Title: Need help with Pof conversion and glow points
Post by: DaBrain on May 12, 2005, 06:05:06 am
Well, I tried to add these glowpoints to the street lights, but whatever I do, the are always misplaced. Also I want them stick to one direction, so... How do I do this? I don't want them to rotate along with the player. :(

set type to 1 and set the normal to where the bottom of the effect bitmap should be realitive to the top. also they get rendered left side of the bitmap to glowpoint, right side to normal

Ok, I set the type to 1, but now the glows disapeared. :(

What did I do wrong?

did you set a normal? set the normal long or you will get a really short beam

ok, put the glow point right beneath the light source. type one, radius to a reasonable size, 3-4 maybey, im gonna assume your light is about 15 meters high, so you would want to set your normal. to something like 0'-8'0. also remember to rotate your bitmap 90 degrees counter clockwise from the way you show in in your piccy. il look at your model later when i have more time.

i got the light to show up in game but im having some trouble getting the thing to destroy and look destroyed. im trying to make the light post a subsystem so that it will be destroyed leaving the broken part as live debrits.i get a ctd when i try to destroy the thing. i dont think freespace likes that the model has no physical hull. i might just put a smal cube inside the post that you wont see so that freespace doesnt crash. im gonna mess around with the grouping some more later after work.

Thanks, Nuke. You are a big help. :)

I'm really bad at this stuff, so any advice is useful.

well i got it to destroy without crashing the game, but it still wont recognize the physical subsystem i put in there. it might be the tbm im using to test it.

by the way how big to you want this thing, its 20 meters as of now, but i can scale it if you want. i have to redo the smoothing, the 3ds format kinda lost that data. truespace doesnt seem to have good 3ds import/export code.

Errr… :nervous:

I didn’t think about making the RLight a destroyable object when I modeled it or, I would have given it much more for debris. The Rlight_destroyed was meant to be an independantly set model in Fred to create a certain “feel” for a certain mission. ;)

Anyway, thanks for your help with it.

i assumed you wanted them destroyable and to leave a piece of dibrits behind. so i assumed you wanted a destroyable subobject. my idea was to give the light an absurdly high number of hitpoints and the submodel an absurdly low percentage so that it could be destroyed with a couple shots leaving a nearly indistructable shard of pipe sticking out of the ground. il play with it some more tomorrow and then send back the stuff i changed/added. right now its sleepy time :D

*adds Nuke to 'special thanks'*

I think actually both ways might be useful. So we can place some destructable lights and some already destroyed ones.

I'm sorry for beeing inactive so much in the last time. I had to study more for my last exam than I thought. :(

Well, I'm over with it tomorrow. ^^

Actually, I think we can just go with the one light then have them set to already destroyed in Fred when the mission starts.

Nuke: I like your idea.

unfortunately no matter how hard i try i cant get the damn subsystem to work. ive used physical subsystems before but i dont know what im doing wrong. im gonna throw in the glowpoint really quick and upload it to my chunk of webspace on game warden.it will at least give you something to work with.

*edit*

just when i was about to give up, i accidently fixed the thing. i had to tweak the glowpoints to make them look right. now theres still that bug in fs open that makles glowpoints look kinda off center. but it works.  you can just extract this to your freespace folder and run it as a mod if you want.

no need, i have more effects bitmaps than i know what to do with, and my textures are usually masterpieces.
