I have a wee problem. I'm using 3dex to view models as I draw their maps, but the version I use (1.5.3) only allows textures up to 1024*1024 - which is half the size I need. I'm trying to avoid having both max & photoshop open at the same time, so any advice? A simple reg hack'd be smashing (but unlikely).

Does 3dex not resize the images down? I know the detail'd suck... but it works, ne?

You could always... upgrade... to version 2. I've not had any problems.

i usually like to keep my modeling program open with photoshop, that way if i need to do any minor uv map changes i can on the fly without having to load and unload programs. also you can set up a photoshop action to scale and save your work in progress to a different file. thats what i do to avoid accidently loosing all my layers by saving a flattened version on top of it. layers make it easyer to go back and do shine/glow/env maps, so id like to keep them.

It's not much use if I'm trying to work on a per-pixel level, is it?

this is what you do: do a draft version of the details on the low res texture, then resize it when you're done and do the details on the high-res one.

No.
