Because The Freespace EULA permits copy distrubition as long as you don't make money, I am considerinng hosting a deticated server where you can grab Freespace or Freespace 2 isos.
Should I
-
There already is one. Look around.
-
Another wont hurt. Especially if the former is down.
-
I don't suppose it'd hurt to have another one. You'd probably get quite a bit of traffic, though - could end up costing a fair bit if you're not careful about your bandwidth....
-
Host FS1 and ST.
-
for just a week?
not worth it
-
How many people are "in line", so to speak?
-
Is that EULA not only for Freespace 2?
When i'm remember correct you must buy Freespace 1, but can download Freespace 2...
-
That EULA is only for FS2 as far as I know.
I say definately yes. Even if it's only up for a week it would give some people a chance to grab the ISO and relieve the bandwidth on the other site (which maxed out last month).
The only comments I'd make are
1) Are you sure you have the bandwidth for this?
2) The EULA permits copies to be given to friends and aquaintances. I'm not 100% how easily you could justify letting random strangers from the net grab a copy (That said it's highly unlikely that interplay are in any state to complain at you).
3) Who are we allowed to tell? Everyone? :D
-
I reckon someone should set up a Torrent for it. I'd run it.
-
A torrent would be good too. They don't tend to stay up for long unfortunately. The TBP one was removed because people were just leeching.
-
Well, if we set up an arrangement where several of us continue to seed it for others - a dedicated "seed team" - then that would stop that from happening. That is, if speed and server bandwidth are an issue. But you're right, if we don't take any measures to prevent it, it'll just be leech city.
-
I've got a rar of the ISOs I can put a torrent up for, if anyone's interested. It's the standard version (not GOTY), comes in at about a gig and a half.
-
You can't put up FS1, that's warez. FS1's code wasn't released, hence, you can't distribute it for free.
-
What's an ISO? Imperial Service Order? International Organization for Standardization?

I wish that people would stop refering to the code release as if it had any relevence whatsoever as to whether we can put up FS2 for download. It has none whatsoever. Putting up FS2 for download is also warez. I thought I explained all this only last week (Click me (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,32882.0.html)).

Basically a file that contains an image of a CD. You can either burn it to end up with a CD or use a program like Daemon-Tools to make your computer treat the file like a real CD.
EDIT : How the f**k did I manage to double post and yet still quote two different people.
-
Ok, thanks. But what does it stand for? --Dictionary.com, by the way. ;)
-
IIRC it comes from the International Standards Organisation who are responsible for the standard. Whether or not they are connected (or the same as) the International Organization for Standardization is something I don't know :)
-
Ok, this is off-topic, but I might as well ask here. What is IIRC?
-
If I Remember Correctly :D Should have guessed you haven't been around enough yet to recognise the more common ones.
AFAIK = As Far As I Know - Before you run into that one :)
-
Thanks. :) Fortunately, I do know AFAIK. I just confused IIRC (a lot) with Internet Relay Chat.
Anyway, I don't support illegal activities. Nevertheless, I'm sure Volition would've made the game freeware or something, if they could. Besides, there is already a version of Freespace 2 on HOTU and here (the FTP servers, I think). I know that those versions are 'light' ones but we're obviously not feeling too guilty about it at all. ;) I voted yes.
-
If I do it heres how it would work, I would have a single computer with just linux coyote and the ISO's installed. You could download one at a time. You would set up a time to download... I don't have the cash to do it any other way, is it still worth it?

Legally, you can't download either one unless it's FS2 and "a friend" is "making a copy for you", presumably by sending it directly to you through an instant messenger or a massive email account or something.
However, the publisher that would object to these downloads no longer exists in any meaningful form and I wouldn't be surprised if :v: likes the downloads being out there as free advertising towards the long shot chance that they can convince The Lawyer Formerly Known as Interplay's to unload the rights.

Considering you can download the code for free and have most of the game anyway, it's a moot point. The only thing we could be "warezing" is the content.

The icculus Linux port of Freespace is able to make a pretty damn good approximation of the FS1 code.
...not that has any bearing on whether or not you can distribute the VPs that actually make the game.

Just to elabroate slightly: It's short for ISO9660 which is the particular standard number for CD data storage.

So? You really think that would be a defence that would save you in court (not that this would ever go to court!). If you put up FS2 ISOs you're warezing 1.8GB of content and about 10 Meg of exe.
If you put up FS1 you're putting up 1.2GB of warez content.
So if you're just going on size FS2 downloads are actually more illegal :D
You're wrong. Deal with it and let JoeLo put up whichever game he feels like putting up cause legally there is no difference.

Good point actually. :v: said that they couldn't release the FS1 code only because they no longer had it because they destroyed it making it into FS2.
Whether you believe that excuse or not it does mean that as far as we know the FS1 code is every bit as released as the code for FS2.
-
And who would want the sourcecode for FS1 when you can get it for FS2, which has everything FS1 has and more? ;)
-
Scratch the server idea, I am now a seeder for the FSbattlepack torrent and Freespace 2 torrent. Both ISO's
-
Excellent.
Now tell us where to get the torrents from :D
-
try here, (http://www.torrent-core.org) (server had a power outage, so it's not back up atm), here, (http://www.2torrents.com) here, (www.isohunt.com) (damn good site)
btw, you can download the fs2 iso's here (http://www.freespacezone.com) ;) so there wasn't really any need for making torrents. ;)
-
Have you actually tried those torrent Cobra? Anyone can just search on ISO hunt.
-
yes. yes i have.
-
Fair enough. I'll add them to the FAQ then.
-
There is one on mininova.org, Freespace 1 battle pack, and Freespace 2. I am a seeder on those downloads.
