Can’t tell you how we got our hands on this image, but what you’re looking at is a real live shot of the Xbox 360 that someone sneakily snapped with their cameraphone at Microsoft’s Xbox360 Revealed launch party in Los Angeles last night. Also note the presence of a hard drive attachment up top, the white controller, the Xbox Live headset, and what looks like that EyeToy-like camera peripheral we’ve been hearing about.
From Engadget.
My take:
+ Wireless controllers: check
+ Web cam: check
+ Not to shabby looking, the other pic was real, but it was a VERY uglifying shot...
- AGH!!! I want chrome, not white foo's!
-
For all the money they had, I would have thought they could come up wth something better looking than that. Hell, a first year college design student could do better.
Or maybe it's just me.
-
Thats just....ugly.
-
It seems to me like that looked at Apples iPod and tried to make an designer icon out of their console to follow suit.
That said, it's not that bad... certainly an improvement over the first X Box. I will say one thing though, that controller looks even bigger than the first one... certainly wide.
I think it'd look quite snazzy sitting by a TV set though. They could've done better but then they could've done a lot worse!
-
it's not that good looking.
-
Engadget also got a shot of the new dvd/media remote.
Microsoft must have been dreaming if they thought they could hold a launch party for the Xbox 360 last night and somehow stop us from getting our hands on photos of every last piece of hardware that was there. We already scored a live shot of the console, along with its controller, now courtesy of another attendee we now know what the Xbox 360’s DVD player/Media Center remote control is going to look like.
I'm betting it ships with the 360...
WOO! Remote power button!!! No more getting up to turn off the machine!!!
-
yeah, I've heard that mod is the most common one on the xbox...
-

It would look MUCH better in chrome...
However, it is supposed to be able to take music from USB sources, so it may really compliment your iPod...
Plus it is supposed to have custom cases you can get.
-
Heck, all that white space... I imagine it won't be long before people go to town with spray paints on it ;)
-
Hehe...
Latest challenge reward from ourcolony.net seems to suggest that it will have interchangable power button plates...
-
oh, that's just what I've always wanted.
-
Hmmm, apparently it actually is brushed metal and that picture it just pretty crappy at showing it...
-
One more pro:
Looks to be pretty small, using the cd tray as a reference.
-
:eek2: That is the uglyest game console I've ever seen! The old Atari looks better than that.
-
Looks like a Mac G5 (?) case. Which, oddly enough, so did the devkits (except they were in G5 cases....).
Doesn't strike me as visually appealing. Of course, the PS2 is/was ugly as sin, and absolutely dominated the market, so it's not going to be a major concern for most IMO.
i am, however, struggling to think of a succesful white consumer electronics 'living room' (i.e. not iPods, Gameboys, etc) product.....
-
I hope to dear god that it really is chrome...
And yes, the PS2 looks like a mini apartment complex...
Heh, Gamespot already has sites devoted to both the PS3 and "X360..."
-
I'm not impressed.
-
oh my f***ing god that is ugly! That looks worse than a smashed PS2!
-
The controller looks ugly as hell, the console and controllers should either be black with a hint of green or Just Chrome. As DeepBlue pointed out they're either using massive CDs or have a small conole.
-
Just for contrast, here's the new PS2 they're planning to release in a few weeks.
-
It uses dvds like the first one.
A can of spraypaint will fix any visual problems IF it is white and not chrome...
-
There is of course the possibility that this is a cunning mis-information campaign by Microsoft, to throw people off the real track. There seems to be too many leaked pictures for such a tightly guarded secret,

Mmm chrome...
That's supposedly the color the Xbox 360 should be...
I personally am going to wait until May 12 when the MTV reveal airs before I make any decisions.

I can only pray that you're partly right.

They released that last year in the UK.

A...can...of....spraypaint.
So how many people spray-paint their TV or Hi-Fi nowadays? Must be some fad I've missed out on.

Nah, Rictor means the slimline version; AFAIK we've only seen the black version of that.

Uh... what's new in this one? I mean... I have one sitting next to me that looks just like it - and I do mean identical.

High-quality spraypaint mind you, the stuff that actually bonds and becomes part of the surface you apply it to.
-
Hardly anyone will do that. They'll buy it and complain that it sucks until MS makes a new version.
-
Lazy slackers... :p
-
eh? I'm not going to spray paint an expensive piece of electronics because it's fugly. To do so properly, I'd have to remove the casing, and in doing so, I'd void my warranty, which is the last thing I'd have to cling to when it dies on me.
-
Well, that's what the guy on street corner told me, I only assumed he was well informed, what with his charming disposition and all that. Still, it's looks damn nice.

What, at the colouring-in department of MS R&D?
There's is not a snowballs chance in hell of people spraypainting electronics equipment like a console; if the appearance matters that much to them, they'll shift to buying something more attractive. 'sides which, that thing probably has a load of vents, ports, gaps, etc which could get clogged if spraypainted.
-
That might not be a web cam on the Xbox 360. It could just be the wireless reciever...
Looks more like a computer than ever now. :p
-
 at grug.
That IS the wireless reciever, look to the bottom right of the console... there is the webcam.
-
The pictures keep popping up...
This time it's a close up of the controller:
The leaked Xbox 360 pics keep on coming this afternoon. The latest is a close up shot of the new console’s controller that gives us a good look at that little silvery thing in the middle, which besides sporting the Xbox 360’s logo, is also supposed to be some new kind of button or something or other (if we knew exactly what it was we’d tell you).
My take:
+ WOO! Built-in headphone jack!!! Excellent!
+ Cool orb thingee, probably for selecting rf for multiple controllers.
- Ugh, this pretty much confirms that the X360 is by default white. HOWEVER, hopefully there will be custom cases available.
- Why, oh why did they stick the black and white buttons on as shoulder buttons...
Another tidbit of information:
Apparently, the Xbox 360 comes with built in wireless networking.
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
-
Too many 'leaks' for me to take that seriously.
It's fugly. And looks uncomfortable.
I doubt that's a headphone jack, since it's in the centre. It looks more like it could be some sort of charger plug or something equally stupid that you'd need with a wireless controller.
Did I mention I dislike wireless controllers? I'd hate for the controller's batts to die on me in the middle of a fragfest. And I know they would, because my wireless mouse's batteries would die on me in the middle of working on a model that I was into at the moment.
Without fail.
-
You are actually right. That "headphone jack" is actually a usb adapter plug-in.

Since it is USB compatible I bet that wired controllers will be available.
-
Which means I won't have to do any wire splicing to get it to work on my PC! Joy!
-
You like to use gamepads on your PC???
And yes, it already has been announced that the controller will be compatible with Longhorn.
-
I use the current XB controller on my PC.
-
Another option with that usb adapter is it could essentially turn your wireless controller into a wired one.
One more thing:
Perfect Dark Zero Details.
(May 6, 2005) -- Word from a little birdy who had a chance to play Perfect Dark Zero at an MTV Event. Though our source was under some non-disclosure limitations, he agreed to reveal some of the details to us under the condition of anonymity. As a result, we learned a number of different details about the sequel and Xbox 360 Launch title. Perfect Dark Zero can be best summed up as combination of Counter Strike's team-based gameplay and Splinter Cell's spy/stealth features. At Joanna's disposal will be over 22 weapons, including the return of the remote Laptop gun as well as a new invisibility gun. New to the Perfect Dark universe are personal teleporters, jetpacks, and a slew of spy gadgets. The graphics do not look like the early concept renders of Joanna, but rather realistic graphics that land somewhere in between Half-Life and Halo. Apparently the reps at the event also scanned in the entire body of one the other lucky attendees and put them in the game. Our source wasn't able to tell us with absolute certainty that this feature would available to anyone in the final game, so it could end up being a similiar case to that of the Gameboy Camera and Perfect Dark on the N64. However, we have heard pretty concrete rumors that the Xbox 360 will come with a USB camera for use on Xbox Live, so this may very well be a final production feature. Look for this MTV Event to be televised this Thursday at 9:30pm, at where else, MTV or alternatively on CTV in Canada.

Doesn't everyone want wireless controllers?
I guess everyone just wants to rebel against microsoft. :p "Package wireless controllers!? Hah! I'll turn mine into a wired one, so I CAN'T use it from across the room."
-
Gah, more and more stuff!
Someone PS'd the X360 into a real world situation.
-
I probably won't get the new X-Box regardless; if I even bother shelling out the cash for one of the next-generation consoles, it'll probably be the PS3. I still have to pick up a GameCube well before that, though. :p
-
Looks pretty small in that latest shot. Then again, anything is small compared to the original Xbox.
-
Hey, that's France3 on TV :p
Well I like it but I would have prefered it black. Matter of taste I suppose. Where are the black and white buttons? Triggers? That would be cool.
-
nice photoshop job. :) (you can see a white line along that speaker)
-
why doesnt anyone make a console that fits seemlessly in everyones a/v cabnet or rack. crap like standing it on end so it can be kicked over by little brothers and the family cat. a top loading cd tray so that you can never stack anything on top of the unit. why are people so insistant on letting the design queers strip away any shred of utilitarianisim from every product ever made for the sake of mindless asthetics. damn you all to hell!

I painted my Gameboy, it started out purple though, so it's sort of a different situation?
I don't really like this new xbox, personally. It looks like a really cheap home computer(like something you would buy for kids), especially when you stand it up like that. And what's up with the name? It doesn't make any sense.
Anyway. what I would really like to see in terms of console design are new consoles with wood-grain casing, and maybe make the controllers aluminum or something(to match). It would totally be the coolest thing ever, although it wouldn't match very well with newer TVs and sound systems.

Poor choice of words on my part. That thing by the bottom right of the console is what I was referring too. It may not be a webcam at all, it could just be a wireless reciever.
I for one don't really like the idea of a webcam hooked to live all the time, if it was so I'd probably leave it unplugged when not in use.
The news that Perfect Dark is not going to be a cell shaded game is very much appreciated by me. That would of lost the whole gothic like theme of the game, and quite frankly the cell shaded Zelda looked sucky too.
Laptop gun = ownage. :D
I am greatly hoping they include bots in the new one as they did the original. :)
Spam the Dark-sim wars! :D
A PD bot enabled, graphics enhanced, Live enabled game is very appealing to me.
"You won't shoot me, foolish child" *pop in head*
Lol, I'll never forget that line. :p

Only thing about wireless controllers is a) batteries and b) response time. The latter is/should be easy to fix, the former threatens to be a real pain in tits (especially if the batteries/cell are heavy).
Albeit I don't ever remember seeing the GC wireless controller ('Wavebird' IIRC) in the shops over here, so it's probably not a killer app (or it's costly).
-
The Wavebirds are the nicest wireless controllers I've seen, certainly far better than my Pelican PS2 controllers. I'd actually prefer it if the controllers were heavier; I like a controller that has some weight to it. That's why I like the PS1 controllers far better than the PS2 ones; they feel heavier, and they don't break immediately if you smash them into the ground while playing Madden, like the PS2 one did. :p
-
Wavebirds work just find. So do the Logitech wireless controllers.
BTW, the X360 can stand vertically or horizontally.
-
Some more news, this time concerning that x logo button on the controller as well as some DVD stuff:
The Xbox 360 controller used at the event was wireless and on the controller had an Xbox Live button which when pushed, an Xbox Live menu pops up on the screen with various options. Text messaging is also integrated this time around with the usual voice communication. A DVD burner with TIVO “like” capabilities is also said to be incorporated. Although, we’ll have to see about a DVD burner---seems very interesting.
Mmmm... TiVo.
