Ah, but your task is not yet at an end!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)  Your list doesn't include both the common and Bayer designations for each star. I think this is important, because Freespace uses a mix of the two.

For example, Alpha Centauri is also known as Rigel Kentaurus, Adhara == Epsilon Canis Majoris, Mirfak == Alpha Persei, Beta Aquilae == Alshain, etc...

I assume you already have this site ("http://einstein.stcloudstate.edu/Dome/constellns/alphalist.html") bookmarked.

Ribos...that name sounds familiar.  Ohh yeah!  It was that planet in "The Last Starfighter"!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Actually, I believe Ribos can be traced back to Star Trek as the likely origin.  Of course, I could be wrong.

Son of a... and I made it into a vital Sol system! I don't have time to change all the Antares references... was it populated in the game?

Populated?  Likely it was the front line during most of the 14 Year War!

Isn't Vega a relatively young system? I thought it was supposed to be a star surrounded by a nebulae. Ive heard something about it before, cant remember many details

I read somewhere that Vega is NOT surrounded by a nebula but by a disc of dust and gas, probably the start of the creation of planets around the star.

I got my source from a book about space.

If it's a cloud, it probably is what's left of the nebula it came from. Protoplanetary discs are - well - discs.

Oh yeah, you don't mind if I put this in the encyclopedia too, do you E? You will definaetly be credited for them - right at the top of the document where everyone will see your name.

Sorry to bump such an old topic, but I figured I might have a couple of snippets of info that may have slight relevance to the topic at hand.

Ribos actually originates from Dr Who, a planet involved in the search for something called the Key to Time (do a websearch for further information) - someone at Volition was probably a fan.

Ikeya is the name of an astronomer, Kaoru Ikeya. Probably most notable for comet hunting (http://www.cosmiverse.com/space03220204.html) - again someone making the game might've come across it in their information gathering and decided to use it. Either that, or Ikeya hasn't discovered this star yet ;)

As far as I can tell, the other two (along with these examples) don't exist. However, there's still plenty of space, even local space, to be searched, and given that there are a couple of hundred years until this fictional universe springs into existance, there's not really anything to stop anyone from keeping these stars fictional.

I read somewhere that the real Capella is a binary star.

This looks like a great collection of information, but it seems that FS/FS2 does not follow these stellar attributes very closely. (i.e. Capella)

Capella is a double binary system with two pairs of stars. The two big stars are both yellow giants (about 70 million miles apart).

The other pair are both red dwarfs and are further out from the two main stars than pluto is from sol.
At that kind of distance you might even need a jump node to get there.

Maybe the other stars were destroyed/used up by the ancients?
Title: The Stars of Freespace
Post by: Kazashi on May 30, 2002, 08:32:39 am
Remember that the Ancients haven't been around for thousands of years, and those other stars existed at least 42 years ago.

The 2 red dwarves orbit at a distance of 0.17ly from the G-class pair, if anyone wants that information. Not a small distance, and would most likely be invisible from close in to Capella (as well as difficult to get to without a jump node, unless they're still within the initial gravitational/subspace envelope of the main Capella binary). Guess that leaves only the binary pair to sort out. Maybe we can fanwank something about one star being behind the other. With a 104 day orbital period it might just be workable ;)

I shall now ressurrect an argument I had with many people on the VBB, whether it is called Mirfax or Mirfak, however, I can't remember which side I was on, so without further ado...

IT'S MIRFAX!!!
