It appears that every so often someone comes up with another beautiful HTL ship that causes much gawking and slobbering. This thread will poke fun at that honored tradition. As people here strive to make more and more awesome HTL ships, hopefully this thread will induce a few laughs and make every serious HTL ship look that much better.
So the idea for this thread is to create the ugliest ship you can conceive of, a lump of spacefaring metal that is terrifying to friend and foe alike. If people are interested, I'll post some rules and guidelines.
Edit:
"I was thinking instead of posting early versions of ships (too easy), we should make the meshes for this from scratch. Nothing complicated, maybe 30~60 minutes of low-poly work."
-
you have seen my Onuris model right?
-
How about the GTD Cube? :p
(And if anyone posts the Colossus, I will be seriously angered. I will never, for the life of me, understand why that ship takes so much flak from so many people. Really big gun-shaped ships kick ass. :p)
-
Whabouthis?
-
Or this?
-
@Topace :
I think your last one has some potentiell, just give it a little more smoothing and greebling.
But when talking about ugly, how is that ?

One of my earliest creation in TS 3, was supposed to be a terran comm-relay station. :wtf: :nervous:

Search for the topic "Utility Freighter".

...
I don't want to work on it anymore. I have no talent for modelling.
-
Kie: Just what I was thinking :D
-
Poor Cobra. That thread was just about to think into forgetting, but people still remind the others that such thread existed.
Honour Cobra that he dared post that model. Post your own work, instead of pointing at others' jobs, saying that is the worst you have ever seen.

One of several variations on a hull concept for a strike cruiser I'm toying with.
Bear in mind, you're looking at it from the upper front.
The only successful thing about this model was the turrets, but they're too high-poly for FS use...yet, anyways.
-
@Bobboau: is the Onuris on the forum?
I was thinking instead of posting early versions of ships (too easy), we should make the meshes for this from scratch. Nothing complicated, maybe 30~60 minutes of low-poly work.
Here's a pre-texture example:

Aptly named, I'm repulsed alright ;)

wow this thread is becoming a joke. Sorry Raa

Someone should revise this to make use of Bob's animation code, if you know what I mean.;7
-
That isn't the ugliest ship ever; it's the most kickass. :p
-
:wtf: who made that?

the Onuris
a well constructed, yet extreemly ugly monstrosity, looks like a plucked mutant turkey. but it's that beutiful sort of ugly, it looks like what it was meant to look like, a big fat heavy thing.
-
I don't make ugly ships,:p. Except, this one, but this one isn't my design.

I don't see a problem with the model. Maybe if I saw a larger picture, I would be able to tell you more about it. :p

Could be a useful model for a Vasudan destroyer. I suppose you didn't texture it.
[EDIT] Sorry for the double post, it was not intentional.
-
@Bobboau :
I don't think that your model fit into this thread here. Actually I think it looks kinda interesting, and properly textured it could be useful, I still keeping my eyes open for some good ancient-designs, and this could be really a good ancient-destroyer.
It is hard to find a good special style (terran = blocky, vasudan =smooth and somewhat auqatic, shivan = bug-like, ancient = ??? )
(BTW, did you model it out of the shivan-frigate that was embedded in one of aldos-modeldump ? The nose reminds me of it, or a romulan warbird too. Somehow it combines attributes of many ships :) )
-
I think that if there was an FS3, the destroyer Bob posted would be the new primary destroyer of the Terran fleet. I know its said that terran = blocky, but if you look at the progression of Terran destroyers from FS1 (Orion) to FS2 (Hecate), you can see a general move towards more rounded and borderline-semi-organic look. The bits sticking out, particularily around the engines, make it look just mechanical enough to still be Terran. This is an FS3-era Hecate.
-
Don't get my post wrong, I'm not really the opinion that blocky ships are a bad thing at all :) I was just pointing out that there is some ancient style missing, and I hoped for gathering some ideas from you guys ;)
But of course you have a point, that the FS2 ships where a little more smooth compared to FS 1, but I will also never forget when I saw the GTC Orff the first time, watching their cool engine-glow (for that time back) and listen to the humming engine sounds.
Ahh, the memories :)
-
LOL I see someone dug up the FingeroDoom ;)
It was WMCoolmans idea! Blame him!
*runs ;)
-
That thing needs a BFRed right on top. Talk about really flipping the bird :p

Even when you try to fail, you succeed. Bastard.
That thing actually looks pretty badass.
-
Romulan Warbird meets Hatshepsut, with a huge ass to boot ;)
I always did like that design, though I imagine it'd be a total pain to texture.
-
Actually, Bob, I'm thinking that'd kick ass. Just texture that sucker and give it a campaign.
As for it's origins: yeah, the evolution of the Terran/Vasudan joint destroyer.. maybe with some Ancient technology from the Knossos thingies?
-
wow, I must have done my job right, it was suposed to be a mainline heavy destroyer for an FS3 type campain that Icefire and I were at one point planning on doing after BWO, it was suposed to take place about 80 years after FS2 and this was going to be the peak of GTVA technology. the terran and vasudan fleets had merged and it was an absolute hybrd, designated the GTVD Onuris.
if you look the name up some sites refer to it as a greek god, others an egyption one, others still the greek form of an egyption god, so even the name is an absolute mergeing of the two
and as many of you have guessed, the stumbleing block for it was the textures, I was only ever able to make one texture I realy liked for it
(http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=546653)
that went along the neck(s) and the sides (along were the shadeing is a little blocky) as you can see (if you look between the seams) I was trying to imply the incorporation of Shivan technology
-
Damn, man... that'd be cool as hell. The engines would obviously be Terran textures, judging from the shape. Meh. Oh well, wrong topic for discussion... Methinks this doesn't belong in this topic, because that's a badass ship.
-
yes the plucked mutant turkey is not ugly enough :D
-
Hey there!
Here's my first model ever. I guess it's technically a work in progress, but everything I try to do to it makes it look uglier. As it is, I think it would fit in pretty well in the original Star Fox!

It's true, it is. But my attempt to put it in-game as a sort of easter egg just made people's computers crash :p

That actually looks pretty good, if it was smoother in-game (I've no idea how that works, but I think it would). Maybe you can contribute it to the modpack.
-
Interesting model, that Onuris is, yes. It sure looks organic to me and with some proper texturing it would be great.
-
bob, your model kicks ass. it would look a million times better if it was textured though.
the uglyest ship i have is the rumrunner
(http://server3.uploadit.org/files/nukebomb-screen00.jpg)
but it falls in the 'designed it as ugly but it accidently came out cool' class. :D
