Title: Download 2005
Post by: pyro-manic on June 04, 2005, 12:43:07 pm
So who's going, then? :)

//www.downloadfestival.co.uk

Highlights include:

Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!)
System of a Down
Slayer
Motorhead
Megadeth
In Flames
Mastodon
Velvet Revolver
Nightwish (having them on stage before Slayer probably wasn't a good move, though...)
Anthrax

It's too bad eight of thoser I never heard of, and the other two I hate.  Just my tastes, though. :blah:

Velvet Revolver and Nightwish would be good enough reason to go. Unfortunately, I can't.

Shock-rockers Society 1 are preparing to make history yet again by breaking the world record for the longest set performed while a lead-singer is hung up by meat hooks!

Yep, it's gruesome. They stick half a dozen meathooks through the flesh of his shoulders and hang him up by them. Then he sings. Kind of stupid, but good shock value....

I saw something similar to that at the live act just before the Suicide Girls came on at Reading last year. This girl was hung up by hooks through her skin and did various ballet like moves. It actually took me a while for it to click that I was seeing someone impaled on a load of hooks. Captivating in a slightly disturbing way.

As for Download, I'd go if I could afford it. Unfortunately I've very little money so I'll just be going to Reading this year as usual.

I'm probably going to see Gigantour when it comes around

Megadeth
Dream Theater
Nevermore
Symphony X

Too bad ozzfest isn't coming around to cleveland since Sabbath, BLS, Shad Fall, Maiden and In Flames are headlining.

I´ve seen Anthrax live, some 15 years ago. I didn´t know they were still around.
They were the opening act for an Iron Maiden tour concert, the best live band EVER!!

I never heard these before, though:
In Flames
Mastodon
Velvet Revolver
Nightwish

mastadon and in flames are doom metal iirc, velvet revolver is neo-grunge (with the guy froom stp?), nightwish is finish power metal with a chick vocalist, and one of the few power metal bands i actually listen to.

In Flames can be considered as Melodic Death Metal, though. One of my favourites :D

Flogging Molly is going to be there. If you like Irish folk, or just a lot of craziness, go. If you like some very nice ballads too, make sure you go.

Mastodon are the "latest thing" in metal apparently - the music press has been wetting itself over them since their second album (Leviathan, which is bloody good by the way) came out last year. They mix trad metal, grindcore and a bit of hardcore. Their stuff is actually really good. They're great musicians (the drummer is f*cking brilliant) and they have some excellent songs. Well worth finding their albums: Remission and Leviathan

Velvet Revolver is basically G'n'R (Slash, Duff McKagan or however you spell it and someone else) with Scott Weiland from STP on vocals. I haven't heard any of their stuff, but they're meant to be pretty tidy.

In Flames are/were part of the "Gothenburg" death metal scene, but they've gone more melodic/proggy in recent years. Great band.

Nightwish are something of a phenomenon. They're a "symphonic" metal band - guitar/bass/drums, lotsa synths and a classically trained singer. They've just got "big" in the last year or so with their most recent album "Once", which has sold massive numbers of copies (it might even have gone platinum in Finland). They've spawned a string of mostly crap imitators, and they tend to polarise opinion - people either love them or hate them. I think they're pretty tidy. Best albums IMO are Century Child, Once and Oceanborn.

Incidentally, doom is the genre that is grossly underrepresented at the festival ('cept for Sabbath, obviously), along with black metal (none at all :doubt: )

Kalfireth: I want to go to Reading as well (MAIDEN!!!!!11one  *wets himself*), but finding tickets is proving rather tricky.... :(

Oh, and Suicide Girls - niiice... ;7 Have you seen the Probot video for the "Shake Your Blood" single? That was cool...

Man. Awesomeness.

I have to admit I'd go just for In Flames alone, but they never seem to make it to the US. (Or at least, not anywhere near where I am.)

Can't ignore Lamb of God, Chimaira, or Unearth either. All have surpassing awesomeness.

Motorhead... :) It's actually Motörhead (it's a Swedish band, hence the ö). The 'other' Motorhead is a very nice arcade racing game by Digital Illusion (a Swedish games company...coincidence?). It was released at about the same time Freespace 1 was. I think that Motorhead is immeasurably better than Freespace, especially the graphics. Sorry for going a bit off-topic. ;)

Erm, no. The drummer is a Swede, but Lemmy's English, and the guitarist is Welsh. ;) And they got their name because Lemmy got kicked out of his previous band (the mighty Hawkwind no less) because of his Speed habit. Motorhead is a slang term for a Speed addict in some city in America (Detroit IIRC, though I may be wrong), so that was used.

Nuke: talking of doom, have you got the new Candlemass? It's bloody good. Also, get some Grand Magus if you haven't already. Awesome. www.grandmagus.com  The site's a bit out of date, but there are some sample clips on there to listen to. Ulvaskall (Vargr) is a great one - heavy as hell. Their vocalist (JB, formerly of Spiritual Beggar) is fantastic.

Lemmy Kilmister rulez!! The guy has a wicked presence on stage.
Anyway, is it my impression or a very big percentage of HLP members are metalheads? And many also play the guitar? Maybe even in a band? I did, i was the lead guitarrist in a thrashcore band, but then drugs got in between and i left.
Sold my guitars to buy smack. I bought new ones a couple years ago, but the magic was just gone. I haven´t played the guitar in over a year...

I play (badly), though not in a band - just for fun at the moment. May join a band/jam a bit when I go to uni, but nothing planned as such.

Did you kick the drugs all right? Nasty way to go, that.

new candlemass, i have enough trouble finding old candlemass, but i like the sound. il try to find it. my bittorent performance sucks because aparently my upload speed is only 64k and so its hard to keep my share ratios up.

id like to be able to play guitar but i dont have any musical talent. however i could probibly join a band as a vocalist. i could something slayer-esc or death vocals with practice. other than that my chances of ever being in a band are pretty much nil.

i kicked my drug habbit, its just a matter of avoiding the stoners. the only way id go back is if the leegalized it, i which case id start a buisness growing it :D as it stands ~40% of alaskans want it to bee legalized.

:p
I´m not talking about hash and grass here, Nuke. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years, hardly the same thing.
At first it actually helped my guitar playing, as it gave me inspiration. But then the habbit kicked in, and in a moment of weakness i sold the guitar and my Peavey amp. I regreted it the very next day, after the money was all gone and the cold turkey set in.
:doubt:
I bought a new guitar 10 years later, thinking i could regain what i had lost, but it was too late. My guitarrist streak was gone. However, a new streak was born in its place, the drummer streak. I´m thinking of buying a set of drums, now. When i was living in France, i used to play one almost every day, and i got really good at it.

I'm not a metalhead, but I like the music. It's hard to be anything metal down here - this is the tropics, land of the steel pan and the short pants and bikinis :p Not to mention I've only been to one concert in my life :D

But anyway, on Nightwish: They have a very unique sound, it's not like any other band I've heard of (other than the really bad imitations). It's metal with all the electric guitars, but they really use the bass tones - something a lot of metal doesn't do, in my experience at least (they mostly hit the VWANANANANANANA, instead of the VUM VUM VUM :D). Also, the lead singer (Tarja, I forget her last name *ashamed fan*) is opera trained, to be more specific :).

Anyway, Black Sabbath and System of a Down are the only two other bans in that group I've heard of. Black Sabbath I don't really listen to, and System of a Down has a bit too much screaming and not enough actual notes for my taste, but they're ok :)

Has anyone heard of Spineshank or MDFMK? I just found out about both of them, and from what I can tell so far, both are pretty good.
Check out "Torpedoes" or "Missing Time" by MDFMK, and "Smothered" by Spineshank :)

Spineshank are to be fair, wank :) I have an interesting story about going to see them but that's for another day.

MDFMK were a sort of sideproject of the band KMFDM (I think it's due to name rights or something, pretty much the same band) who themselves are pretty badass, check out Skinny Puppy or at a push Nine Inch Nails (new album is badass BTW) for similar sort of thing, Ministry do the same sort of deal but more guitar oriented, also, Cubanate are damn good.

i wouldnt call there sound unique. its typical power metal as far as the instrumentals go. its also not the only band using opera trained vocalists (therion). i do dig tarja's finnish accent. :D this this type of sound is almost non-existant in american mainstream, though it is quite common in europe.

im more a liv kristine fan myself (theatre of tradgedy, leaves' eyes, and a few others), though she has more of a gothic metal sound. alot of beauty and the beast volcals. shes also a million times hotter that tarja and with a softer voice. she did guest vocals on the last cradle of filth album, which i thought was kinda cool (actually thats what it took to get me to listen to cof again :D).

as for the ones trying to capitalise by imitating this kinda sound (and poorly), like evanessence (anyone notice how scratchy her voice is?), they should be executed by a flamethrower weilding firing squad..

I don't know, I do like to listen to European bands (my tastes are pretty diverse :)) as well as American bands, and I haven't heard anything like Nightwish. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I haven't heard anyone. It's more than likely I've just been looking in the wrong places :D

i cant really name a good nightwish-alike of the top of my head. its probibly the only pairing of power metal and opera vocals ive heard. im not really into power metal myself.  im more into the goth metal, but not to the same degree as black or doom.

but definately check out therion, theatre of tragedy and leaves'eyes (essentially liv kirstine + atrocity), tristania, battle lore (alot of beauty and the beast vocals and alot of songs about tolkin fantasy).

Lacuna Coil?

And if you're looking for a unique sound, check out Children of Bodom (http://www.centurymedia.com/bands/Current/childrenofbodom.htm), Atheist (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47817DE47AA7220EABB1E6AE79147C629F066D5C02C120476F3982D4E862C71FB0AF39881B7E57CAB7BAFFF2BE85B0DD9CFEE5CF8D4765D40&uid=MIW050506091250&sql=11:47d6vwnva9uk~T0), Cynic (http://www.cynicalsphere.com), and Finntroll (http://www.centurymedia.com/bands/Current/finntroll.htm), and probably some later-era Death (http://www.emptywords.org) (Human, ITP, Symbolic, TSoP)

I love Lacuna Coil, but the vocals are not very opera-ish.
I'm still trying to read up on all the definitions of metal :D I don't really care what the genre is, I just like the music, but apparantly you have to know all the seperate genres and sub genres to not sound like a complete idiot.
Anyway, I'll check out most of those bands :)

By the way, do check out Kidney Thieves (they're more industrial though), Hollenthon, and E.S. Posthumous. The latter two are more "epic" types, while Kidney Thieves is an interesting listen.

Wheeeeeeeeee!. That was f*cking awesome. Megadeth scared the **** out of the indie kids on the Friday, and played a brilliant show. The weather was pretty tidy, if overcast for the most part.

On Saturday, Anthrax and Velvet Revolver were brilliant (the pit went nucking futs when Slash appeared), and Sabbath.... well, Sabbath were Sabbath. Amazing show, Ozzy on form, the place packed out to capacity. And me 20 feet from Tony Iommi. :D Also saw Meshuggah on the second stage. They are very, very scary live. Good stuff though. The weather was better than Friday, with some very strong sunshine in the afternoon, leading to sunburn during Anthrax's set.

On the Sunday, Lacuna Coil played a great show on the second stage (we were going to watch Nightwish on the main stage, but they had a ****ty mix, and the mate I was with hated it so we left), and we caught the last half of Slayer's set. Not a huge fan, but they played a tight set and I was impressed. Likewise with Slipknot - I hate their music (with the exception of Duality), but their stage show was excellent - pyrotechnics and epileptic lighting etc. Very impressive, and a hard act to follow. After a rather long break, where numerous female members of the crowd flashed to the cameras (to loud applause, I might add  ), System came on. They played brilliantly, though they looked exhausted (jet lag or some such probably), and they hardly talked to the crowd at all. Instead, they played straight through the set, with no encore (though it was nearly a two-hour performance), finishing with Sugar. The weather was horrible, however. The ambient temperature was fairly warm, but the wind was icy, and it was freezing as a result. It also rained briefly during Slipknot's set. Horrible.

All in all, what a weekend! Expensive, and sleeping in a tent for 4 days without proper facilities (the toilets were horrendous as to be expected, and the showers were definitely to be avoided) was rather unpleasant, but I don't care. Brilliant bands, brilliant shows, and thoroughly good fun for all...

Nah, not that I could see anyway. They played at like 5 in the afternoon, so it was broad daylight. hardly anything in the way of effects - not even much lighting. Kind of disappointing really, given the spectacle that Slipknot and System put on. But then they had some huge dark clouds and then sunset to set off the stage show.

I suspect they wouldn't be allowed to use it, because of the mess it would make. The backstage crew had a hell of a time rigging up the stage set for Slipknot anyway (took them nearly half an hour), so cleaning up pools of "blood" would have made it even longer. Pity really, though the fans seemed happy enough...

EDIT: Ooh, one more thing to add - go and see Lacuna Coil if you ever get the chance. Their singer is seriously hot. :D
