Title: general hello and some advice *longish* post
Post by: Roberto88h on May 28, 2005, 09:26:30 pm
Hey i'm new to the forums, so first of all hi!.

second, a few years back for roughly $10USD I bought FS1 and the Silent threat expansion in a bundle.  I played through the campaign a few times and have periodically uninstalled and reinstalled them throughout the years.  They have given me much joy and happiness and are some of the two most charished games I own.

Now down to business:

For the past year or so I've been going through as many PC game bargain bins I can find looking for FS2 and have been unsucessful.  Finally a few days back I downloaded the HOTU version of FS2.  While, I'm very happy that I finally found the game, as you all know it has some severe limitations (no hi res, minimal sound, animations, etc.).  I have performed many searches on this forum and others, and I have googled and scoured the web, but alas all my efforts to find a way of getting the files needed to remove these limitations have been in vain.

This is where you come in.

I am very happy to have FS2 at all, and in a worst case scenario, I would live with what I have, but I would be forever in someones debt if they could give me or show me how to get even one of the ".vp" files I need.  I do not care if it involves getting the 3 ISO's or just 1 .vp file.  I have DSL so I can get even the ISO's done in one night.  I looked at the stickied post about the FTP at the top of these forums and nothing there is of much use.

Please, if some one could provide a method of me getting rid of even one limitation in my current verion of FS2 I would be, quite literally, in your debt.  Even if you tell me there is no way to solve this then I will be happy that I know for sure that I am stuck.

You may post solutions in this thread, send me a PM, or even shoot me an email, even if it's only to tell me I'm screwed.

If I have missed an obvious solution to my problem then I am very sorry and you may let the flaming commence.

Thanks for all of your help in advance,

Robert :thepimp:

Thanks for the quick response Dark Revanant.

Keep the post rolling please.

I'm up to 6 post and I've only been a part of these forums for less than 30 minutes.  I'm on Fiyah

Thanks a lot Black Wolf, but sadly all of the links on that page say "Bandwidth Exceded" when I click on them. Maybe at the beginning of next month they'll work...

Thanks a lot, but if anyone has any other alternatives I would really appreciate it.

Have you tried eBay or Amazon?

While you'd be set back a fair amount of money (anywhere from $20 to $100) at least you'd have your own copy.

Thanks for all the replies so far.  In the  end I might end up buying the game online after all:sigh:.

By the way, just an idle question, does anybody have any good suggestions for FS1 mods or something to givemy copy of FS1 some extra life?

PS.
This forum is by far the forum with the quickest response time i've ever seen. Sometimes I end up waiting for a couple of days before I get a half decent answer. This place is awesome.

Wasn't Derelict originally an FS1 campaign?

i don't recall it being one...

There's a lot of old FS1 campaigns lying around, and very few new ones... I'd say to check the Volition watch archives ( www.freespace.volitionwatch.com iirc...) for them, but some of them might be corrupted.

http://fs2.kissifrot.com/index_fs.php
Theres a list of the newer FS1 campaigns, though afaict, there is only one with downloadable content...

If you want to play a mod, see The Babylon Project.  You do not need FS2 to play it, though it was originally a mod for FS2.

Question to those in the know: given the odd legal status of FS2, would posting a torrent be frowned upon?

EDIT: also, a quick ebay search turned up several copies, so you may get one for a good price...

Thanks everyone.  I'll have to check out those campaigns.  Is the Babylon Project any good, I'd hate to download a huge file and find out it's really not that good.

If you want to show me a way to get the files I want but don't want to post them, you could always email me or send me a PM.

Hippo:
The first link you posted is dead.

Thanks. :thepimp:

Hippo's first link is supposed to be http://freespace.volitionwatch.com.

As for downloadable content, while my FS1 campaign isn't done yet, I released a single mission not too long ago. :p

FS2 almost old enough to be considered freeware.
The marketing company, Interplay, is quite dead, rendering the game as something that is no longer in production.  Since it is not produced and is not in stores, it has no sales value, and is technically free.  If the games liscence is suddenly bought, or if Interplay suddenly is reborn or bought, the game revives its value.  If anyone was to download it past that point, they would be breaking the law.  Luckily, if you get it now, the law is not broken.

There was some clause in ome country that a liscence would expire after a certian number o years (5 i belive), but we have to remember that right before died, they DID re-release it, so even in their crippled state, they still have an active liscence...

Oo Poo!   Anyway doesn't Matt sill offer the ISO's at game warden?

http://www.game-warden.com/forum/index.php?

BTW yes the Babylon project IS that good... To say otherwise would be herasey! (Cardinal biggles, get THE COMFY CHAIR!)

Oh yeah and there are MANY other mods in development just as good or hopefully a close second..

Do you have any skills that could help any of these projects out?. (have to ask) :D

sorry I don't have any skills involved in helping with a mod (coding, modeling, skinning, etc.).

But I'm willing to learn!:)

Join the FRED Academy when you get hold of FS2.

Try the link Getter posted. If Matthewpapa isn't hosting the files at the moment, PM me and I'll see if I can sort something out for you....

LoL. You'd be surprised how often people make that mistake ;)

So  Fractux's FTP server is no go? Strange, I could have sworn it had all the extra features needed to jump from HOTU version to Complete Version...

I'm biased since I run it but if you want to make your own missions the FRED Academy is a good place to start :)

More details on what it's all about can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,28122.0.html)

Very true. Though people always spell my name wrong in real life as well (it's Alun - pronounced "Al-inn" - but people spell it Alan or Allen or anything they can think of other than what it's supposed to be :doubt: ), so I'm used to it. ;)

My name is Patrick. In the past 2 Years, I've had 4 Teachers mistake it for "Patricia." Not as often, but the End result hurts a lot worse. :nervous:

WHEE!
