Next up - mandatory chastity belts!

[q]One of the co-authors of the bill, Republican Corbin Van Arsdale, said many parents want restrictions because they go to Friday night games to see young men clashing on the football field, not girls shaking their behinds on the sidelines.[/q]

Really?  Ask the dads........me, I always thought the one saving grace of American sports was the semi-naked cheerleading routine.

True, considering American sports by themselves are boring, and for the most part, stupid.

But let's not get into that.

I'm glad someone is finally trying to ban the glorified stripper routine at least in schools (I don't give a **** about pro-football though). That's just whoring around for an extra curricular (sp?) activity.

Its just some Americans being over conscientious about the showing of skin.  I mean, tons of violence is ok...but the human body is not.

Lets go back to the victorian era...oh no...an ankle!  That CANNOT be seen in public!!!

C´mon, is anyone surprised by this? I´m not! Not after the flak Janet Jackson got just for showing a niple! It´s McArthiism all over again.

This guy sounds a bit gayish, don´t you think?
"I want to see male bodies, not cheerleader bodies! Ban them, kill them, get those ugly things out of my sight!!"
:blah:
Sounds a lot like ancient Greece, where only men were allowed in the games, and any woman caught sneaking in was thrown off a cliff. But then again, most athletes conducted homossexual practices back then, so maybe that´s what this guy is shooting for...

Somebody should ask this jerk what are people supposed to watch when the teams aren´t playing for shiit! Cheeleaders save a lot of people from demanding a ticket refund, when the team sucks that day.
We don´t have a cheerleader culture over here, to our disfortune.
Cheerleaders is one of the few things i´d like to see the US export to my country.
You can export the girsl, but for the love of God, don´t export  him! You can keep him.

This doesn't represent a return to a 50s-style attitude; in fact, the 50s weren't exactly as innocent as everyone today makes them out to be. :p I honestly really don't have a major problem with this law.  We're not talking about professional cheerleaders here, or even at the college level; we're talking about middle and high school girls that are 13 or 14 years old.  I can honestly say that, if I were a father, I'd have some qualms about letting my daughter perform some of the dance routines that I've seen.  There's already enough hedonism and sex in the media; do we want to be teaching our children that dancing like they're in a rap video is something that should be encouraged?  Keep the Cowgirls, but lose the Britney wannabes. :p

I totally agree with Mongoose.  In addition though, I find it disgusting that grown adults who probably write the routines for these girls, make them do what they do.  I mean yeah, "sex sells" but they've got nothing to sell!  I wonder sometimes, if they think a cheerleader team that dances way more risque than they should would give thier football team an advantage, thinking they can distract the other team with some bumpin and grindin.
It's just way too risque for my taste.

Seriously, though, I know that people enjoy being horny.  That doesn't equate to a need to shove sex in people's faces everywhere they go, or anytime they turn on a television.  Let people looking for it find it on their own terms, and keep it out of everyone else's faces.  I'm sure that some of you here are parents; wouldn't you like to see at least a minimum amount of standards with regards to sexuality?

Evolution, vyper?  Check my position in the other thread. :p

I'm not opposed in the least to scantily-clad cheerleaders, so long as they're out of high school. :p Granted, I wasn't exactly opposed to high school cheerleaders when I was in high school, but I do agree that some of these schools take things a little too far.

I just don't understand why we have to go make laws every time we find things objectionable. People think high school cheerleading goes too far? Fine, I respect their sensibilites despite my disagreement. But why does it all have to become state and federal legislation? Can't people discuss these issues on the local level, and allow policies to be set from one institution to another? We do still have town governments.

Community Standards and "Standards of Decency?"
I believe most if any sort of homsexual activity in the state of Utah is declared illegal for ovbious reasons.  I dunno if that's at the govt level or state and community standards level though for sure.

I dont see the need for brand new laws being put into effect over this either, but there's GOT to be some sorts of decency standard to adhere to.

I do get horny as hell all the time (that's one of the reasons why I love spring so much), no need for you to worry about that. :o But, I just don't find cheerleaders to be interesting. They break the pacing of the game. ;) And don't take everything I say so seriously, I frequently have mood swings, but that still doesn't change the fact that cheerleaders suck. But you can keep 'em for all I care. :p

These started bothering me, so I just want to clear this up. I don't find women attractive at any levels. I VERY ****ing MUCH prefer my own gender. Therefore is there something wrong with my hormones, am I not "manly" anymore? Fine, it was a joke, but still... :doubt:

I stand corrected.  Lawrence v. Texas invalidated laws declaring homosexual activity criminal, at least in the state of Texas.
Marriages are still prohibited though, according to Utah state code.

Besides, cheerleaders really dont do it for me.  Sure, they may look pretty, but the high school marching band is where it's at.  Takes a girl with brains to play a  musical instrument while marching - that's hot.

:nervous:

I've been in the marching band for all four years, and I have to say it really doesn't do anything for me in that respect, or in any respect, come to think of it. The ridiculous uniforms....

Now, granted, our cheerleaders aren't much to speak of either.

It was only a joke. If anything, the smiley face at the end of the post should have hinted you to that.
As for you not finding women atractive, that´s another issue.
Would you rather have male cheerleaders? If there were, would that change your opinion wether cheerleaders should be banned? Or do you just think the one gender should be?
As an example, i don´t like watching men when i go to the beach. Does that mean i have a reasonable basis to have them banned from the beaches? I don´t like fat women wearing bikinis. Should i get them banned from wearing a bikini? Obviously not. If anything, i can just change beach. Just like people who don´t like cheeleaders can change channel, or simply look away.
Also, keep in mind that democracies are ruled by the wishes of a majority, on just about anything. And since male homossexuals (and other non cheerleader lovers) are a minority in the US, you can´t expect the wishes or grievences of a minority to take precedence over the majority.
Let´s face it, most males like to watch cheerleaders dance. Even if some parents don´t want their daughter doing it, they don´t complain about watching someone else´s daughter.
It´s like the only time they complain about it is when it hits too close to home. The rest of the time they are pretty much content in watching and feeling just as horny as the next man.

Oh yeah, of course. But I wouldn't be able to shake the feeling that other parents might think the same thing... and that our daughters would go ahead and do it, despite our instruction. I guess it's not just the fact that there's the option there - which can and should be justly refused - but that it also sets up expectations for everyone else. It's all very tangled, I think.

I don't see the need for cheerleaders, male or female, I'd want men to compete completely nude, like in ancient Greece. :D

Hmm... I guess there's a second issue if she simply likes doing it; for the cameraderie, or something (I have no idea; I live in a country pretty much devoid of such things, thanks to our entertaining sports).
