STAR WARS HURT THEM!!! BAN STAR WARS!!!1111oneoneoneoneone

You'd think that 20 year old had more brains, but no...
-
they could have just bought some from www.parksabers.com.

Total....****ing....idiots.
EDIT: Darwin Award. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_Award)
-
Why buy something safe when you can fill long, easily-shattered light-fixture tubes with a highly volitile accelerant, light them on fire, and bang them together for less?
Idiots.
EDIT: In all seriousness, I'd love to know how they possibly thought that what they were building wouldn't explode. There isn't a single part of the story that shows forethought in any way, shape or form.

Either that, or they were into some really kinky ****.
-
This is both very funny and rather baffling....
-
I think they knew the tubes would break upon the slightest impact. They were just making believe they were fighting, without actually touching "sabres", but then one must have gotten carried away and actually struck the other.
What i don´t get is, what does the gasoline inside a tube does?!
Glow? Doubt it. It would last but a second. And the heat would be too much for them to hold the tube.
Had they tried it with alcohol, it might have worked, minus the explosion risk, and they would get a nice blue colour. Maybe they wanted Darth Sidious red colour, uh?
Still, that was as dumb as they come. Not worth a Darwin award, since they can still procreate, but they came very close. It´s a Retard Award for sure, though.
I give them an A for the effort of recreating a light-sabre duel, but then they get an F in movie prop security.
:blah:
-
No... from what I gatherred, they filled the tube with petrol, intending to light the petrol and having the fire make the tubes glow, so they can then mock fight. But when they ignited the petrol, they all went boom.
-
Exposed gas in tube.
Fumes in tube.
Fumes exploded when lit.
-
all i can say is
molotov coctail

Funnily enough, I saw something similar on a sketch on SNL this weekend. The difference is the characters on the sketch burned each other with curling irons while having a lightsabre duel instead of with tubes of hydrocarbons.
-
Upon further investigation, it seems highly likely that in addition to gasoline, they also put some form of soap into the tube. Napalm in a thin glass shell is a weapon, alright, (un)fortunately one better suited to killing the person wielding it than whoever he attacks.
-
Does anyone else want to see the video? :D
-
This is bull. I don't see a clear cut connection to Star Wars here, other than they were swinging something elongated. Actually, anyone could've done that. I guess they assumed they were fans when they found out about the gasoline. Did you notice the article only mentions Star Wars at the end? It sounds to me like they just threw that in because trying to link it to Star Wars would get more attention.
Don't fluorescent lights have mercury or some other dangerous elements/chemicals in them? Anyway, what a bunch of idiots. If you're going to do something stupid like that, at least wear protection! (http://www.collegehumor.com/?image_id=129955)

Did you actually read it?
[q]A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.
The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
A third person present at the incident had been questioned, police said.
A videotape was found nearby by police called to the scene on Sunday.[/q]

Why does everyone assume that they were filming a duel? Maybe they were trying to film the explosion of the Death Star. That's certainly similar to what they got after all :D
