappy FS1 swath nebulae.  It also uses no special suns, just default.  I'm thinking the best thing would be to port over the campaign completely, then get someone like BR to go though and set up the missions with Lightspeed's hi-quality nebulae, and set up some suns.  It could also use planets too.

Later!

This is where you use the "Import weapon loadouts" option.  Select the FS1 ships.tbl and it should do it for you. :)

Probably.  I need to write a new string replace function.

I might also have to clean some of the missions up in terms of sexp cleanliness.  Open up M7 and take a look at the formula for the primary objective.  Try wrapping your head around that one.  There are likely (I haven't looked though all the missions yet with this in mind) man missions in need of some FS2 or even FSO sexps to improve their efficiency somewhat.
