Title: Testers call!
Post by: WMCoolmon on April 17, 2005, 03:24:26 am
Inq's got the forum set up, we just need to solve some permission glitches before people can start joining up. So, if you're interested in testing stuff, register on scp.indiegames.us and post here (If your username on indiegames is different, post that too.)

If any mods want to maintain a presence in the forum, PM me with someone to serve as a liaison. (I don't care if it's a project head or someone who's already a tester, I want to know who has the mod's blessing to request a particular emphasis be put on feature X or bug Y ;) )

Hmm, what happened to everyone interested in this when it came up ~ a month or two ago? I've only got one PM offer; build stability isn't going to significantly change if that's all the interested parties there are.

We've tried to start tester lists many times in the past, and they've never worked.  I doubt it'll work this time, either. :sigh:

Yeah, I was hoping this time would be different since people started applying in the thread where I was just theorizing about it. ;)

I suppose they may have simply gotten other commitments or lost interest - I'd rather have one tester than a team of a dozen testers who didn't do anything, after all.

I was actually giving this thread some thought :). I've decided to opt in then :D

This is a community effort ;)

For all those who say "I'd love to help, but I can't code/FRED/compile" this is a really good place to actually help ;)

This is primarily the reason I haven't applied, I posted in that thread you made on this subject a while back expressing interest, but now most of my free time goes into Point of Existence (http://www.pointofexistence.com) (modification for Battlefield Vietnam) and Battlefield Central, as well as managing some other forums, I just don't play as often as I used to.
I would not apply for a position if I did not think I could properly fulfill all of the requirements.

What exactly would this entail?  Would it require any moderate to advanced skills?  If not, I'd be happy to fool around with new builds. :)

I'd be overjoyed to sacrifice the stability of my computer to aid the community!

Really. I've got nearly seven years of experience playing Fs2.

When can I start?

It's pretty much "as much as you can". The idea is to be more selective and thorough than normal use, and I'm hoping that we'll be able to 'harden' some sections of FS2. As an example, the first project I have planned is to go through ships.tbl and make sure everything there is working properly, trying out some absurd or unusual values and seeing if it causes FS2 to bomb.

Depending on how that goes, the next project will be to get multiplayer a little more stable.

If you don't have any modding experience at all, just trying out specific features and saying "WFM" can also be handy; or switching on the FPS display and reporting the results.

So if you don't have any modding experience, that's fine. I think it'd actually be a pretty good way to learn, since if you make a mistake, FS2 should at least give you an idea of what's wrong if you put in a bad value or something. If it just crashes, then an extra warning or error should be added. I've found that if I don't know what's going on, I usually notice more bugs than people who have been modding for years. :D

Right now I'm just waiting on Inquisitor to contact me about getting forum permissions set up.

Sounds good; I just registered at the SCP site..  The SCP has given me a lot of enjoyment; it would be nice to give something back in whatever small way I'm able. :)

I can test.

Tolwyn, Xelion, and Mongoose have been granted access to the testers forum on the SCP site. Everyone else who's interested, please register so I can add you. (I'll try to watch the members list for people, it'd be helpful if you posted once you register so I can make sure I get you. :) )

I would test if I wasn't so afraid that my computer would melt because of a bug. :nervous: I kind of need this thing.

I want to help you, too. I have been playing around with FSopen but I never did something useful for SCP ;) Here it's the possibility to do this without knowing how to code.

Alright, what the hell. Sign me up. I've got some free time at the moment.

krisvek and Admiral MS, you should be able to see & post in the forum now.

Ethershock, you need to register at the SCP site (http://scp.indiegames.us) so I can add you to the testing group there. :)

You know, as much as I tend to bang on/against bugs while I'm making mods, I should probably be listed as "tester" too.  It's one more forum to keep track of, but I'll manage that well enough.

EDIT: That was fast ;)

Cobra, I've added you, but keep in mind that I would like testers to be fairly independent as far as determining how to do stuff and whether something is actually a bug or not.

Strat, I've added you too, but I would like some participation as well. ;)

I'm not sure I understood that.

I mean you need to either be pretty proficient with Freespace 2 in general, or be willing to find the answers on your own...if you end up having to ask for help on HLP, so be it, I just don't want six threads popping up asking how to do something in order to test something else. :)

Well, I can try to find the problems, but i'm not sure how to find answers to fix the problems, since i have no experience with coding.

This is testing experimental SCP features? if so i should be widely availabel except for this week and the next (AP exams) and the final bit before provincials.

Also, i do have coding abilities, though not to the level of some of you crasy SCP coders i'd consider them "decent".

If you can be more specific i'l think about it.

1) Learn what a metaphor is.  That's not a metaphor.

2) Stop spamming.  That goes for both Cobra and FireCrack.  If this keeps up I'll monkey both of you, and Cobra... you're hovering awfully close to a spam ban.  Knock it off.
