Title: Post-mission design checklist?
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on April 12, 2005, 05:25:08 pm
Does anyone have a checklist they use to ensure that a said mission is complete? Maybe building one will be helpful for new FREDers, in an effort to help ensure more polished missions. I would also be interested to see if there's something I'm missing personally.
Here's a couple points that could be on said list:

-run all text through a word processor program for spelling/grammar.
-ensure a "jump out too soon" debriefing.
-playtest on all mission-relevant skill levels (if there are varying skill levels in place)

I was thinking of making up a checklist myself to help me make sure I don't forget to do something on any one particular mission. Of course, each mission is can be very different so you'll have to test each mission with its own set of rules in mind, but I think there's a need particularly for me to build up such a list.

One can never btw emphasise enough playtesting. There was one mission I had played quite a few times, and I thought it worked pretty well but then when I played it on a harder skill level I noticed that there were a few missions where I was lucky to scrape out at 1% hull. Turns out I accidently guardianed myself. I learned a few other things about the mission as well . . . its sometimes difficult to playtest a mission when you know exactly what's going to happen (especially in heavily-laden story missions).

Have you seen the checklist in the FRED2 help file?

FRED helpfile? What's that? (just kidding)
But no, don't think I've look at it. I'll have to go check it out.

EDIT - actually where is it? I can't find it :)

It's the thing that comes up when you go to the FRED help option.

Hm.  Maybe it's not in the freddocs directory.

It would be better if you could save the ticks in the checklist...

I tried to mention the reference guide last night but just as I went to post HLP went down to fix the permissions :)

The reference guide is something every FREDder should have a copy of. It's just too useful :D

Indeed, and while some stuff is close to obsolete with the SCP (The old nebs, placing jumpnodes etc.) there's still a lot of useful data on there. Perhaps a modified version could be made available with all major releases of FREDOpen?

I think I already have written something about this topic in the Wiki. Let me check. If there is a need, I will help you expand your list. I feel like writing in the weekend. I am going to have a lot of time.

Of course, provided you need help. ;)

Sounds like a good idea. I don't have the faintest clue how to make a windows .chm file though.

There's tools for converting HTML files to CHM.
