What a surprise, right? Anyway, what I need to know is how to create my own missions with custom ship models. Specifically, I'm using Trek ships. I have all the ships working ingame(tried the included ones, and they work perfectly. Sovereign>Deimos), but I can't make my own... I'd reeeeeally like to be able to fly around stuff like the Galaxy class, and watch a Galaxy fight with a Bird of Prey. So... anybody?

do you have the tbl files for the ships and weapons? good. put them in your table directory. put the model and texture (ani included) in the respectful folders. Now, open up FRED. Look in the drop-down ship list to find the Galaxy (or whatever) and go to town.

not really all THAT hard to figure out, man.

Cobra, you post questions nearly every day asking for help for this or that, for getting the SCP working, for help with bugs, etc.  Often you post several times back-to-back, correcting yourself and asking new questions.  Don't act so condescending.

i usually find the answer to my problems after i finish. :nervous:

Ah, thank you. Unfortunately, I'm on the crapshakes computer right now, so I can't try anything... thanks for letting me know, though.

I couldn't find how to actually put your new ships into the game. Could you please give me a step by step tutorial in putting one in there?

The ships aren't mine. The FAQ is :)

First question is what exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to add the ships from the star trek mod to the game and then FRED a mission with them in?

Adding a ship is a three step process really.

1) Make the new ships model in pof format. (If you're using a mod this part should have been taken care of for you). If you want to use ships not in the mod already you'll have to make them yourself or wait for someone like Omniscaper or Robo Getter G to get around to them. If you want to try your hand at making your own ships click on the link to my FAQ below but this time go to the modding section.

2) Edit the ships.tbl and weapons.tbl so that freespace knows how to use the model. (The Star Trek mod may or may not have done this for you. I'm not certain because I've never tried it). If the table files aren't done for you again you have to wait or learn to table edit yoursefl. It's not a hard skill to learn. This tutorial (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/fsurp/help/ge/vptut.html) will give you all the help you need to get started.

3) Make a new mission using the new model or edit an existing one to use it. For that bit you need the link to the FRED section of my FAQ that Goober gave you earlier.

Ahh, I understand now. Of course, the point is moot because I just figured out how to do it from Cobra's explanation. Thanks anyway... But while you're here, could you point me in the direction of a tutorial in making ships use beams?

Basically you use the beam-free-all SEXP or simply tick the button in FRED2_Open's mission specs.

My advice. Do the walkthrough that comes with FRED. (It's in my downloads section if you don't already have it for some reason). If you didn't know how to turn on beams then there's a whole load of stuff in there that you absolutely need to learn how to do.

Eh, you're probably right. I'm not into serious mission making, though; I just like watching ships fight.

Making ships fight?  Go and download Battletest from the HLP Missions and Campaigns page (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/hlp/category_show.php?cat=42)  then change the ships to whatever you want.

That page should really be separated into missions, and campaigns.
