Title: No connection to the internet: who's asking though?
Post by: phatosealpha on May 27, 2005, 10:34:12 pm
Allright folks, heres the deal

Every once in a while, windows will pop up one of those 'no connection to the internet is available' windows.  I want it to do this, since I'm on 56k and don't want the thing connecting willy-nilly to anything without my approval.

The problem is it tends to pop these things up right in the middle of my games.  I've been killing processes and service left and right, and haven't managed to find the bugger who's trying to connect without me asking.

So, here's the question:  anyone know of a tool that would let me know what process or program is trying to connect to the internet so I can figure out how to stop it?

I hate those f*cking popups!

You could be about to finish the hardest freaking mission in the game, then suddenly you are sent to your desktop with a popup saying "your virus defenitions are out of date".  As we all know, you can't maximize FS2SCP after it was already minimized.

As for a tool, I have no idea!

no zone alarm doesnt do that. if you are on dialup a firewall would make your internet slow as hell. zone alarm may tell you whats using the internet but the popups i believe are part of windows networking. you could try killing the error reporting service, but im not sure if thats the right one. i remember i killed the popups once before but i forgot exactly how.

use zonealarm without the firewall, just so you can control access...

I got ZoneAlarm with a 50user licence of NetVanta VPN Client. Just curious if its free or not?

Not really. I'm using the free copy of ZoneAlarm on a 56k, and the only thing it slows down at all is BitTorrent, which is sort of foolish to use on a 56k line anyway.
