1) it looks like the xbox 360 might be my first console purchase of all time.
2)The playstation 3 looks very nice too
3) What is this "Quake wars"
-
WHE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!1111
thery're neat lookin'.
-
Quake Wars is, from what I understand, a full stand-alone multiplayer game based on the Quake 4 engine (Doom 3) and set in the Quake universe. It's made by Brain Damage, the guys who made the free expansion of Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
This is to Quake 4 what the Unreal Tournament series is to Unreal.

And most of them have propably been Photoshopped and/or graphics bumped up for the screenshots. I don't doubt they will look good, but I'm always skeptical of publicity shots.

2006: year of the Eyecandy

Yes but consoles do not have the hardware variety that PC's have, so all console games should look the same on all consoles of same type, safe for differences in TV or monitor quality. Photoshopped maybe, but dunno if console games will even have graphics or audio quality settings.

I meant the graphics may be bumped up by the developers. For all we now, the fps might be less than 10.

i still prefer my CRT screen to a TV :)

well, given how the high definition TV's are increasing in their number, that might improve the quality marginally.. still, it's nice to know what these consoles are capable of.

Are you sure Formula 3 isn't real? :D I actually thought it was!
Anyway, half those Xbox games are for the PC as well, and that "Gears of War" is just using the UT3 engine (and from the second screenshot, it looks like the same models, too).
-
If it ain't Halo 3... but I don't think we'll be seeing that for a while. I wonder if Bungie is even going to be the ones developing it... *gasp*
-
Gears of War looks f-ing stunning but as people have said it really does look rather pre-rendered, or at the very least touched up. The lighting is quite incredible though, for a minute I figured it was the new Unreal engine they've been showing off for a while now.
Of course if it's in game I may very well find myself buying an X Box 360 myself...

it is using the U3 engine..
as for Halo3, steak.. they have the tech to make halo 3, if they built up on the previous engine somewhat to improve polies, textures, bumpmaps, effects, etc..
but, whatever the case.. whenever the halo 3 screenies are released, the server that hosts them will suffer a very bad fate through sheer overload. :p

I'm referring to the idea explained here:
http://rampancy.net/halo_3_are_they_or_arent_they
Now I'm quite curious about it. But I must admit I doubt the franchise would change hands so quickly.

same here, we'll just have to wait and see...
Bungie did say that their next game won't be announced "for some time", so who knows..

Oh. Dear. God.
*must upgrade PC once games like these get ported*
-
Thunder: as far as I know, they're all 100% ingame, with no touch-ups. It's not really such a leap, if you consider the hardware they're using. And like Turnsky said, Gears of War is using the Unreal Engine 3, and is being made by Epic themselves. For the time being, it's Xbox exclusive, though I strongly suspect that it will make it's way to the PC at some point.
For my money, the most realistic looking screenshot is this one:

The so-called UT2007 should be released mid to late 2006. The best part is I don't need to have the world's best computer to play it; they are designing it so that if you have the computer to handle it, you can use full graphics, but if you have a computer that is as of right now middle class, you can still play it with the graphics quality of UT2004.
-
Cheers for the info on what engine it's using (I'm glad I can recognise it!).
I guess I'm also forgetting that consoles are specifically built for games, so all this lighting and blooming and physics and what have you is built straight into the game. Certainly though, things are looking gorgeous. I just hope the gameplay holds up.
-
You can bet that they already have a UT2k whatever, or UT3 in development for the computer. :)
-
It's all nice and pretty, but am I the only one who think that reality is overrated?
-
/me agrees with Anaz. All of these graphical/physics enhancements are all well and good, and I can't deny that I'm drooling over those screenshots, but in a way, I share the opinion of the author of 8-Bit Theater (http://www.nuklearpower.com). The more that these systems focus on stunning graphics, the higher the production costs for games become, the fewer games are released, and the less variety we have to choose from. I think that problem even exists today; maybe it's just me, but I feel that most of the games out there are too similar to one another, and I'm not really interested in any of them. The only upcoming game I'm really looking forward to is the new Zelda game, and I don't even have a GameCube yet. :p Maybe I'm just a PC holdout; I like the idea of being able to play 11-year-old games on the same system that I can play games released last month. And, with the aid of emulators, I can play games from just about any console out there. I'm not exactly full of money; I doubt I'm going to get any of these new consoles anytime soon, and if I do, I know it probably won't be the X-Box. You may call me a Luddite, but I'd much rather have several years between the release of new consoles, and much more effort put into getting the most of the existing hardware, than the cycle of having to buy a whole new set of consoles every few years.

Am I the only one who thought Halo (the first one) just plain sucked?
-
Nope. I thought it was pretty average.
-
*stumbles into thread*
DAMN!
Put a warning on this thing! You just about fried my poor modem!
BTW, isn't Fight Night going to be on both the Xbox360 and the PS3?
Removed because of mass-confusion.
Makes sense because the PS3 dev kit hasn't been out long at all. I'm kinda mad that people thought that the Killzone stuff was in-game... Is it just me, or is Sony the ultimate hype machine?
Thanks Rictor, thos PD0 screenshots restored some of my faith in the games looks, the other screenshots I saw were bad... Though I don't like the anime style they seem to have adopted.
And for those who want to know what custom faceplates will look like on the Xbox:
Solid colors will be available too.

I thought that also. The second one wasn't too bad though.
-
Why did you link to an article about the PS2 Killzone intro?
-
Ugh, my mistake.
-
I tried playing Halo for all of twenty minutes, and I really didn't find it that enjoyable; then again, I don't really like the "groundpounder" genre in general. I'm sure that it was a decent game, but I don't think it deserves a tenth of the hype it's received. In my opinion, the only truly great thing about Halo is Red vs. Blue. :p

yeah but that shots got less detail than most of the others, and the detail, backround, and environment shots on the PS3 appear to outclass the xbox360. sure the Gears of War normal maps look nice but ****, you can make out the fuzz and grain on the soldiers uniforms in killzone2. and the shots from gears of war look just like the demo we saw way back when, the displacement map demo and stuff, and the hardware the xbox360 matches the gia rig they used to run that demo

Why do all the characters in all of epic's games feature honking huge crotch-guards.
