Seems he opened the shute too soon, and was thrown out of the cabin, and into the tail wings. Maybe the shute was poorly packed, who knows?

Begs the question though, what the hell kind of pilot flys anywhere near the folk that just jumped out?  I mean, you'd think it'd be SOP for the Jump Plane to just keep flying on a steady course for a specified period of time and/or told to return.

I don´t think the pilot flew into them, the skydiver just got blown out of the cabin because his chute opened ahead of time. The air displacement threw him into the tail wing, and cutted his legs.
The pilot had nothing to do with this. Pilots stick to the course, while the skydivers jump out.
As a rule of thumb, you do NOT open your chute immediatelly after you jump the plane. You wait at least a couple of seconds. Notice how the airborn troop´s parachutes are opened by a strap some 20 feet long, attached to the plane and the cord, so that the chute opens well after the plane goes by.
This guy was just unlucky. His shute opened while he was still hanging out the door. Maybe he pulled the cord too soon, or the cord  got stuck in some part of the cabin, or maybe the shute just blew open because of the air pressure. No one will know what really happened now.
But skydivers know there is always a risk in jumping out from a perfectlly working airplane. Nowadays, skydiving is a very safe sport. It´s very rare that such accidents happen. Usually most accidents happen because the jumper lands on some tree, or some rooftop. Parachutes very rarely fail. And even if your main chute fails, you still have the "lolipop", the reserve chute.

The thing is, he was hit at 600 feet. So unless I'm mistaken - and I'm not an expert - there's no way he would have jumped out of a plane at such a low altitude. It's far more likely that he jumped at a considerable height and got hit when the plane circled back around to land or something.

the collision occured at 600 feet so the skydiver had been in the air awhile before the plane had hit him. parachutes require between 1000-4000 feet to open. fighter pilots during ww2 wouldnt like to take a dogfight too low because it would mean certain death to bail out below 4000 feet. modern parachutes can open alot faster but still you want to jump at as high an altitude as possible. the plane would typically fly to the drop sight and then return to the airport. the drop site was probibly poorly selected, most likely too close to the airport or along the landing aproach vector.

Yeah. That's what I took issue with. That plane had no business being close enough to hit the guy at 600 feet. Either that plane was in the wrong place or they choose a dreadful landing site.

If that´s true, then the pilot must have been drunk or something... Think about it, he had to be flying high, like 5.000feet  to drop the skydivers. Then not only he doubles back smack on the course the skydivers are at, but he even drops to 600ft?!?
That guy shouldn´t be driving a lawn mower, much less flying a plane.
:wtf:

Maybe the plane was still climbing altitude when his chute activated?
So it wasn't the pilot at all, just something that happened on the climb.

Maybe the guy was skydiving out of one of those zero-g planes... you know, the ones that dive at high speed to simulate zero-g?

If he was a cinematographer, perhaps he was trying to get film of the plane?

Either way....ouch.  Not a nice way to go.......

DELAND, Fla. (AP) A skydiving cinematographer was killed after his legs were severed in a midair collision with the airplane he had jumped from, authorities said.

Albert ''Gus'' Wing III had already deployed his parachute Saturday when he struck the left wing of the DHC-6 Twin Otter propeller plane at about 600 feet, a witness on the ground told police.

I did a 5000ft jump once, the plane is supposed to be absolutely no-where near the landing zone until the last skydiver has touched down for exactly this reason. All I can assume is that the plane was touching down, but if so, whoever plotted the flight and jump paths should be shot, or at least have his legs amputated.

isnt the jump door behind the wing and well below the horizontal stabiliser. none the less only a fool would jump from a plane at 600 feet.

you said "none the less only a fool would jump from a plane at 600 feet."... thereby implying that he was a fool to jump from the plane at 600 ft.

if that's not what you meant, then you should've rephrased it better

DeLand Florida? When I had that job at the skydiving place in High School, we used to ship things to them all the time.
