Title: Best model you ever made: Competition
Post by: Swamp_Thing on May 25, 2005, 08:47:57 am
Ok, we already had the "ugliest model in the universe" competition (wich didn´t end very well), how about making the opposite? Instead of posting ugly things that no one cares about and is only used to bash their designers, how about we each post the model (or models) that we consider to be our finest work?
It might even help people remembering stuff long forgotten, and new guys get a heads-up of what this community has done in modelling.
Post 2 of your best work, textured or not (non textured is good to see the fine details of the model, that textures tend to hide, but textured is also good to see the work done in that field aswell), in-game or not, it´s your choice.

I open with the model i got the most satisfaction making. A
massive non-textured battle tank, equipped with a giant howitzer cannon:

(http://images5.theimagehosting.com/MassiveTank1.jpg) (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

(http://images5.theimagehosting.com/MassiveTank2.jpg) (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

And my second choice is the Blackbird fighter:
(http://images5.theimagehosting.com/BlackbirdFinal1.jpg) (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

(http://images5.theimagehosting.com/BlackbirdFinal2.jpg) (http://www.theimagehosting.com)

So, post away!!
:)

PS: ORIGINALS ONLY, NO REMAKES.

can we post more than 2, or is it limited only to that?
Title: Best model you ever made: Competition
Post by: Swamp_Thing on May 25, 2005, 09:22:49 am
More than 2 and you fill a whole page with one guy´s work. Too much. Just 2 is best.

@Topace

Ah, common, don´t tell me you are saving them for your eyes only?! Let´s see it. You don´t have to post if you don´t want to, but it would be nice if you did.
Obviouslly, models that belong to a certain mod that hasn´t been released and you wish to keep it a secret doesn´t count. I have a couple myself. Post stuff you can have released to the public.

Well, fighter-models wise, the best I can offer is the Idun (although its not my absolute favourite)

My pet favourite, and currently WIP, is of course, the Triest. All the turrets are currently being re-worked, but I'll post what I have so far.

Very, very impressive. The only thing you could improve is the texture. It looks a bit monotonous. (But on a high level. ;7 )

Mesh-wise, I consider the Battlestar Galactica to be my current baby despite the fact that its still a WIP.

Still not finished, and it's unlikely to get finished, as I can't figure out how to texture things in Max. It also needs more details - there are a few nice greeble-ish bits on there (three observation decks/bridges, and a bit of superstructure detail here and there) but it took me so long to get this far, and I'm working on a Vasudan strike frigate/light destroyer thingy at the moment. I may get back to it when I know how to texture...

If anyone's interested in seeing more of this, there's a thread on it somewhere. Search for "Iron Duke"...

EDIT: Good grief, that's an awful picture. It looks like it's made of plasticine... :ick: Oh well....

Does my BSG post count? I missed the part where the model should be "original" in design.

Well this is not a current work. This was my first fighter model built in '98 and its still my favorite original design.

EDIT; incidentally, do you have any idea how long it took to add the scratches... per pixel, across the entire model by hand... to this - and you can't even see them unless you squint ingame!

Oh, and I know about the problem with the bomb-bay.

Carl's design looks like it could be a Star Wars design, like an Empire small battleship with emphasis on fire-power rather than multi-role like a Star Destroyer.  No fighterbay.

I´m both glad i opened this thread, and embaraced. Glad because this is a feast for the eyes, embaraced because i pale in comparison.
I just would like to ask that people post only a maximum 3 pictures per model, not to clutter the page too much and enrage those poor 56k users. :p

@Aldo

Where the hell were you hidding those?? If only i could texture like that...
You take the prize so far. Astonishing work.

Carl´s work is also true eye candy. The model itself is simple, but those textures bring it to life. It has cinematic quality.

Now let´s see some more, guys!! Start dusting those models out of hidding! :D

It is??
If that´s true, that model deserves a new prize category on its own! The patience required to greeble all that would be inhuman!!

Yeah, aldo's model rocks.

Carls model also deserves a price in another category.

But Axem and Singh did also well. Axem just started modelling and I think it's the same for Singh.

And Omniscrapers model is great too. It's not original, but still great.

Well, almost all of these models are great. ;)

Damn, I would give everything when I could create textures from scratch like some of you guys around here :( (or model like that). Mine are certainly not the best around here, but still I'm kinda proud of them :) (even If I didn't invented , but just rebuild and Highpolified them, Just wanted to note that )

Probably still the Akula, though I'm working on something else...

Curiously, the Akula is resisting going ingame, starting with conversion to .3ds resulting in all the textures screwing up, then moving to an insanely high polycount for reasons I can't determine, and finally my ineptness at doing LODs for it. I haven't even thought about tables yet...

I think he's making a certain childish comparison of the kind that Raa has been squashing recently. If he's not, he's welcome to correct me, but if he is, then he can take it somewhere else, 'cos I don't appreciate it...

C4D renders anything under twenty thousand polies in a few seconds...it's light sources that are the real trouble.

Intended armament is 11 launchers for what will essentially be table-hacked Cyclops torpedos, 4 AAAf, 6 Terran Turret, and 8 "Light Flak", essentially table-hacked Long Range Flak.

Heh, those WCSaga ships are wierd to look at. I mean, they look really boxy (because they're based off the original WC models, I'm guessing), but they're actually pretty detailed. Makes for quite interesting models. In a good way, I mean. :)

actually, this mesg will not work in FS engine at all. The model file is around 50 mb.

oh there are plans for a KDN, it is even built but has to be textured in a way to match WCS high quality standards. (Which is not easy considering it's length)

If you've got detail ideas, I'm open to them; frankly I'm running out.

The Akula was essentially meant to blow up or cripple a Shivan cruiser with one salvo. Towards this end, the Cyclops hack I'm currently considering has a subsystem damage multiplier value of about 3.3 or so...

LOL!! You must be from around here for a year or so! :)

I had a project featuring a lot of models, but had to step away from it because no one could texture my ships decently, and I had/have some real life "time eaters"... the project so far is on stand by until I learn to texture decently and I have some more time on my hands :)

This baby was supposed to be a Terran/Vasudan Destroyer for the GTVA...

If you want to see some more stuff, search the modding forums for my old threads and you'll see tons of ships :)

Glad my stuff isn't yet outdated :D

@Aldo

The GTD Charlatan (what´s with the strange name, btw) is beautifull, with only one snag. Those crate like structures in the bow are ugly and don´t fit the rest of the ship. It´s like it grew a cancerous appendix. :D

@Carl

I finally figured out what your style reminded me of. It´s Nexus the Jupiter Incident, all the way. Those ships are very "Stilletto" styled, wich is a very good thing btw.

There are still lots of people who haven´t posted yet. What gives? Get crackin´!!

There are storyline reasons for those......... and Charlatan is the ship name, not the class name.

You cannot compare models by the numer of polies...

IIRC, the Triest (the earlier version) was around 500k polies as well. So Dabrain is right, comparing polies is nothing.

Remember; its never the size or how much...its what you put in it or do with it that counts :p

indeed, that shivan superjug i posted 4671 polies(untriangulated). it will have more once its interior is finished. the pf chimera (2nd model i put up) has 5920 polies (untriangulated), mainly cause of the interior and all the animated subobjects. the highest poly model i have is the pf rumrunner (not shown), with 7255 plies (untriangulated) is my highest poly ship, but most of its detail is in its turrets, which im still not happy with. the rumrunner is also an example of how good texturing can save an otherwise crappy looking model.

That is NOT the released model, BTW. That model is ~500k polys. Too much even for SCP. However, a reduced poly version, which looks just as good, and has far cleaner geometry and comes in at around 13k polys was released a long while back. There's, to the best of my knowledge, two people doing texturing jobs on that model. That's been for a year now. I've heard nothing since.

its future pirate to be exact, vaudan tech is a major commodity on the black market. so pirates are partially bioplated or utilize hybrid designs.

i should give jolly rodger a 90 degree turn so it looks better at different angles. that being the only thing i dont like about this ship. the pirate logo is upside down on the lower 2 wings.

I said this elsewhere, and I'll say it again here.  Why is it important enough to ask?

Some people like that cartoonish look.  Some applications make it more or less necessary (a robotech mod, for example, would benefit from this).  But ultimately it's just to change the look of the game, much in the same way as the improved shockwaves/effects have done though in a slightly different manner.  It's really not worth derailing threads over.
