Title: Volition Watch
Post by: cannon_fodder on April 17, 2005, 05:50:50 am
I went to go visit Volition Watch and I got this

volitionwatch.com

This domain name expired on 04/10/2005 and is pending renewal or deletion.

It was bad enough that they stopped updating sometime ago, now I think I just saw the end of an era....

Volitionwatch has closed down long ago. The staff and projects have migrated here. HLP is the last big HUB for freespace.

Now is an end of an era?

Try a year ago.

Thing is it looks like only the domain name is gone. If anyone knows the IP address of the telefragged server hosting the site you could probably still get in.

Um.. so what´s about the archives now?

Closed. The archives have been shut down. On this very day.

I was browsing the misc. files section, hit refresh, and the site was gone.

Crap.

I will renew it as soon as network solutions deletes it from their database and i can host the domain elsewhere.

I just noticed it too :(

I know the site hadn't been update in, well, ages, but it's still a bit of a shock that it's now totally gone :(

Man, all the cool FS stuff I got from that place... definitely the end of an era :(

Didn't you guys wonder why the B5 project suddenly relocated here?

Are the plans still in place to relocate the contents of the Archives to HLP?
Title: Volition Watch
Post by: Unknown Target on April 18, 2005, 02:55:41 pm
It'd be nice for historicle purposes, but to be honest, there was little of anything particularly large on the Archives.

Is there some other place that Bob's PCS tutorial can be found?

I didn't mean the site; I meant all of the missions, campaigns, and miscellaneous mods.  There was also a great hosted site, Tech Freespace, which had, among other things, full descriptions of the origin of ship names of all the FS1/2 ships.  I'm assuming that'll be on the Internet Archive, at least.

Rumor has it, that the Archives somehow became corrupted, so mass backups weren't feaseable, and even the VW Alumni for some reason couldn't access them from the FTP...

Don't worry about the Archives. They should be restored in the future.

Yeah.. we don't actually own the domain, Telefragged does.. so when the time comes around every year, they don't have automatic renew on it, I guess.. so it takes them a couple of days to renew it. It's renewed now again, though... so at least another year of VolitionWatch's existence for archival purposes.

The situation is this: everything is still on the servers... everything. One problem: they changed the logins a long time ago and contact with Telefragged is sketchy. We've tried to get in contact with them on a few occasions to get stuff back for archival purpose, but to no avail. So as it stands: everything's still there, but we don't have access to our own site anymore.

That's really ironic.

Now is the time for an0n to hack telefragged, steal the data we need, and save the community! But wait, we banned an0n! He hates HLP.

And he hates me.

And most of the people I know.

Dang, that's even more ironic.

So who was this an0n? and what made him so distinct as to get banned and the object of so much 'affection?'

And i apologize in advance for being an ignorant noob who is slow to catch on to such matters.

an0n was a particularly wild forumer we had on HLP awhile ago. He got himself banned for poor conduct, and that was the last of it. He's not the nicest person on earth, but he's not as bad as his reputation states he is.

He hosts a forum known as "PenguinBomb."

http://nodewar.penguinbomb.com/forum/

Having actually blamed him for hacking me when he really did nothing, I've decided that I should be smacked. With a rock. A sharp rock.

Which part? The "not as bad" aspect, or the bannation aspect? I'm assuming you at least agree with the "rock" aspect?

If I remember correctly, he dissed the NTV project by refering to them all as a collective "urinal" in their own forum, and then the other admins finally decided to ban him. Not smooth.

Dunno how he managed to steal so many staff threads, but at least I can use this one as a visual aid. This is the actual thread in which the admins decided to ban him.

//Oh no you don't. That does not get linked to here.

It appears that omeone renewed the VW domain name before I could, it appears that telefragged did it...

@icefire,
If you need webspace for a new place to put the VW archives, I have more than enough so just let me know...

Speaking of the archives, can I submit a FS1-mission to there? I just made a one and thought if, for once, I would actually release it (so you could rip it to pieces). Or where else could I upload my mission?

Hm.. a quick note on this.
Someone should re-new the archives so we can have up-to-date missions (SCP) and a review-staff for it.

er, no one plays the actual FS1 unless that's all they have, we play the FSPort now. ;)

Don't make assumptions like that unless you're prepared for the flaming to come.

FS1 has an atmosphere and a feel to it that the port can never duplicate.

I play FS1 original, and the only way the Port is getting on my system, is if I go raving-lunatic mad and kill fifteen people in the neighbourhood. The Port will be on my to-do list then.

Nothing wrong with the port, it's just that I enjoy my nice original FS1.

You'd be wrong there, Cobra. :p I'm sure that there are still quite a few people who play FS1.  I do myself, if for nothing else than to play campaigns that haven't been ported to FS2.  Plus, there's something satisfying about seeing that huge, green HUD again. :)

Supposedly the script is fully automatic, so feel free to submit something.  When I tried it though, it didn't work.

HLP 2.0 has a mod and mission submission feature too, but it's a bit trickier to use.  It's on our list of stuff to improve, though.
