This is also partly related to Freespace modding, but I guess it applies to other modelling stuff, so I'll ask it here...move it if you see fit (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Anyway.. I've been using Lithunwrap to try and make some nice new shiny textures. the original cobfile I used only gave me a horrible single tiny cube as a Uv map space / template. Or with other models, a horribly complicated mush of stuff (faces) :angry:
So I tried converting to Wavefront .obj format (amongst others) with 3d exploration, loaded up and -bingo- the UV mapping was of the side, front, top / bottom faces etc - very useful for me (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). Obviously still some problems with faces being covered by the same part of the map, but never mind.
anyway, i was wondering what's the best way to get this file to save in a properly mapped Cob file i can convert? Any help would be nice, thanks.
[EDIT]
Don't suppose there's a program to actually take pre-exisitng mapped models, create a new image file ala above, and allow you to edit it? (some chance, but here's hoping)

(BUMP)Got one working wi/ Lithunwrap;
Just figured out the answer to my q - save as 3ds Max, convert to cob with 3dEx. Now, if only I could rotate it properly.....

Don't suppose anyone knows of a way to stop the uv maps being 'squashed'?

theres a plugin for 3dsmax called texporter that does just that.
i would assume other packages have simillar utils/plugs tho.
