Title: How do you make shields on fighters?
Post by: Kurayami on May 09, 2005, 04:30:24 am
I hate for my first post to be a newbie question, but here goes..

How does one actually make the shields on the fighters?

What are you converting with/from (model format)?

For cobs, you create an object representing the shield geometry.  Glue a light to it, and name the pair 'shield'; then glue to the main LOD.

Similar process for the max->pof converter, except you don't need the light (just link a shield object to the hull IIRC)

I've tried that, however in-game, the shield just is not there, all the information is there, there is just no shield whatsoever

Um....

Does the wireframe show up in modelview, firstly?  (i.e. make sure it's scaled and centred ok)

If so, could the normals be inverted (I'm not sure if this can have an effect or not)?

What do you mean by the information being there but the shield not?

By information I mean the shield information on the table.

Oh, right; well, make sure your shield mesh is visible in the actual pof for one thing; sometimes these things get screwed up upon converting due to seemingly innocous stuff like gluing order... the game will accept shield info in the tbl even if the model doesn't actually have a shield to calculate collisions against.

A much easier way to deal with shielding ships is to use modelview to import the mesh from another similar shaped model, Then you increase or decrease it's 3 dimensions to fit better... For some people it can save a lot of hassle (like me!) but you dont get the "custom look" some people like (like a toal skin shield that follows every nook and cranny of the outer hull exactly).

Thanks guys, it helps, but are there supposed to be 'holes' in the shield?

I tried the bubble shield idea since I thought it would grant me the best coverage, it could be just that I'm using relatively weak shields, but sometimes the energy weapons hit the hull rather than the shields...

Omni made a very nice bubble shield for cap ships. Import it off the Bird of Prey. As for your'Holes" I dont know about that. When weapons do enough damage they can bypass the shield.

I happened to be at the perfect angle to see the ISS Wraith strike the Galaxy's shield then about 1 sec later it blew through the shield and hit the hull (as other phasers and torpedos struck it also and depleted the shield energy at that moment while the weapon was still active.)

Hope that helps... You can change that in FRED I believe (Beams do pierce shields) but non piercing I think is the defualt setting now.
