Oh Jesus.

My fear is not that anyone will take this seriously, but that it will seep into popular opinion over the years and one day it won't seem so crazy.

The use of knives is particularly worrying amongst adolescents, say the researchers, reporting that 24% of 16-year-olds have been shown to carry weapons, primarily knives.

What the hell? What sort of ghetto did they take these statistics in? I can't imagine that sort of thing in the UK. Is there that big a white-trash problem over there?

.......

Well, yet another silly idea. I admit that knife assaults are a problem, but this is completely unrealistic. It'd be impossible to enforce and police, and would be nothing more than an annoyance. I use one of those when I cook, and I'd be screwed if I didn't have it (I'd have to use an axe instead)...

I'm all for stiff sentences for assault, but banning everything that could potentially be used in one is simply stupid....

Gun Control as one time was unheard of or considered stupid but it seems to sip in unexpectidly.

What exactly do you mean knife assaults are a problem? Do you mean knife assault in particular, like an epidemic, or are they a problem the same way that jaywalking is a problem?

I can sympathize. Canada too is enacting ever more fascistic measures in pursuit of the "public good". Just a little while ago, they banned pitbulls outright. F***ing nanny state bastards.

over here forks would probably constitute as a knife in the legal sense of the word. just as screwdrivers are.

basically, everything you can stab people with is a knife, and thusly not permitted publicly unless it's needed for your work. not that it really matters, though. it's only enforced on thugs.

What about baseball bats.. cricket bats.. any kind of mechanics tools.. just because a kitchen knife makes a useful and available tool doesn't mean there aren't hundreds more within easy reach of anyone who really is set upon being dangerous.

It should be far more simple. Lock the ****ers away. Don't let them out for a very long time, and in time the thugs will find their numbers dwindling.

Yes, in certain areas.  A lot of deprived, poverty-striken areas still; the high-rises in Glasgow strike me as an obvious example.  All society has some from of 'underclass' who are, basically, scum.  That in turn motivates fear; you have people (kids) who carry knives to stab people, and then those who do so for their own defense (even though they don't understand the impracticality of it).

Knife assaults, I would guess, are this countries closest equivalent to Americas gun crime problem. There are already age requirements for buying sharp knives like this, so I don't see what the point would be; ultimately even a crime of impulse requires the criminal to have some concept of what they are doing.  The converse is that your really don't need this type of knife - the medium long unserrated blade.

we don't have a gun problem. We just have a problem with people wanting to kill one another.

*points to sig* i am armed with a dangerous weapon!..

seriously, all i can do with this kind of idiotic law, is mock it.

i mean, with guns, you can sit a bullet on a table, and yell until you die from exhaustion, telling it to kill you, same with a gun, a knife, or anything else of the like...

guns, and knives don't harm people, it's the dickwad in operation of said weapon who does.

And since they use guns, that translates to a gun problem - no matter how much you'd like it not to.

Who have easy access to a tool designed for the express purpose of killing people, i.e. a gun, and which makes it easier to do so.  Hence, gun problem.

Seriously.

I have a 10CM folding knife, and it's great for making lunch. Unfortunately, I cannot carry it anywhere except on hiking trips, since knifes are scary weapons. Now, this knife especially has a folding back security, so you might be able to stab someone without it folding back on your own fingers, but even a 5 CM knife without a proper foldback safety is illegal.

OTOH, I can carry size 47(EU)/12(UK) boots with heavy noses, enough to bash someones skull in if I managed to get him on the ground first.

Banning Gun ownership or even limiting it doesn't solve the underlying problem. It doesn't take into account that humans base nature is destructive. No matter what you do people will kill people. Knives will be banned, then bats, then golf clubs, needle nose plyers, pick axes etc. Limiting gun ownership or the possesion of knives doesn't change anything. All you have done is taken away a means for law abiding citizens to defend themselves from those that wish to harm them. In addition to this all you do by banning something is that you create a black market for it, ie drugs.

I'm with redmenace on this one, the tool isn't the problem. Solving the "problem" by way of making unavailable everyting that could potentially be used as a weapon is absurd, it punishes the 99% of people who don't commit crimes as well. It is impossible, at present, to completely get rid of crime except by having a totalitarian state. You can have more or less of it, but crime is a fact of life. Taking away the means to commit crime doesn't work, and it takes away the freedoms of the innocent. When I look around my room, I see at least 15 things I could use to kill someone if I wanted to, not counting my own two hands.

The solution is to *****-slap the petty thugs who are desperate enough to actually attack with a knife. I mean, we're talking about Britain in the 21st century, not the slums of Rio de Janeiro. It can't be that big of a problem.

This all goes without talking about the encroachment on individual rights. if one wishes to subjugate a population you first get rid of their means to resist you. With out a means to resist and defend yourself, you have no choice but to obey the authority with weapons.

even if they take away anything that could be used as a weapon, people will just push each other into traffic or strangle each other with shoelaces. Human are clever and if our current weapons are taken away we'll just improvise new ones.
