I think this is actually the last thing from RL that can be copied in the OL world. Since there are already suicide bombing viruses. There are already pre-emptive strikes (steam) and now this.

Well, you know, it's kinda stupid actually. Kidnapping for profit isn't something people do that much anymore, because law enforcement comes down on you like a ton of bricks. You have to give away your location to make it work.
Pretty much the same thing applies here. If you're transferring it into an online account, that can be tracked fairly easily. So really, you're screwing yourself.

Kidnapping is still common, and more often than not they just kill the person.
