Title: Anyway to manually bind keys? (Carl?)
Post by: Jeryko on April 16, 2005, 02:05:54 pm
In a thread a created a few weeks ago, Carl said that he had bound 'www.freespace2.com' to a key so he wouldn't have to keep typing it ingame.

Anyone know how he did it?

It's rather annoying having to keep typing it.

Thanks!

I did it to a button on my joystick. the logitech wingman profiler lets you assign keystrokes to buttons. i don't know how to do keyboards though.

/me wants to re-assign the pause key to the "SysRq" key instead of Fn+F11 ...

If you have a logitech mouse with multiple buttons do a google search for Logigamer.  I believe he has something that will do stuff with keyboards as well.  I dunno for sure.

Doesn't that double as printscreen though?

That would be (in theory) the alt-pause effect interactive pause state thing... For me to enable that, i have to press Alt-Fn-F11, and if by some mishap i press Fn-Alt-F11, i usually get the start menu to open...

The SysRq key by definition is to allow code to be run directly through kernel or somethingorother... Since i don't know how to run much code anyway, nor do i want to access kernel, its this annnoyingly useless button right between PrtScrn and Insert (and to the right of that is delete, home, page up, and page down... Not bad for ETS)...

Uh, why not assign it to the 'Pause' key?

And SysRq is also the printscreen key, yes.

Buh, see, Pause is a function of F11, and SysRq is its own seperate key, the exact opposite of many traditional PS/2 keyboards I've seen, but it is expected, because this is a lapotp keyboard...

*sigh*

Maybe i'll just scan my computer for good measure... :nervous: (www.woodentoyandgift.com/files/keyboard.JPG)

Well that's not typical.  Shoot.  Um, why do laptop keyboards not have to conform to any sort of standard?  I understand that they have fewer buttons, but there is absolutely no need for printscr and sysrq to be different physical keys.

what I wanna know is why they can't use the design of desktop keyboards. it's just plain screwy.

Because they have fewer keys, Cobra.  Keyboard space is at a premium on a laptop.  Anything not between 'esc' and the lower right contol key don't have a home in the space alloted to the keyboard on a laptop, and so the absolutely vital keys like del, home, end, page up/down, and the printscreen key get placed in any spare space that can be squeezed in.  Forget the numpad.  A lot of this is resolved by use of a fn key that doubly-maps certain keys, obviously.

The question is and will remain, why, with the premium already being asked for each key, did something as rarely (read: never) used as SysRq ever get its own key when it doesn't even get one on a full keyboard.

Exactly. I'm blessed wih the 21 key number pad, which is great for when i want to test something but don't need to test balancing, and so i don't hook up my joystick, and thanksfilly Scroll Lock, Pause, and Break are the ONLY keyboard buttons designated to as Fn... Hell, there's enough dead space between the top of the keyboard and the screen hinges for 2 more rows of normal sized buttons easily... Its mighty annoying imho...
