Title: In the continuing tradition of SCP glory shots...
Post by: StratComm on April 12, 2005, 05:20:35 pm
I hereby start the next media VP splash screen suggestion thread.  Never too early to get things started.  This was posted at Sectorgame and the SCP alternate forums while the boards were being restored, so I'm bringing it here.

I've talked to Phreak about the beam clipping (and the regulars at sectorgame have suggested temporary workarounds) so this isn't the final version.  But I think it works nicely even with the clipping beam.

It would be cool if you could get the explosion on the other side too if the beam is supposed to pass through the ship. . . though beams tend to only pierce through once a ship is toast  I think.

You need another Moloch firing at someone in the background, IMO.

I also need that explosion on the near side of the ship, and the turrets on the Deimos pointing at the Moloch.  I have most of that set up, but figured this is close for now.  I'll get something worked out for the blast before I re-take it, as it takes too long to get the composition right (the timing has to be perfect - the beam takes the Deimos into its deathroll and I don't want explosions all over the hull).  This is why I wanted a good shot of the box art; the CD is too cluttered and is half-whited out, and I don't have the box handy.

The white bit of the beam is too thin for me.  Nice shot Stratt

(Yes I said it at Sectorgame, but if I say it here I will have a larger audience)

I suggest using my beams (members.shaw.ca/FireCrack/weapons.tbl), that shot is exactly waht i modeled it after (and i tried to do a scene like this but i suck with fred)

see, personally, I like more contrast in my lighting. And perhaps the background could be less dense.

Wait, what am I saying? Stratt, that looks GREAT. With some postprocessing it would be fine as-is.

for the turrets: you can modify the weapons to have longer ranges so the turrets will engage the moloch.

You can also do a ship-guardian so the deimos will become invincible at 1% hull so it doesn't die.

I actually want the Deimos to die, so that the beam pierces it.  As for the turrets, the Moloch is technically in range of the weapons mounted on them, but out of their firing arcs.  I'm using the animation code and special tables right now and have them looking right.

By the way, that Deimos is missing 4 Turrets. ;)

Looks great.

My only suggestion would be to use Lightspeed's red nebula as the background, but still, its awesome.

the beam will pierce the ship if it is likely to be destroyed in 1.5 seconds (going by hp < dmg * (1500/170))

What about darkening the rest of the shot? If I recall the box art correctly, it was waaaaaaay darker than what you have there.

It looks like retail FS2 to me. no specular highlights, no reflection mapping, no noticable luminance maps, and the lighting is flat looking. best to just get a new screenshot.

Interesting.  There must have been several variations on a theme with the box, because all the art I've seen is brighter.  That's good to see though, gives me some ideas as to where to improve the screenshot.

Well, I did find some brighter artwork myself; but that piccy is consistent with the UK box/manual (not the SSOY edition), and also the box artwork on the budget double pack.

Actually, the manual seems much darker IMO.

Well, I have the CD double case, the shot looks great, but the things I noticed where that the Deimos is darker, and had much much larger guns than the in-game model had. That said, awesome shot! I don't even want to think how much work it took to get everything to behave ;)

It also has GTD Deimos painted on the side and turrets on the vertical axis.......

Do you have that in desktop size, Strat?
Title: In the continuing tradition of SCP glory shots...
Post by: StratComm on April 14, 2005, 06:39:59 pm
If by desktop size you mean 1600x1200, then sort of.  That's the resolution the screenshot was taken at, but I cropped it instead of resizing.  The desktop version would contain more empty space.

I was thinking 1024x768, actually. Oh well.

And Firefox wouldn't lie to me...would it? :nervous:

It is indeed 1024x768.  Cropped specifically to be so.  It's supposed to be the 1024x768 mode splash screen for the media VP eventually, so I made it the right size.

Though most people run their monitors at one of the 1280 settings these days.

Remember the IExplorer tries to be helpful by scaling down images to fit the browsing window, that might be why it looked smaller than it's actual size ;)

I really resized it specifically for that purpose; I run Windows at 1280x1028, and games at 1600x1200, so the specific size of 1024x768 is particularly useless for me.

That's the fourth version of that same picture that I've seen.

Interesting side note: apparently THQ made the Incredibles game for (IIRC) Xbox. I wonder if any of our :V: friends worked on it?

Strange thing is, my one has significantly fewer laser shots in the forergound... or is a lot darker still, but that IS the case to the double CD, not the original BOX, which I don't have any more.

Edit ; Never mind, the CD case shot is actually slightly zoomed-in ;)
