Title: ST TNG's Ro Laren/Michelle Forbes
Post by: Sandwich on May 26, 2005, 05:52:26 pm
After having watched all the TNG episodes, I have come to the conclusion that Ro Laren/Michelle Forbes is by far the best, most talented actor/actress of the show, bar none.

Also, having watched a few of the DVD extras (I forget whether they were the TNG extras or the DS9 ones), I find it nearly tragic that she wasn't chosen to be the Bajoran officer on DS9 instead of Major Kira. Not that Nana Visitor does a bad job or anything - she's quite good - but IMO she pales in comparison to Michelle Forbes.

Anyone else think the same thing?

I haven't seen the many of the episodes for TNG to judge the acting done by Michelle Forbes.

She's also a recurring actress in season 2 of 24, apparently, though I haven't yet seen the show.

She was chosen - and turned it down.

Is quite good in Messiah on the beeb, though.... I can't say I've ever rated any of the Star Trek actors, tis very hard to, well, act in lycra or something presumably.

Spoiler:

Ro Laren? She was Season 7. Defected at the end of Preemptive Strike IIRC.

Not bad.

I don't know how someone can say that about a show in which Patrick Stewart plays the main character.

Spoiler:
In the DS9 Relaunch novels (Avatar, et al.), Ro Laren was given an unconditional pardon by the Bajoran government and invited to replace Odo as security chief on DS9. After Bajor finally joined the Federation and the vast majority of the Militia joined Starfleet, Ro was given her Starfleet commission back.... by Picard himself.

If they ever decide to do a post-series DS9 movie, I expect Michelle Forbes would hold Paramount over a barrel for a few million bucks....

Dunno if I've ever seen an episode with her in it.

I don't know if she was the best... (I like a few of the main cast better) but she was pretty cool.

So true, Patrick Stewart is by far one of the best actors in the TNG Series, but before you judge, you have to watch the sequence with him dancing around the Bridge of the Enterprise singing the ABCs (i think saw it on a Biography thing on the History Channel a while back), in a word...Highlarious...

I don't know, Patrick Stewart's good, but he's missing something that, for example, the new BSG characters are infused with. The ability to act a part without it seeming like you're an actor playing the part. He had it at times, but even then... :doubt: Look at the scene in First Contact, when Picards has that hissy fit about stopping the Borg, and the line being drawn "heeah!" It's overacted - doesn't seem natural.

I dunno, perhaps it's just a matter of mismatching the actor to the character, but IMO Forbes is an excellent example of someone who infuses her character with her own personality, and comes across as "real" because of that.

Spoiler:
That would be a good trick seeing as the Dominion helped Cardassia wipe out all the Maquis left in the Alpha Quadrant.

I don't know why everyone is so much in love with Picard, even though I think Patrick Stewart rocks.  I'm much more of a Kirk guy myself. :D As for Ro Laren, I think I saw only one episode with her in it, so I don't know the character well enough to form an opinion.

Spoiler:
They wiped out the Maquis headquarters at Tevlik Prime. Ro wasn't there when it happened.... although it hasn't been established where she was.

Quite true, he went completely overboard in that scene and reached levels of overacting usually reserved for Avery Brooks :doubt:

 Yeah, what's with that guy? I mean, I generally like him, but when he goes off on one of his "procounce every single letter of every single word to emphasize that you're getting angry" stints, it's just weird.

I think people confuse Stewart's exuberant Englishness with overacting.

I consider Stewart's rendition of Jean-Luc Picard to be the best of the Star Trek captains. And the slights overacting can most likely be attributed to his roots in performing Shakespeare.

On a related note, am I the only one who still doesn't get why they cast a guy who is obviously English as French?

I really wish the TNG box sets weren't so expensive. $50 or so I could justify to myself, but $100 is just too high.

That would be great and all, but I've never actually seen Kirk speak like that.  I have no idea where that whole parody came from. :p
