Title: Untranslated Vasudan Talk
Post by: J.P. on May 31, 2005, 10:58:12 pm
I was looking through the threads trying to see if there was a tutorial or something that said if there was a way to edit someones voice to sound vasudan. I found this: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,17188.0.html

Galemp said he was working on it but I didn't find one that said he found out how. Has anyone ever figured it out?

What most people do is cut up the vasudan speech that came with the game and rearrange it.

If Galemp has cracked it though I'd be interested in hear how too :)

Try mucking about with a bit of recorded speech in Goldwave or something similar - you can get something pretty close. I haven't tried it for years, though, so I can't remember how I did it....

You don't have to exactly replicate Volition's stuff 100% perfectly. Not all Vasudans would necessarily have the same voice.

Yeah, but the voice you hear is the product of a translator, rather than the Vasudan's actual voice, so everything would be pretty similar. Some differences would be ok, though.

I assume that J.P is after the actual Vasudan's voice rather than the translators cause there is a guide on how to do that in Goldwave or Cool Edit lurking about somewhere.

I'm pretty sure there was a good 7 seconds or so of straight Vasudan speach on the ST CD or something...

Check in either Sparky.vp or (I think) the Inferno main VP.  They have Vasudan speech in differing lengths with no translated speech.

Yes, I have that file. What I am asking is does anybody know how to edit a voice to sound like that?

Very, Very carefully.;)
I did it once but it's a PITA to keep any new sounds from interfering with the original Vasudan string.  It helps to edit the sound as a bi-channel stereo file and then recombine into mono.

At least that's how I got it to work.  But that was quite a while ago...

Reversing and mechanising several times in Goldwave... that got you pretty close to the Vasudan sound.

"I can make everything from scratch
I start off with something like this for the untranslated vasudan
just act like you've got something in you're throught that doesn't want to be there

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/origonaluntranslated.wav

then I use the pitch tool and reduce it to about .75, makeing sure to preserve lenght
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/75pitchuntranslated.wav

then I make a new file for the translated speach

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/origonaltranslated.wav

then mechanise it by 30

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/maechanisedtranslated.wav

then I mix them

http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/blackwater/final.wav

I did all that in about two minutes so it isn't the best it could be but you get the point"

That's not entirely true. If you listen carefully, you can hear another voice that starts before you hear the translation. It's very deep and difficult to hear, but it's there.

Nonono, you misunderstand. Obviously the actual Vasudan speech will be different for every individual, but the English speech is produced by the translator, so it will be a standard voice. Like using the Narrator in Windows - it's a standard voice-synthesis program. It'd vocalise the same way no matter who was speaking.

For voice-acting a campaign, you'd overlay the "Vasudanised" speech recorded by the VA on top of a Vasudan speech sample included with FRED.

To a degree I agree with you but the voice of Commander Abu, Khonsu II and Admiral Khafre are all different so at the very least there must be different models of the translator.
