Title: Multiplayer Question
Post by: DeepSpace9er on May 12, 2005, 06:38:00 pm
I just convinced a friend of mine to get FS2. We want to play multiplayer, but since PXO is dead, we have been trying to connect via direct IP. We arent sure exactly how to go about this so that one of us can host and the other can see. DOes anybody have a procedue of exactly what to do to accomplish this?

Man, I've never tried anything like that before. What does it mention about this in the manual? A Google search wasn't too optimistic, either... :nervous:

Hope you get something worked out. Networks continue to puzzle me... things just seem to be broken as I try a myriad of options, and all I can ever do to get things working seems to be randomly try connection settings and plug things in and out over and over again. Sorry, I'm just complaining about my ineptitude. :)

Try this utility called BattleLAN that was made for Warcraft III.  http://www.infoceptor.com/files/warcraft3.shtml
I would assume that it will allow you to connect in Freespace as well.  I would be interested to know if it does...

EDIT - I would also assume that once you connect via BattleLAN, you connect in-game via the LAN option...

Ill give it a try, however the readme suggests that it was designed for Starcraft, warcraft 3. It seems like a simple program though, and may work. Ill tell you what happens...

Probably didn't work because FS2 doesn't use LAN/Internet connections the way others do.  You could always use Kali, if all else fails.  ;)

And btw, BattleLAN states that it works for other games besides just Starcraft/Warcraft.  I hope you didn't try LANcraft on that page...

Nope i tried battleLAN and it didnt work. However, i tried this other program hamachi and it seems to work perfectly. You just have to enter in the IP address of the person you want to connect with in the field. Just make sure you trust who you are connecting with before using it.

Hmmmm. Looks like a good FAQ entry here :D You don't need to use  other programs to run an IP game at all.

How can I play FS2 Online?

PXO was the way to play Freespace 1 & 2 online for many years but it has now been taken down meaning that there is no way to play the retail versions of Freespace online unless you know the IP addresses of people playing a game. Fortunately FS2_Open can be played online and this is now becoming the version people use when playing online.
All recent versions of FS2_open support multiplayer but many people prefer to use Tom's Old Build. This is a version of FS2 Open which basically consists of the original FS2 source with the new multiplayer code added. As such it has less of the SCP changes. This has typically resulted in a more stable, bug free build. The drawback is of course that none of FS2_Open's other new features will work meaning that the game will look exactly like the retail version of FS2. A guide on how to get online with Tom's old build can be found on Game Warden (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267).
Other people like the eye candy that FS2_Open gives them. In addition when multiplayer missions come out using the new features of FS2_Open the old build won't be able to play them. If you want to play using a newer build the SCP Website (http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugins/custompages/fs2netdguide.php) has a guide on what to do.

I don't want to use FS2_Open / I want to play on a LAN

All versions of freespace support IP play. To play an IP game follow these simple steps.

[LIST=1]

a) On win9x. Start>Run>Type WinIpcfg into the box and press okay. Note down the IP address.
b) On Win2k\XP Start>Run>Type cmd to open a command prompt. Type IPconfig.

I tried that first.. i might have been that the other person was on a router with a firewall. It might be useful to include the port number in the FAQ Q/A.
