Title: Which keys are the most unused in FS2?
Post by: Dark RevenantX on April 21, 2005, 12:37:27 pm
For a campaign project I am doing that involves you piloting a Capship, I need some uncommon keys for the beam/turret targetting and firing.  Since player capships use engine ,and for some reason weapons energy, I need to get some uncommon keys for the commanding of the capship.  The help/home/pageup/del/end/pagedown keys are already used by the capship for engines and weapons, so I can't use them.

SELECT THE KEYS THAT YOU LACK OR ALMOST LACK AN ASSIGNMENT FOR!

MODERATORS, MAKE THIS POLL MULTI-CHOICE IF IT ISN'T ALREADY

You can't use 5-0 AFAIK.

I'd suggest using Insert, del etc (The ETS keys) as they are useless for capships.

Not anymore!  I have found a way to make player capships work, provided that the mission is also built well.  You can't just stick a fenris into SURRENDER, BELSARIUS and make it the player ship.  You have to make the odds against you, meaning you have to be selective on which ships you shoot with which beams and how often.  You'll notice that in the mission where you eventually get to a pair of Fenrisi, the Hatsephut destroyer doesn't use its main beams on them, as it would be a waste of energy.  Well, this is not exactly like that, but it is similar.  You could be in a situation where you are in an Aeolus, and in front of you is a Cain with such little health that it is sparking.  You could use both frontal beams on it and destroy it easily, or you could select only one beam to fire at the Cain, and leave the other on standby incase another enemy cruiser jumps in.  The Aeolus' SGreens recharge in a whopping 45 seconds, which leaves you mostly a sitting duck if you expend all your beams at once.

You can select to fire induvidual beams at induvidual targets, or select beams to be on standby, not firing at anything.  You can also select to fire groups of the same types of turrets and AAA beams at induvidual targets, or have them fire at all targets within range.  I am sure that I could add more obtions that do not have to do with weapons, like killing the engines to increase the firing rate of your turrets.

Well, the ETS keys on a mac are help, home, page up, delete, end, and page down.  The capships DO use engine power, its just that the AI doesn't use it.

I think NH meant because as soon as you start getting damaged with more than the 6 (?) subsystems that the ship status can display, you get an immediate CTD...

- is used for the throttle

= is used for the throttle

* is essential for exterior views

` is for cheats, but not all keyboards have them...

, and . ... are you kidding me?

; hm... this one might not be used...

' is for radar range

/ is for secondary weapons

\ is full speed

[ and ] are essential for throttle

5-0 aren't bindable

I got CTDs with more than 6 subs with a certain cmd line that I forgot.  If done right, though, it will not crash you.

Five through zero are bindable! They have to be, because I use 7, 8, 9, and 0 for throttle! (A habit from Mechwarrior I picked up.)

Very odd on my part, Hippo.  I got 15 damaged subs but no crash.  Note, this is in a 3.5.6 version, before my PC exploded.

my mistake, they're bindable in game, but not detectable in FRED right now, and last i checked (albeit quite long ago), typing in a key in fred didn't work, as it needed to be selected from the list...

wasn't going to use them either way.  Is there an explanation for having no CTD with 15 subs on the screen?  I need a way to tell people how to replicate it!
